Terrible experience twice - Edit
Went here twice and both times they managed to mess up the vegan batter. Burning it, making it hard like a rock, or keeping it too soggy.

Nice location next to the canal - Edit
In all honesty, even though pancakes ('pannenkoeken' as we say, not the American small and thick kind) are a Dutch specialty, I haven't find a really good one, yet. This was no exception: the pancake was rather dry and served almost cold. I get that pancakes get cold quickly, but still...
Read moreThere are not a lot of flavours to choose from as a vegan. Besides the natural one, there were pancakes with apple, banana, pineapple and raisins. (I didn't check the hearty ones, there are probably some vegan choices there as well.)
I had the one with banana, which helped covering the dryness. My partner had the natural one, which was kind of bland.
Also, charging 1,5 euros extra on an already quite expensive pancake for the vegan variant seems stretching it a bit much. My not so filling banana pancake was 11,60 euros.
I would not recommend this place for pancakes when you can't sit on the terrace. In that case: just go for a drink, or for one of the many vegan cake places in the city.
Pros: Nice seating next to the canal, They offer a vegan pancake
Cons: The additional charge felt like a rip off, Natural pancake is somewhat dry, fruit masks that

Delicious traditional Dutch pancake - Edit
I visited them to do a food review collab for my blog.
Read moreI had a vegan & gluten-free pancake with strawberries🍓 and rum raisins. (Can contain traces of gluten: cross-contamination)
The pancake was very good! It had a bite and it was firm like it contained gluten 🌾and light like it contained eggs. I couldn’t taste that it was gluten-free; the many gluten-free pancakes that I’d tried always had some kind of aftertaste or weird texture. This savoury base topped with raisins and strawberries was heavenly. I was received by Rocky ; very friendly and hospitable✨
For now the vegan toppings are only sweet ones (except for the mushrooms). Maybe in the future there’ll also be savoury options; toppings like smoked tofu, plant-based bacon, cheese🧀 and butter would be perfect on these pancakes.
They serve royal portions; I was totally full and satisfied. The Munt Kelder is situated in a lower levelled place at the canal; you could easily walk past it. Coins🪙 used to be stored in this building till 1911. You can watch the busy city life and boats passing by from the terrace. It felt like I was in France with the scenery, plants and sunny weather☀️. And this pancake house has already been here since 1959!
I’m a big fan of traditional Dutch pancakes; I grew up with them, going with my parents to a ‘pannenkoekenhuis’ (literally ‘pancake house’, a restaurant were they serve these Dutch pancakes with all kinds of toppings). You can top them with ‘stroop’ (a traditional dark syrup) and ‘poedersuiker’ (powdered sugar)
I don’t have this often with restaurants, but I’ll definitely visit again for more🥞
You don’t have to miss out on traditional Dutch pancakes when you’re vegan and/or gluten-free😉
Pros: Filling portion, Gluten-free option, Kind staff, location at the canal
Cons: No savoury vegan options (except mushrooms)

Okay, but not great - Edit
The menu had a seperate part with vegetarian pancakes and in small letters it said that vegan was possible with an additional €1,50. There were not a lot of options though and the plantbased milk substitutes were quite expensive.

Pros: Seperate veggie part on the menu, Plantbased milk available, Vegan pancakes possible

The pancake wasn't even good - Edit
My crepe-like pancake wasn't all that good, and because of the thinness, it got cold quickly and wasn't very filling. I was also disappointed that the maple syrup was actually the cheap corn syrup kind--at a pancake place! It's a great location along the water, and the tea was nice, so maybe it's better to visit for a mid-afternoon drink rather than a meal.

Those are just what Dutch pancakes are like. We don’t eat maple syrup with them. We eat stroop with it, a different sugary substance.

Simple pancakes, nothing special - Edit
We shared a vegan pancake with apple and cinnamon. Our expectations were high, so we were a little bit disappointed, it wasn't really special at all. It's nice that they offer vegan options, but I'd rather make it myself at home (greedy Dutchie 🤣). The staff was friendly, but also kind of slow (We had to ask if we could order some food).

Average but not bad! - Edit
It's nice that this place has a vegan option, but it's really limited with the toppings to be honest. I wasn't craving most of what they offered, especially compared to all the options for non vegans. Unless I'm really craving a dutch pancake, I wouldn't really come here very often. Location is central but the ambiance of the restaurant is alright!

Pancakes! - Edit
Typical dutch pancakes at a nice location.
Read moreThey don't have vegan options on the menu but you can ask them to make your pancake with soy milk!
I also recommend having some sweet toppings like apple, pineapple or raisins. Just ask the waiter, they get requests for custom pancakes all the time I believe.
Don't expect anything fancy though. They have salads on the menu and stuff but really, all you want is one pancake covered in syrup and other sweet toppings :)
Pros: Nice staff, Location

Change in the menucard - Edit
I always really enjoy the vegan pancake with apple and raisins at De Oude Muntkelder! The last time I was there, I noticed that they have a new menu card. In this new menu card the vegan pancakes aren't mentioned. You can still order them though: just ask the waiters!

The restaurant looks interesting and it's great that they have a vegan option. Not so great that they charge extra for it. The service was nothing special either.

Don't waste your money - Edit
We love pancakes, so reading there was a place serving vegan ones; we had to try. Unfortunately the pancakes were totally bland. I didn't got what I had ordered but at that point the waitress had already been to the kitchen reluctantly checking if they could make their salad with oil and vinegar; but no; the dressing is not vegan and therefore you can't have the salad. So pancakes only; fine, I thought. But it tasted like the chef cared as much as the waitress: not at all! I didn't even eat half of mine and even my everything-vegan-eating husband didn't care to finish it. Don't waste your money. As a side note: Utrecht was really hard for vegan food, go to Amsterdam instead :-)

tasteless - Edit
I was very pleased to find a pancakerestaurant that serves vegan pancakes. Vegan is explicitly named as option on the menu, they know what it means. I choosed a version with tomatoes, mushrooms and onions and was very disappointed. The pancake was not bad but it was completely tasteless. We suggested to add salt and sundried tomatoes for vegans to it next time.
Read moreI think that if you choose a sweet version the taste will be much better because you can add syrop to it. I strongly advise every vegan to take a sweet pancake!

vegan pancakes - Edit
This restaurant has vegan pancakes available. You need to ask for it, as it's not on their menu. In the center of Utrecht, near the water, this is a very nice place to go.

Pros: customer friendly, multiple vegan options available
