Beautiful vegan pastries

We tried a chocolate chip cookie and a hazelnut croissant, both were delicious. The vegan options are clearly labeled, there are many of them, and prices are reasonable for such beautiful pastries. I believe the croissant we had was €3.80.

No longer vegan, but why?

So disappointed they are no longer vegan, so I'm updating my review.

I had good visits in the past and wanted to come back for our anniversary. Why would they make this change? It was always packed, seems so random and shows they never cared :(

Great pastries and bread

All of their pastries were vegan and 4 out of the 10 dishes on their menu are vegan. I ordered stew, a pistachio croissant and some tea. It was all really good. The bread I got with the stew was amazing, bathrooms are quite nice looking and sitting by the window in winter was lovely as the heater was on full blast. I paid 5€ for some basic chamomile tea though.

Giving 4 instead of 5 stars because according to previous reviews, this cafe used to be fully vegan but isnt anymore. And due to the prices.

Wide choice and nice atmosphere

An all vegan bakery that offers a variety of sweet and savoury bakery items. I tried the pistachio croissant , which was flaky and rich along with an iced coffee.
It’s quite spacious, modern and clean.

Edit, Nov 2024
Eat-in order process: Pick a table, scan the QR code, order online and pick up your order when the buzzer on the table goes.

Baked goods gem

the baked goods were delicious. I also had the mushroom toast and it was pretty good, the mushrooms were dehydrated cooked ones which isn’t my personal fave but the nut butter and lettuce did it nicely

Leider nicht mehr rein vegan

In der Nähe ist aber das Café Neundrei, das von vegetarisch auf komplett vegan umgestellt hat. Das ist auch super 💚🌱

nein danke

update 10/24: no longer vegan, massive disappointment. can’t believe this.

the food is wonderful!! the cardamom croissant is a dream come true as well as the filled one (a richer, somewhat 'nutella' like filling) and the savoury "flatbread" (which isn't a flatbread but a slice of toast, flat bread I suppose) is nothing short of perfect. excellent bread, mushrooms, pesto, homemade 'ricotta',...
yet the service is awful.
the staff is quite rude and condescending, the self service is a chaotic mess. I've come back a few times and I'd love to love this place because the food and concept are wonderful but even for Berlin standards this place really needs to work on its FOH.

Alright

The vegan avocado toast and the lox were quite good but rather expensive for what they were. I also tried the savoury croissant and didn’t like it at all. The oyster mushrooms were very chewy and didn’t have much taste.

The interior is nice, but it’s not very comfortable to stay there for longer than necessary as it’s often packed with people and it can get quite loud.

It’s a shame Frea Bakery felt the need to add animal products to their menu. What’s worse is that they offer more non-vegan items than vegan items. Some of the non-vegan foods could easily be made vegan, such as the pancakes, but they choose not to do that.

Pros: Avocado toast and lox toast, Wasp-friendly policy

Cons: No longer vegan, Quality isn’t very consistent

Not vegan anymore 💔

Seeing a place like this going backwards is heartbreaking. A place that became popular selling themselves as vegan and now giving up on it on convenience.

What a terrible and cruel decision.
I'll never visit it anymore.

I'm also annoyed by the fact HappyCow forces a minimum of 2 stars on restaurants that not fully vegan

Must-Go when in Berlin

I think I had one of the best Cappuccinos there. The atmosphere is lovely, even for solo-visitors. The food is filling and delicious

Edit: Not fully vegan anymore!! Has lots of vegetarian options now.

Great pastries, not so much sandwiches

I was excited about going here because it was supposed to be one of the best vegan places in Berlin. So I took my non vegan-friends here for brunch, setting high expectations. Unfortunately, it turns out they're not vegan anymore and have added eggs and dairy to their menu. Fortunately, the pastries are still vegan and amazing! But I have to admit being very disappointed with their lunch menu. About 2/3 of their menu is now vegetarian, in most cases, including eggs and cheese. Only a few options for vegans are left. Even the pancakes are not vegan anymore 😭
I took the tomato-lax sandwich, and it was delightful. But because of the lack of vegan options, all my friends opted for the egg sandwiches, because they were not impressed with the few options.

Pros: Amazing pastries

Cons: Little vegan lunch options

Exceptional vegan brunch!!

The vegan salmon focaccia was absolutely amazing and so realistic! A delicious brunch and plenty of unique, exciting vegan choices. The pastries are also fantastic, and the coffee very good too. 10/10!!!!

