Great cafe, desserts, and ambience - Edit
I went for my bday, and the vegan cheese board was amazing! The calamari was also very good. (May 2025)
Read moreIncredible vegan carrot cake! So cool that they have lots of vegan cheese, desserts (many that typically have dairy like carrot cake or cannolis), and a full menu.

Pretty expensive - Edit
We were too late to eat dinner because their kitchen had already closed. So we just had a piece of cake and a cappuccino. For two people we paid over $40. Although I have to say it was a pretty good cake.

Went for the potato skins - Edit
⭐️ On vacation and was excited to check out the vegan scene in DC. This place has great reviews so it was at the top of the list. I would not recommend; there are better options, at a better price point, and with better food.
Read moreWe ordered the potato skins, then were told they didn’t have any. Changed our order to the fries and were not offered a refund on the price difference, then they forgot our order all together…it was almost comical. Nothing we had was ‘good’. We finally did get our fries. At least our waitress was nice.

Average but expensive - Edit
The New York style cheesecake here was really nice, but I found my main, the lasagne, was quite lukewarm and fairly average. We felt that the high prices didn't match the casual vibe of the place. The servers were very nice, but ours disappeared for quite a long time - we were told by another server that she was 'in a meeting' so it would have been nice if cover had been arranged in that case. Overall DC Vegan is a nice stop as a fully vegan restaurant, but the food is expensive for what it is.

Cacio e pepe - Edit
I visited over the summer for an event and I have not been able to forget the cacio e pepe from here!! I also had the fried king trumpet calamari and a cannoli, which were also delicious. The cacio e pepe was the best pasta I have ever had, vegan or not! If I ever get the chance to travel here again, I know what I will be getting!

Read moreThe staff are friendly and super helpful. The food was tasty, the restaurant is really cute and I do enjoy eyeing their vegan deli items. 👀
What? I've only heard whispers of Rebel Cheese up until I saw that they had an inventory of them. Naturally, I needed to pick some up!
I went here with a couple of non-vegans, and they claimed that they enjoyed their dishes. I wish I knew what their French toast was made of!
I need another excuse to make my way into DC again. 😅
Pros: Friendly and nice staff, Their vegan deli section , The food

We loved our meal. The vibe in the botanical bar is great. We tried the calamari (a must), the fries Italiano (just okay), the eggplant rollatini (delicious) and the cannoli.

Honest Review - Edit
I ordered the 1 Fries Italiano for $14 and 1 Chick'n Cutlet Club for $16 for total of it I would say it should've been less for what they are offering. The toppings that's on the fries Italiano has a after taste of vinegar and gets overwhelming. I don't recommend the Fries Italiano. The Chick'n Cutlet Club pattie taste like a store-bought product. And the bun on the club sandwich is interesting not sure if it was vegan, but I trust it because they are promoting only vegan. However, the Chick'n club has tomatoes and lettuce and this green dressing that taste like the dressing called Green Goddess dressing and a vegan bacon. I would say if you wanted to try it for yourself go try it. But do your research before you go to any vegan spot.
Read morePros: clean, quiet , sell shirts
Cons: prices are much, limited parking, too much vinegar on the fries Italiano toppings

We're so sorry you didn't enjoy your selections. The Fries Italiano has house made giardiniera and it's been one of our best sellers, but clearly some people don't like the dressing added to the fries. May we suggest the king trumpet calamari if you like mushrooms? That may be more to your liking. We will mention that your chick'n cutlet wasn't good to the kitchen to make sure quality standards are met. Thank you for letting us know about your experience, it will help make us better. Have a lovely weekend.

Disappointing - Edit
We traveled from Richmond to visit some museums for the day and chose DC Vegan for its proximity to them. It was a short walk from the Renwick near a rainbow intersection. It was a 60 degree day so we were excited to see there were tables available outside. When we entered the building it was almost 80 degrees inside. There was a takeout counter. The woman working it was’t particularly friendly. We asked about getting a table outside and were told that we could only sit outside if we got our order “to go”. Which I still find strange. It was Sunday so they were serving “brunch”. We were told we couldn’t order the Oysters Rockefeller because it couldn’t be made “togo”. OK. We ordered the King Mushroom Calamari $16, Califlower Wings $15, 2 Chicken Cutlet Clubs $16 and the Tofu and Wild Mushroom Bowl $18 and got 2 juice drinks out of the cooler. We headed outside to wait for our order. The tables upstairs were full so we went downstairs. All the tables were empty. Just as we went to sit down a man came out of the door and told us they weren’t open yet and couldn’t sit there. I asked if this was DC Vegan and he said yes. I told him we were told we could sit outside and that we had already ordered our food. He asked if all the seats were taken upstairs and we said yes. He begrudgingly acquiesced, which really made us feel unwelcome. We quickly moved when the people upstairs left. Our food was ready shortly there after. I exspected restaurant quality food for the price (concidering the reviews). The Calimari was the best thing we ordered, hands down. The breading was crispy and delicious and the mushrooms gave a perfect Calimari-esk mouth feel. 10 out of 10. I ordered the Wings Buffalo Style. They were sausy with just the right amount of kick. Though the portion size was 6 pieces of Califlower. The clubs were on hamburger buns which was very strange. They were grocery store quality chicken patties. The Bacon was excellent but the sandwiches were so dry we had to use the ranch that came with the wings to make them edible. They were supposed to have a pesto aioli which was nonexistent. The accompanying fries were grocery store fries that weren’t even salted. We’ve had better fastfood fries. For the price, they should have been homemade. The Tofu bowl was also missing the dressing. I have to say the tufu and mushrooms were cooked perfectly and would have been so good if the quinoa hadn’t been so bland. We were disappointed.

Hello! Thank you for this thorough and thoughtful review. Some policies are for staffing issues (like not having staff available to bus outside during some service periods) and we do offer extra sauce as an option. It's always a balance. Some people only want a little and some people want a lot. We are always happy to correct an error when you're there so you can enjoy your meal. Thank you also for posting lovely photos. We will be sure to check on our staff to make sure they are doing their best to be friendly. Much appreciated.

Thank you for reaching out. You and your staff seemed more focused on the YouTuber interview going on than the needs of the people in your restaurant that day. Another interaction with a rude employee would not have improved our experience.

Worth the visit - Edit
We would definitely go back when we visit DC again. The King Trumpet Calamari was incredible with a perfect texture and outstanding marinara sauce. The meatballs in the sub were delicious. The Tofu and Wild Mushroom Bowl was great but not the most memorable. We liked each of our drinks, and they were presented beautifully. The service was kind and attentive, and they generously worked us in early. The only disappointment was the NY cheesecake. We really should have told them how hard, dry, and non-cheesecakey it tasted instead of trying to keep eating it. Between the 3 of us, we couldn’t finish it. It was like a hard, dry pound cake. I think they would have given us something else if we spoke up. The peanut butter cookie was yummy. Overall, we’d eat there again. #Veganuary

Overall food was very good, however service was slow and staff wasn’t the most attentive. I would recommend eating on the upstairs portion of the restaurant (deli part) versus the downstairs, we found the downstairs to be very dark. The dinner menu is pricey but you can order the sandwiches from the deli for half the price. The desserts were very expensive-$12 for one small slice of pie.

I loved it here from the time I walked in! The employees seemed genuinely happy to be there, just a totally positive vibe. The place was clean with nice outdoor seating for a warm day like today. The menu was quite inviting. I enjoyed the chicken Caesar and a side of cauliflower buffalo wings. Well prepared, tasty and well presented.
