Very special vegetarian restaurant with vegan options

We nearly didn't go here because we were looking for fully vegan places to eat and Porto has lots of those to choose from.

However we walked past it by chance, it's upstairs in the Bolhao Market and it looked really nice so we decided to go back for my husbands birthday. We are so glad we did, the food here is amazing.

My husband had pumpkin soup to start and it was really delicious. I had mango and avocado tartar which was nice. My husband had black beans, mushrooms, with a crumble and banana which he loved. I had the one large ravioli which was outstandingly delicious. Unfortunately we didn't have any space for desserts

Explosive and unique flavours

80% of the menu is vegan and variety of dishes. Not your standard burger and mezze eatery! We also had starters of pumpkin soup and tempura but they were devoured before the photos hoot!

Cons: Why not make this 100% vegan?!

Nice spot with vegan and vegetarian food

The hummus was really nice, also the baba ganush, the cauliflower. Would be nice to have good salads rather chopped veggies, which don’t add much value in a restaurant.

One of the best veggie options in Porto

I loved this place in Porto, it is located at the 3rd floor of the must known Bolhão market. I went there twice while in Porto. The first time I tried the Green soup, Tofu Welignton, and the banoffee for dessert. Second time I tried the pumpkin soup and the cevadotto, a barley mushroom risotto, didn’t go for dessert a second time since the portions were very well served and I didn’t have space after the great cevadotto, barley is a very clever and more nutritious alternative to rice, I loved it!

Pros: Delicious food, Creative choice of infredients, Nice vibe

Amazing place

Housed within the enormous central market this restaurant is a must. Veggie food cooked over fire. Plenty of vegan options. The staff are knowledgeable and cool. We visited twice as we enjoyed it so much.

Great value great quality restaurant

A great find! Located above a bustling indoor food market it’s a calm sanctuary serving a vegetarian menu with plenty of vegan options. Great salads, small plates and mains and good wine too. Beautiful decor. Friendly staff.

Pros: Staff, Setting, Vegan options

Exelente custo benefício

O restaurante fica localizado dentro do mercado do Bolhão, no segundo andar, próximo a outros restaurantes.

Bad service 😞

We regrettably encountered some challenges during our visit to this establishment. While the ambiance of the venue is delightful and sets a pleasant tone, our experience fell short of expectations. We were eager to enjoy some coffee and cafe treats upon arrival, but unfortunately, our simple order did not proceed smoothly. One coffee arrived cold, another was incomplete, and a beer was overlooked entirely. Additionally, despite ordering cake, we waited for approximately 45 minutes without any sign of its arrival. When we inquired about the delay, we were informed it should only take 15 minutes to prepare a petite gâteau. After an additional 20 minutes with no progress, we brought our concerns to the attention of the waitress, only to be met with indifference as they promptly presented us with the bill. Seriously, he simply turned his back to us and brought us the bill. This lack of responsiveness to our concerns, coupled with being charged for tap water without prior notice, left us disappointed. It is disheartening to witness such mismanagement in an otherwise promising establishment. We are relieved we opted not to dine in and cannot, in good conscience, recommend this establishment. As such, we do not plan to return.

Cons: Bad service, Cold coffee, Missing items

Porto é inacreditável!

I recently had the pleasure of dining at Casa Vegetariana, located upstairs in Porto's bustling market. The setting is both upscale and inviting, offering a delightful experience for any food enthusiast. Casa Vegetariana boasts a menu predominantly filled with vegan options, reflecting its commitment to inclusivity and ethical dining choices.

To kick off my meal, I indulged in the pardon peppers, a dish typically meant for sharing but too tempting to resist having all to myself. The burst of flavors and textures was a perfect introduction to the culinary journey that awaited.

For the main course, I savored the Feijão preto com cogumelos e farofa de banana—a masterpiece of deconstructed delight. This dish featured a harmonious blend of black beans, mushrooms, rice, and banana, offering a symphony of earthy flavors with a subtle hint of sweetness. It truly surpassed my expectations and left me craving more.

To conclude the meal, I enjoyed the Capuccino de frutos vermelhos e coco—a seemingly simple dessert elevated by its delightful infusion of fruits of the forest wine and coconut froth, accented with a touch of aniseed. This unexpected combination provided a captivating sensory experience and undoubtedly stole the spotlight of the evening.

Overall, Casa Vegetariana is a culinary gem in Porto that deserves recognition. If you have the opportunity, I highly recommend indulging in its exceptional offerings.

Amazing creations

Stumbled upon this place on the top floor of the market. I didn’t see it on happy cow as the icon for the mushroom shop was obscuring it! Very upmarket feel in terms of the decor and service. Vegan items clearly marked. We had salads and mains. The brocolli/quinoa/orange/midi. salad was really tasty and good value. The Moroccan style orange salad was little more than an orange, and while delicious, not such good value. The grilled aubergine dish was amazing. Layers of aubergine, potato and cabbagish stuff with a crumble topping. Too rich on its own. The black bean dish - more balanced. No room for pudding. Impeccable service.

Evidentemente, no volveremos.

Amazing veggie find on top floor of famous market

We found this place when bumbling around the market, it's hidden on the top floor with no obvious signage on the lower levels but it's a lovely space with really nice food.

Completely veggie but with lots of vegan options. Some dairy pizzas and cheese options but largely vegan, including the starters, snacks, dips, mains and puddings.

Also a decent range of smoothies and alcohol.

We made a reservation for the evening and am glad we did as it got busy later on. It has a lovely high ceiling and an impressive glass panel decorated by humanised vegetable pictures. Slightly quirky but it really helped keep the children entertained.

Only learning point is that after we had ordered they brought some bread and oil to the table which we thought were complimentary but were then charged for. We could've probably refused to pay for it but decided not to. Worth noting though.

If you are visiting mercado de bolhao, this place is definitely worth checking out.

Pros: Meat free, Lots of vegan options, Impressive backdrop and atmosphere

Cons: Charged for starter we presumed was complimentary
