Tasty vegan goodies - Edit
Breads on Oak topped my list of “must visit” places as I was planning my trip to New Orleans, a city that doesn’t boast a great number of all-vegan restaurants. They are open limited hours (8am-2pm, and I was able to make it in a little after 1pm, when they still had an ample selection of sweet baked goods, although the racks of fresh bread were fairly empty. The fridge was stocked with two flavors of local kombucha (Big Easy Kombucha); not as wide of a selection as the other location. I appreciated that they had an allergen sheet available, which allowed me to steer clear of items containing coconut oil. (A number of their baked goods are coconut-free, though they do contain vegan butter. No ultra healthy options.) I got the Seed & Spice Oatmeal Raisin Cookie that was delicious and fresh. I also got the peach bourbon tea biscuit, an item I found more puzzling. It was much more chewy and firm than I expected, although to be fair, I’m not entirely certain what a tea biscuit is. I think it is essentially a scone. But the tea biscuit wasn’t crumbly like a typical scone, which you can gently fork apart into pieces. This thing had too much structural integrity for just a fork, and would’ve required a fork and knife if you really wanted to divide it into bite-sized pieces. My first thought was that it was stale, but I had the opportunity to try the tea biscuits at the original location uptown the following day; they were of similar texture. I had a consultation with the server who also tasted one of the free samples, and she assured me that that is how they’re intended to taste. So I truly do not think they were stale. I think they were just a texture I did not expect or desire. Would make a hearty snack for the right person, but I’d rather save that brick of calories for something else.
Read moreThere were many other delicious-looking and -sounding items that I did not have the chance to try, such as the vegetable sprouted tofu quiche and the live food sandwich.
One final shout-out: they had a laminated sheet with a list of other vegan and vegan-friendly spots in New Orleans, which was a huge boon and contained many awesome-sounding spots that had not come up on my prior searches. This was a true kindness for the itinerant vegan in a city whose culinary reputation is very meat- and butter-centric. What a nice gesture in support of vegan-friendly businesses. I discovered Lamara by way of this list, now one of my favorite spots.
Pros: Delicious cookies, Great sandwich menu, Great convenient location
Cons: Tea biscuits didn’t live up to the hype, Overall not as stellar as the original location

Probably one of the best sandwiches I’ve ever eaten and I’m a super fussy person (basically only drink huel for lunch and breakfast as eating a chore).

Not quite as good as the hype, but not bad! - Edit
Walked over here from the Garden District for a late breakfast. The level of “don’t give a [censored]” from the staff was serious 😅
Read moreDespite that, we ordered:
- Peach bourbon scone (4)
- Pumpkin scone (3.5-4—the biscuit is SO GOOD, and the sausage is pretty tasty, but the tofu scramble is lack luster)
- Egg’o vegan (2.5-3—compared to the pumpkin biscuit the biscuit was kind of flavorless, as was the scramble. The “ham” has some flavor but it was just okay)
- Cheese grits (2—very runny, had some flavor but wouldn’t really recommend)
We’re not sad with the experience but it wasn’t quite as epic as we hoped! If you’re in the neighborhood, it is such a treat to have an all vegan spot, so would recommend coming to try. We didn’t get anything on their bread which, looking at other reviews, seems like a good way to go.

Went here months ago now but trying to catch up on some reviews. Stopped by this bakery every day when I was in New Orleans. Everything I ordered was delicious. And everything I didn’t order looked delicious. Even enjoyed the coffee. Every employee I encountered was a pleasant person. Absolutely recommend. Can’t wait for my next trip to the Crescent City.

The great: King Cake, cheesy grits, the veggie soup and bread, the salad with a delicious creamy miso dressing. All amazing and exceeded expectations.
Read moreThe biscuits for the sandwiches were a little dry and hard, so when you bit in all the fillings smooshed out the sides. For an all vegan bakery I feel like you have to knock biscuits out of the park. Bearcat is doing these better. I offer this as a hopefully helpful tip so Breads on Oak can be the perfect vegan cafe of everyone’s dreams.

