Good coffee, not great for vegans - Edit
Birch has quality coffee and usually has a couple vegan pastries, but out of the NYC coffee options, Birch is mid for vegans. Think, Gregory's, Joe Coffee, and even Irving Farm have better food options, and some of those have eliminated the vegan milk upcharge. It's an option, but you can do better.

Yummy vegan carrot muffins - Edit
Besides the good coffee, there are a few vegan options to snack on. I highly recommend the vegan carrot muffin with carrots, coconut and raisins.

Went there for some hot drinks. We felt welcome the moment we entered. The staff is really friendly and patient. Prices are really okay. Best hot chocolate and Matcha in town.

Great coffee for takeout, but limited vegan options - Edit
This place is a cramped hole-in-the-wall coffee place with no seating. There is a small park on the south side of 9th Ave. and 57th Street where you can bring your coffee. The coffee is great--but there are not a lot of vegan options (other than plant milks for the coffee, for which you must pay extra, and which in any case may be found in most NYC coffee shops). Of their pastries, only two are vegan (one of which is pre-packaged). Other coffee NYC places listed on Happy Cow, such as Gregory's Coffee, Jack's Stir Brew, or nearby Down Under Coffee, offer a much wider selection of vegan pastries.

Pastries and kick-ass coffee - Edit
There were at least two vegan pastries when I went - I got a carrot cake muffin (it was divine). Espresso is high-quality - not bitter nor sour. The “Birch Spiced Latte” is a must. So delicious, not too sweet, topped with spices. Highly highly recommend! Will be coming back.