Pros: Great food, Options are different and interesting, Pastries

Cons: No longer fully vegan

Horrible backward development

Unfortunately I can no longer support them after this backwards development. Now they have more vegetarian than vegan items on the menu and less and less follow a zero waste approach. I have not checked the bakery items though, but honestly just go to Sanctuary for the sweets and skip this place. I really hope they will feel the consequences of their decisions. :(

Great breakfast/lunch spot and bakery. The lunch bread stacks are quite pricey, but the taste combination is really yummy. I also took some goodies home and they were sooo delicious, even after a while in my bag. The chocolate croissant is flaky and greasy and chocolatey and yummy!! (Still best to eat fresh) I will keep coming back for more!!

The pastries are nice!

The pastries are vegan and delicious. It’s also nice to sit there. But they changed from being vegan to vegetarian, which seems completely stupid and not a very forward way of changing. The staff is mostly nice, but sometimes quite rude.

Former vegan bakery added dairy and eggs to their menu. 😢

Used to be one of Berlin's best vegan places (if not the best). However, in the summer of 2024, Frea Bakery added eggs and dairy to their menu. Frea Bakery's kitchen is so small that it is practically impossible to avoid cross-contamination. Therefore this place is sadly no longer suitable for vegans.

Updated from previous review on 2024-07-29

Cons: Former vegan bakery not vegan anymore, Now more non-vegan than vegan items on the menu, Cross-contamination in small kitchen

would've been 5 stars

if they haven't had added non-vegan items to their menu and hence broke all our vegan hearts (and, even worse, all the animal's), it would've been a 5 star venue for me.

i think vegan bakeries are still way too rare and i was so excited to visit this (now ex- but back then still a)vegan bakery.
well, i tried the filled croissant and it was very good and also available for a good price. for me, it was still special because they have not-so-common products. however, i heard other people saying they didn't only add non-vegan items to their offer but also replaced vegan ones which is even worse. i am very disappointed of this development

also, the frea bakery is not wheelchair accessible and you have to order inside so it's impossible as a wheelchair user to visit this place alone.

Pros: some nice vegan options

Cons: added non-vegan items, replaced vegan offers with non-vegan, ⛔️♿ because of stairs, card payment only

No longer vegan

This used to be an amazing vegan cafe and bakery. I visited regularly and loved their food. I was horribly disappointed to learn they are no longer vegan and will not return.

So sad

Me and my (non vegan) sister visited Berlin from May 20th to May 26th. I had made an itinerary for all the vegan places I wanted to visit and Frea (both the bakery and the restaurant) were on the top of that list.
I had already written part of my review when I learned about Frea the Bakery stepping back in time and adding animal suffering to their menu.
At first I contemplated not adding a review at all, but I did enjoy what they served when I was there, so did my sister, and it just really saddens me that a bakery that is this popular resorts to animal suffering to "widen their appeal".
So I've decided to write a new review.

This written review is only valid for their fully vegan time/menu pre June 2024. The amount of stars given is for their decision to add animal suffering to their menu.

----------------------------------
The first day my sister and I visited I got the Spandauer and a cardamom croissant. My sister als got a cardamom croissant and a savory croissant. We both highly enjoyed our breakfast. The cardamom croissants were by far the favorites, though the Spandauer was absolutely amazing as well. The savory croissant was good but not super special.
Drinks (1 decaf cappuccino and 1 chai latte) were good but expensive. Adding €0.80 for decaf coffee is excessive imo.
We decided to return for breakfast the following day too since we enjoyed their pastries so much!
Second day I had the pistachio croissant which was good, but I felt like the filling was too focused in the middle which threw the whole croissant off balance. It was plain croissant on both ends and then only the middle part had pistachio filling which was way to much for such a small space which caused it to be seeping, dripping, out of the croissant all over the very small plate and my face. If possible I'd like to see the filling more evenly spread throughout the whole croissant.
All in all we highly enjoyed their menu and delicious foods. So much so that we bought a couple extra of our favorites to take home with us.
----------------------------------

What added to the experience is that I managed to get my sister who is neither vegan nor vegetarian to come with me to all-vegan (mostly zero waste or sustainable) eateries every day and she loved every bit of it. I didn't mind paying the high prices Frea the Bakery was asking because they were 100% Vegan and zero waste and sustainable. Had Frea been vegetarian when we visited we would have skipped and chosen another, vegan, bakery.

Pros: When they were vegan their pastries were great, When they were vegan they held up to their standar, At least they tried? I guess?

Cons: They've lost their integrity, They added animal suffering to their menu, Not sustainable or zero waste anymore. Expensive

NO LONGER VEGAN

Update: they have started selling things with eggs and dairy!!! Don't come here! What a shame and what a disgusting thing to do to the animals who are tortured for eggs and dairy, and to their customers!

Tried the avocado toast, a spandauer and a pistachio cake. Everything was amazing, I inhaled the food
