Great Pizza in Downtown Grand Rapids - Edit
Big O Pizza and Booze is not a newcomer to the GR scene, but it has been making some big changes lately that set it apart from its old self. Case in point, the name change from Big O Cafe to Big O Pizza and Booze, and with that name change is a focus on their star attraction: the pizza.
Read moreBig O requires descending down from the street outside to enter, so it receives cool points for that already. Unfortunately, their very cool mural on the wall has been covered with a slate grey wall which negates some cool points. I am hoping this is the base coat for a future hip mosaic. The brand design has been stylized to feel more youthful, and the menu gets rid of the clutter to focus on the wood fire pizza.
The pizzas are large with thin crust and soft, sourdough edges. It’s a New York style pizza that I haven’t found an exact replica vegan option elsewhere in town. And don’t worry, the vegan toppings are back! They have multiple vegan cheeses, faux meats, and, of course, the cornucopia of veggies to choose from. We went with the BBQ Chicken Pizza - but customized it to be vegan (lite on the vegan cheese). And it had some of the best vegan sausage on a pizza I have ever had.
The server was one of the nicest, most helpful servers a customer could ask for. They was a minor mistake on our pizza and she comped our meal and re-made our pizza. She was seriously awesome. (It was a genuine mistake, please don’t take their niceness as message to game the system here). The food was so fast and delicious.
Another side benefit of the Big O is the incredible, hidden bar Sidebar right next door. It shares the same general entrance, and it is a local hotspot that the real ones know and love. It’s a great spot to sip a craft cocktail after some tasty pizza.
Overall, I am a big fan of Big O. They seem to be in the middle of a shift of identity, but their future looks really bright. I recommend for some vegan NY style pizza downtown.

No Vegan Cheese nor Sausage - Edit
They no longer have vegan cheese nor sausage. It’s been taken off their menu. Our pizza with no cheese just veggies was fine.
