Maybe better next time - Edit
Gys probably could have give us a very good lunch experience, but this time it just wasn't there.
Read moreTo start with, we weren't greeted upon entering the restaurant. It wasn't busy at all and there was staff at the counter, not reacting to our arrival. It sounds like not a big deal, but this is one of the biggest mistakes in hospitality you can make.
Lunch was great. The Shakshuka with tofu and toasted bread was absolutely tasty. The tomatoes were caramelised perfectly. I tried the Harira soup from my friend, which was also very rich, but a bit on the salty side and loaded with unions.
The menu was confusing. They stated "all our dishes are 100% plantbased" but you could add eggs to some lunch options and they had the cow milk option for coffee as well. This made us wonder if the feta or parmiggiano were vegan or not. The feta with the Shakshuka is vegan, but not mentioned. One menu entry mentioned vegan parmiggiano and another didn't, so one is and one isn't? I thought the menu was 100% plantbased? They could have better advertised everything was vegetarian while clearly marking vegan options.
"We don't do free refills" the waiter said when I asked for just some extra hot water for my expensive tea. I mean, I get it, but come on? He refilled it for free eventually because I think he realised also it's not a big deal.
All but all, this time it just wasn't quite there. We had to leave at 17oo also for a private staff party. Would love to come back to try the dinner menu though, it does look promising!

Some dishes are very nice, some really need improvement - Edit
Very nice that this place is completely vegan and all food is organic, the service was of sufficient quality, however, not exceptional. There was very different quality to various dishes. Some were delicious and some had some issues. The tofu dish with ramen elements was way too salty, the fried mushroom tasted like they hadn’t been freshly fried and the kurkuma cauliflower was overcooked and too oily. I make the last two dishes at home and with better quality. That must improve. Some dishes were very nice, the beet/red onion/blackberries (I think this was with sumak) dish was very tasty, and also the labneh/jerusalem artichoke dish was awesome. So definitely something to enjoy. There’s a nice range of interesting non-alcoholic drinks which were very tasty.

Food okay but long waiting time - Edit
The food was okay, a bit pricey and the portions didn't have a proper size to share between two people. Besides that we waited nearly an hour for fries to arrive, to then discover they were cold as well, and an hour and a half for 3 dishes to arrive, which in my opinion is unecessarily long considering the restaurant only had a small group of other people besides us. Too bad this is the experience we've had, hope they improve it in the future.

Highly recommended - Edit
Gys is the kind of place you are grateful exists if you are vegan and gluten free. I loved it in summer 2024 and it was just as good when I returned in December 2025. Everything tasted fresh, the portions are generous, and the atmosphere is easy. The owner even packed my leftovers and wrapped them so nothing would spill. Really thoughtful.

I celebrated my birthday at Gys last week and it was absolutely lovely. The staff was friendly and attentive and the interior is beautiful. I’m not that much of a shared dining person, but my friends are so this was perfect. I do wish they’d still have regular dinner dishes on the menu, though. It’s all very much catered to the shared dining experience. I also find it unfortunate that they aren’t fully vegan yet. The eggs on their lunch menu and the option of cows milk for drinks are disappointing and unnecessary. I had a cherry chamomile iced tea, which was a flavour bomb. For mains we went for the BBQ Leek, Spanish Orzo, Indian Pakora and the Loaded Fries. The pakora was very dry, but all the other dishes were wonderful. The artichoke hearts in the orzo were especially savoury which I loved. The Tropical Pineapple was my dessert of choice—very tasty and colourful! Overall, some dishes didn’t blow me away but most were very solid. Will be visiting again😄

I really wanted to like Gys because it’s been offering vegan food for so many years. But I can’t say I wasn’t disappointed. The prices for a main (more than €20) are simply too high, the food is decent but not outstanding and worst of all it wasn’t even filling. There ‘Korean foods’ are anything but Korean and they have no idea what they’re even doing by using certain terms for food that isn’t even replicating anything (cauliflower bulgogi??). I also had a ‘Sicilian bbq’-dish, which didn’t have much to do with bbq. Overall I think it’s very overpriced, even the drinks were quite expensive, there are only 3 options for under €4. Oh plus they aren’t t even vegan, you can add eggs or cows milk….

I used to love this place, but the food has become less tasty in the last ~3 years, e.g. their kapsalon and shakshuka.
Read moreOn the other hand, their pastries are usually tasty: I really enjoyed their cheesecakes, pumpkin cake and lemon/poppyseed cake.
What I find less nice about this location is that, on weekdays, there seem to be Gys employees using it as an office for brainstorming and meetings (even during lunchtime). The staff also seems less attentive than at the Voorstraat location.

They offer breakfast, lunch and dinner - the only non-vegan option are eggs in the Shakshuka 🍳 (just get rid of that, how hard can it be?).

This used to be one of our favorite restaurants. Everything is organic, almost everything is vegan, and everything was delicious.
Read moreBut recently they changed the menu. Now there are no regular starters and main courses on the menu, but only small dishes that you have to share. We don't like that.
Also, not all dishes are complete meals (a complete meal contains vegetables, a source of carbohydrates and a source of proteins).
I hope the normal concept with regular dishes will return.
Last point: I don't understand why this restaurant doesn't just go 100% vegan.

Another really good meal in Utrecht. We went for focaccia, pakoras, loaded Fries, crispy oyster mushrooms and gochuang cauliflower then pistachio fudge for dessert. Everything was really tasty especially the oyster mushrooms and cauliflower.

Read moreThe reason I’m giving four stars instead of five is because, although the restaurant claims to be 100% plantbased and organic, they still offer the option to add eggs to some dishes if a guest asks for it. Personally, I find that inconsistent. If you stand for 100% vegan, stick with it. And if someone really wants eggs, maybe this isn’t the right place for them.
Still, a great experience overall!

Wij komen altijd graag bij Gys Amsterdamsestraatweg. Meestal voor lunch, dit keer voor een high tea. Het was geen enkel probleem voor ze om rekening te houden met allergieën en het eten was heerlijk. Iedereen, ook de niet vegans, zaten te smullen van het eten en de verse sapjes en verse losse thee. De medewerkers zijn ook altijd heel vriendelijk en behulpzaam.

Went to this location for the first time after having been at the other Gys before and I very much liked this location! The set-up is a bit bigger than the other one, and it’s also on walking distance from Utrecht central station.
Read moreWe ordered the kapsalon and the mushroom steak. I enjoyed the mushroom steak more, a little spicy and really meat-like. The kapsalon was basically a healthy version of the ordinary kapsalon.
Also highly recommended: the fries (very crispy and tasty) and their “borrelplank” which was quite big and delicious.
So a good place to go for both drinks & snacks as well as dinner (and lunch, but I haven’t tried that at this location yet).
Update 20 nov ‘24: new menu, still good. See added photos! Highly recommend the froyo brownie dessert.

Wij hadden de courgetti en saté. De courgetti was fantastisch, vooral de balletjes met “Parmezaanse kaas” die er op lagen. De saté viel wat tegen, die was wat basic en te weinig satesaus. Maar ondanks dat alsnog erg lekker!

We had a nice afternoon at the sunny terrace. I liked the ice coffee and the carrot cake with chai. The cake was moist and had a lot of flavour. The lavender cake was okay, but would not come back for that one. The cakes are better than a while ago.
