Mediocre Mexican

What you would expect from an American tourist restaurant. So-so food in large quantities. Did appreciate that their was vegan options and that the waitstaff was knowledgeable on vegan substitutes/options.

Delicious margaritas.

The margaritas were delicious but on the light side.

Not vegan friendly

Our server was kind but unfortunately the one thing I thought was safe to eat (beans and rice here are not vegan) was guac— which came with cheese. When I asked if we could have it without cheese the server explained that the cheese is mixed in with the guac so it cant be vegan. This is weird because the menu description said nothing about cheese

Just a heads up to other vegans

It used to be my go-to in Old Town

I used to live in SD for 2,5 years so this review encompasses all my +- 10 visits from 2020 to mid-2022. First of all, the atmosphere here is just amazing, cozy outside seating, if you are lucky- even live music or performances. Servers, mostly of hispanic origin are dressed in traditional clothings and are actually very nice. All that goes well with the vibe of the whole Old Town. Now about the food. I am usually the only vegan in the group so I am quite limited, but there are still some options. My go-to meal was in 90% cases their vegan burrito. The thing is, a lot of servers here are not knowledgeable about how to make this meal vegan. Once it took them literally 3 attempts to veganize my meal. The server was in the end really desperate so I ended up explaining that their rice is cooked in meat broth and should not be served to vegans or vegetarians or that their regular beans are not vegan either and should be swapped for their black beans etc. Because of this, almost every visit became stressful for me, I never knew whether the server was familiar with their menu or not, whether I end up explaining in details how to make their meal vegan or not, whether I end up returning my meals again or not... I just stopped going there unless we were visiting Old Town and eating here was the only option for me. Honestly I would NOT recommend this place to vegans or vegetarians as their staff is not always familiar with their menu and I got served animals products several times here. It is just not worth all that stress.

We went to Casa De Reyes on our last day before we moved out of San Diego and sadly it was the worst visit of all. The server was not nice even though we are always very polite. Not that she was rude but she has not smiled at us not once and had the vibe like she was really annoyed (not just by us, I noticed the same behavior with the table next to ours). The server made our group feel very uncomfortable. She also brought me my tea with MILK already in it which is something that has never happened to me in this restaurant before and I also had a tiny splash of something white on my meal (sour cream?). Sadly, as I already mentioned- the server was unfriendly and quite intimidating, so I didn't complain about anything, just wanted to leave as quickly as possible. One of us didn't even mind she took his plate without asking while he was still working on it! What the...! My intention to leave 3 stars dropped to 2. Disappointing and sad :(

Pros: great atmosphere, fast service, vegan burrito

Cons: not all servers know what they serve, or how to veganize their meals, my last visit here was heartbreaking :(

Go for the giant margarita and nothing else

Gave this place the benefit of the doubt being in such a touristy corner however should have realised it is a tourist trap.
There isn't anything labeled vegan on the menu just a small note that they can alter items to be made vegan and an extra dollar for daiya cheese. Assumed this meant most of the veggie items could be veganised. This was not the case. When we asked our server she said "there isn't much" and pointed to the bean & cheese burrito or gave us enchiladas as options. So we got both. The usual rice side isn't vegan so we had the black beans and corn sides. One plate was plain boiled looking corn and one had burnt corn. The bean and cheese burrito had little cheese in and was just wet black beans with a side of black beans. The enchilada was slightly better but nothing very exciting. The el jefe margarita was by far the best bit. There was also a band playing which was nice but you can also just sit in front of the stage to watch them.

with food like mariachi music to my ears

literally though! there was a band playing while we were eating! and so so good! the food was tasty, and clearly labelled and they even had vegan cheese! but the atmosphere is really what made it! like an old mexican market, with chocolate, icecream, and clothing shops around. plants, lights, music, with tasty dining in the center. so fun!

Amazing burrito!

Really festive restaurant in the middle of beautiful old town! There are veg options in every category of food and they can easily make it vegan. Option to swap daiya. The service is wonderful. The free chips and salsa are addicting. Highly recommend the veggie burrito, it’s smothered in a delicious red sauce. Super cute all-outdoor setting too!

Pros: Quite a few vegan options , Option for daiya cheese, Greats Margs and chips!

Cons: A bit pricier, Tourist area, can be busy

Not Many Vegan Options

A couple of clearly marked vegan options, but the rice isn’t vegan, which is very limiting. Black beans are vegan, guacamole can be made vegan but you have to specify. But not much else unfortunately.

Pros: Clearly marked vegan options

Cons: Only a couple of vegan options, Rice isn’t vegan

Great Atmosphere

Lots of fun, it’s Old Town! Something for everyone but be aware cheese gets slipped in the strangest dishes.

Pros: Easily to veganize menu, Outside dining , Very accommodating

Cons: Got to check every ingredient , Have to ask for fresh veggie additions

Decent Vegan Options

About 40% of the menu can be veganized - pretty decent, but huge portions.
