Great addition to PDX - Edit
Even if the food wasn't great (it is), it's one of those places that's worth visiting just to try something new. Deserves 5 stars

Tasty West African food - Edit
This place is pretty expensive for what you get, but it's worth the hype. They used to run a small operation out of Northeast that seemed to cater more to African expats, but now they are in a trendier area so they do have to charge more...and it's totally worth it. Lots of really great dishes, especially if you are fond of mushrooms.
Read moreThe sauces are fantastic, too, and you can buy them to take home and cook with yourself.
Pros: Amazing food, Lots of vegan options
Cons: Expensive

Tasty and surprisingly classy - Edit
I didn’t have high expectations of this place upon seeing its outside; definitely not much to look at IMO. Once I opened the door though…. Wow! I spent a week in Portland visiting a different restaurant each day and this one is easily the best decorated. I guess the owner put most of the renovation $ into the interior vs the exterior.
Read moreThe food is pretty good although a bit pricey again IMO from being familiar with some of the ingredients. Also the carrot dish is one of the things I ordered and the carrots were more rare than I prefer. Flavor was great though as was all of the other items I ordered.

Impeccable cuisine!! - Edit
We had the Coconut Jolof and the Egusi Stew and both were fabulous. We got the jolof with a locally made millet tempeh that played off of the flavors of the sauce, plantains, sweet potatoes, and rice so well. For the egusi we had the marinated mushrooms and they were the perfect umami and texture for that dish. 10/10 will be back!

5 stars for West African cuisine! - Edit
Our table ordered the Gofu with tofu, Corn Fufu, Plaintains and 2 Jolof Meals. In all my travels including Africa, I'd never eaten West African foods. I loved the savoury, rich tomato sauce in my Gofu. The nutmeg was a standout undercurrent of flavour and I've already replicated it in my kitchen. My Mom and sister had the Jolof meals which they enjoyed, but said for a return visit they'd go with the Gofu. I'll return for the Okra Stew. The Joloff rice was a little too salty for my taste, but the Corn Fufu (first time for me!) was delicious. And, especially with the tomato sauce. The portions a sizeable, the staff very friendly and the atmosphere inviting, although maybe a little loud with live music!

5 stars!!!! - Edit
Akadi has so many incredible vegan options that it is hard to order. I chose a side of plantains, peanut stew with fufu, puff puffs (vegan donuts!), and ginger lemonade. The plantains were the star, but everything was excellent. There was also more than enough food for two people. Definitely make reservations if you plan on going on a weekend!

Amazing African cuisine - Edit
This is, no joke, probably the best meal we’ve ever had in Portland. I’d highly recommend the peanut stew (add tofu) and the assorted mushrooms, but also, no reason to believe anything is worse! Check the vegan section on the back of the menu, they’ve got basically everything in a vegan version. Do be prepared to wait a bit.

Yummy! - Edit
I had a spicy okra and spinach stew with fufu—so good! Let the server know you’re vegan so they can verify with the chef that all the items labeled vegan on the menu are in fact available as vegan that day.

West African! - Edit
We had an excellent lunch at Akadi, sharing four entrees between four adults. Most of the excellent African cuisine in Portland is from the Horn, so it was great to have something from the west. We fondly remember Baobab (Senegal) from years ago but Akadi (Cote D'Ivoire) is way better for vegans. The mafe and the yassa were delicious, especially with fufu. The gofu (tofu in a spicy red sauce) was my favorite. And the pepper soup cut through the cold winter day. We didn't leave a scrap of food behind. Looking forward to going back and trying the okra/spinach and the other tofu dish. Excellent and friendly service.