Served rotten food - Edit
I hate to leave a bad review because I want all vegan places to thrive, but I hope whoever runs this place sees these reviews and strives to make changes.
Read moreMy husband and I went there for breakfast today, excited because the menu looked great and the reviews looked excellent. We ordered the avocado toast with tofu scramble (2), sausage biscuit, cheesy grits, and two lattes.
Everything came out quickly, which was great. As we started eating, between the greens that topped the avocado toast, I saw that the avocado on my husband’s toast was brown/grey in a bunch of spots. I scooted the greens aside on mine and found that ALL of the avocado on mine was completely rotten. How? How can you knowingly serve that to someone? Did they think they could hide it under the greens? Did they not think we wouldn’t taste the rottenness of the avocado? I took mine up to the counter and showed the employee. I didn’t return the whole meal, all I asked for was fresh avocado. She stared at me blankly and said “okay”. A couple minutes later, she dropped of a quarter of an avocado and said “here’s your avocado”. No apologies. No remorse. Regarding the sausage biscuit: it was dryand overcooked with nothing else in it beside the biscuits and sausage. The grits tastes solely of onions, no other flavor. The cookie was hard as a rock, leaving me to wonder how old it was. The only good items were the coffees. Because it seemed like they couldn’t care less about serving rotten food, I wouldn’t even give them a second chance and go back. Do better! #Veganuary
Cons: Serves rotten food, Staff didn’t care

Amazing, all vegan, with KING CAKE! - Edit
We went here every day on our trip to NOLA. The location is nice, clean, and has wifi, but who cares? We are there for the food! Here are our favorite items, ranked from favorite to least favorite:
Read moreKing cake (10/10)
Bavarian cream and Pecan caramel tied for 1st place
Almond cream 2nd place
Strawberries and cream 3rd place
Breads on Oak served the only vegan king cake we found in NOLA, and it did not disappoint. We purchased multiple slices every day. This sweet, creamy, colorful cake will be appearing in our dreams for years to come and was a standout memory from our trip.
Rum cake (10/10)
Delicious and moist. Enough said.
Big Daddy Burger + Hand baked fries (10/10)
This was the perfect combination. Dip a fry in the aioli, put it on the burger, and enjoy all the flavors of a handmade veggie patty, remoulade, and perfectly seasoned potatoes all coming together. Another one for our dreams...
Mushroom Creole toast (9.9/10)
This was so delicious we ordered one, ate it, and then got up and ordered another one at the same meal!
Pumpkin Cheddar biscuit (9.8/10)
Moist, flavorful biscuit with hearty vegan sausage, tofu, aioli, and other toppings. Each component is delicious on its own, and combined, it is greater than the sum of its parts.
Cheesy grits (9.5/10)
Amazing! We liked this a lot more than we thought we would. Very cheesy.
Biscuit Tower (8.5/10)
Biscuit was not as good as the pumpkin cheddar biscuit, but the addition of cheese was nice.
Live food sandwich (7.5/10)
Much needed after many days of eating fried, rich food. A simple veggie sandwich but the good multigrain bread and yummy aioli make it special.
Chai latte (7/10)
Great chai, not too sweet, just spicy enough.
Peach bourbon scone (6.5/10)
A bit on the dry side, and we added some vegan butter on this to moisten it. Solid peach flavor and would probably go well with a chai.
Quiche (6/10)
We ate this cold at the airport. We were too sad about leaving our trip to give a fair assessment.
Oatmeal raisin cookie (6/10)
Good, tons of seeds, but not all that decadent.
Chocolate chip walnut cookie (6/10)
Very crunchy cookie. I like soft cookies. Otherwise, very good.
Pecan brownie (4.5/10)
We ate this a day after we bought it, so this may not be a fair assessment. While the chocolate bits inside were very good, the brownie itself was dry.

Very nice and cosy place in the heart of New Orleans, not far from Bourbon and Canal street.
