Great service - Edit
I ordered the tasty tofu tacos, a garden salad and a dark roast coffee at the counter. I sat myself w/my coffee and the food was delivered later. Three tasty tacos was more than I could eat. They were nutritious but could use a stronger flavor. The salad w/lime vinaigrette and the coffee were flavorful. Service was very good and restaurant was roomy.

Great location - Edit
The Coralles location is more convenient, but the Rio Grande location is worth the drive.
Read moreThe oatmeal is fantastic with a side of fruit, and they get the breakfast burrito right every time. Order a breakfast burrito with no cheese, no egg, add tofu. It’s amazing.
The coffee is good and they generally have a vegan dinner option, and their vegan chocolate cake is worth the trip.

Delicious vegan breakfast here. - Edit
Delicious huevos rancheros with tofu substitute, red and green sauce, pinto beans, potatoes and corn tortillas. $32.25 for 2 of those. Lovely space. Highly recommend!

Accommodating! - Edit
They didn’t have much options for breakfast, however I was able to veganize their breakfast burrito to sub tofu for eggs and say no cheese. It was really good! They also had vegan oatmeal on the menu. I got vegan cake slice too! It was amazing. Good place to go if you’re going with someone not vegan.

Read moreNot a lot of vegan options. No tofu scramble anymore. We ordered Vegan Street Tacos, but they were not available. The server suggested a Buddha bowl with tofu, which was filling (brown rice, veggies, edamame, and tofu) but lacked real taste (mostly soy sauce). Nice to sit on the patio on a Sunday morning though.
Pros: Nice patio
Cons: Few vegan options, Not very tasty

No Longer Has Vegan Options - Edit
I lived in Albufrom 2002-2013. I frequently visited the Flying Star at several locations throughout the city. I took for granted that it was a coffeehouse with large menu that boasted of vegan items available. Upon returning to the city this week, I relied upon them being a place to visit- specifically for breakfast and seeing them listed here on Happy Cow. However, I can report that unless you are interested in OATMEAL with a nondairy milk, they NO LONGER have vegan options on the menu. They used to offer a vegan migas, scrambled tofu, and occasional vegan burrito. Sadly, that is not the case anymore. I was told they revamped the menu and no longer offer these vegan options. I asked about bakery items, like a piece of cake or cookie, and was told none of the items were vegan. We left, having expressed our disappointment and without ordering anything.

Great place with surprisingly good vegan options - Edit
There are a couple of items on the menu that are marked vegan and others that can be made vegan. I got the Chinese Crunch salad with Gardein chick'n and it was excellent. Very cute patio.

Loved it! - Edit
Fantastic coffee, friendly and accommodating staff. I’m vegan and they actually knew how to alter their menu items for that. You have your dog with you if you eat on their lovely patio. The food was delicious! We had their unchicken burger and a breakfast burrito. Yum!

There’s really no reason Flying Star Cafes couldn’t offer more vegan options. - Edit
They only have Vegan Migas. I got sick of them a long time ago since they are mostly potatoes. Good omelettes and breakfast burritos, which I end up eating even tho I’d rather not. They offer a good chickenless sandwich but the sauce is not vegan, to which I say why bother?

Ok if your desparate. - Edit
This chain has two vegan options on the menu; oatmeal and a Southwest (unpressed) tofu scramble. They are very flexible and will modify egg dishes with tofu, but you end up stripping the dish down so much it's a ungratifying experience.

We’ve been here twice now on our 3 day stay here in Rio Rancho. We loved it so much the first time we didn’t want to go anywhere else for breakfast!

Good Breakfast Option - Edit
The flying star only has 2 marked vegan options for breakfast but they do carry alternative milks and have a vegan cake by the slice, which is probably more options than any other breakfast place in the area. The atmosphere is cozy and comfortable. Overall a good option!

Decent Option- Good Coffee - Edit
All the Flying Star locations are pretty consistent, in my experience. There are a couple of vegan options (not a ton), but the staff is always knowledgeable about what vegan means and what options we have, so that helps a lot. They are VERY open to making swaps and substitutions, that's nice. I'm fond of their giant breakfast burritos, making a few modifications to "veganize" it. They have good coffee too, with almond and soy milk options.
Read moreThey do have a vegan chocolate cake, but I wasn't very impressed. A giant dessert bar, and just ONE vegan option? And the cake was okay, but not any more than okay.
Finally, Flying Star is expensive for what it is, but they try to source locally and I think that has an impact.
Pros: Flexible with dietary preferences, Good coffee
Cons: Expensive, Need to step up their dessert game

Good food and atmosphere! - Edit
This place is great, the menu is changed fairly often so you shouldn't get bored with the menu. I always feel guilty for eating their baked goods but they are wonderful, all the same. There are a few vegan choices with advisement on the menu that more will be offered in the future. Food is fresh and good. A bit pricey, but good food typically is.

I love going to Flying Star and eating a vegetarian breakfast burrito with tofu on the weekends and sitting by the fireplace. Great place to eat at! Try the Mexican Latte with Soy.
