Memorable Vegan Fine Dining!

I visited The Hotel Pormeition's The Dining Room and dined from their Vegan Dinner Menu. The restaurant holds 2 AA Rosettes, and they have 2 dinner menus that alternate daily. During my visit, you could not park by the hotel itself, but the village car park is free, along with free admission to the village up to 30 minutes prior to your booking time. I noted I was vegan when booking, and the staff had prepared vegan entrées and had a vegan menu ready on arrival. The short quiet walk through Portmeirion was a treat, and the views overlooking the Dwyryd Estuary were fabulous. The hotel itself is beautiful and is adorned with artwork and tile murals, and the art deco style restaurant was a pleasure to sit in. The service matched the upscale setting, and the experience was elevated by having Welsh speaking staff and a harpist playing in the bar.

The vegan menu itself had some great options, and I was torn between a few dishes. The canapés of Olives and Beetroot Falafel were enjoyable, and the warm Sourdough and Foccacia breads served with Olive Oil and Balsamic which followed went down a treat. There was also vegan butter available. As my starter, I had the Braised Sand Carrot, Smoked Puy Lentils, Black Garlic, Hazelnuts. When it arrived, I was sceptical as the dish looked borderline comical as it appeared to be a piece of carrot floating in a bowl of foam. However, there was more to it than met the eye, and it truly blew me away. Next came my main the Teriyaki Glazed Maitake Mushroom, Tempura Lion's Main Mushroom, Broccoli, Pearl Barley. This was a treat to look at, and it tasted phenomenal. The broccoli was perfectly charred, and the dish was rich and filling. I was utterly impressed. The final course was the dessert, and I had the Dark Chocolate and Olive Oil Tart, Honeycomb Ice Cream, Raspberry. This was the weakest course of the three. It did not have the wow factor the earlier dishes had in taste, nor the wow factor the desserts from the standard dinner menu had in presentation. Although it was nice, I have had better vegan chocolate tarts and ice cream in less expensive restaurants. I had two non-alcoholic cocktails, the Botanic Garden, which didn't taste of much, and The Mermaid, which was fabulous.

Overall, I had a fantastic evening, and I'd certainly go here again, as they really take care of vegans. I highly recommend it to vegans after a special treat. The nearby Castell Deudraeth also offers vegan options, so I am keen to give them a try next!

Pros: Exceptional Food, Outstanding Location, Great Service, Seperate Vegan Menu, Caters Well for Vegans

Cons: Dessert Could Be Improved, Drinks Menu Not Labelled

Cinio yn y castell

We were lucky enough to spend a night in one of the Portmeirion cottages and chose to have dinner at the castle. There was a separate vegan menu with varied options. Although the dishes looked small, the three courses were lovely and left us satisfied.
Worth it if you are splashing out.

Pros: Delicious food, beautifully presented , Polite staff

Cons: Quite expensive

Expensive but absolutely worth it

We stayed in the castle and ate there one night and one night at the hotel. So amazing to have a choice for all 3 courses and all totally delicious, couldn't fault the 6 dishes I tried. The castle and hotel have different menus so even more choice! The vegan alaska, pea veloute, and gnocchi were my favourites. Shame they have l'occitane bathroom products - this ex ethical company started animal testing so they could sell into China. No sign of vegan breakfast options mentioned by others, they did have dairy free spread and oat milk, but I ended up asking for beans/toms and mushrooms from full English. An excellent stay for a special treat.

Pros: Absolutely delicious 3 course vegan menu, Choice of dishes, Vegan wines labelled

Cons: No specific vegan breakfast options, Not cruelty free bathroom products

Gourmet Vegan

We staying in the amazing hotel and enjoyed amazing vegan food. They have three menus. Standard. Veggie and Vegan. Plant based was no trouble for them. With a choice of 3 starters, mains and deserts. Plus three cooked breakfast options. All sampled and top notch. Highlight for me was home made bread and vegan croissants ( must order the day before ).

Pros: Dedicated Vegan menus, Fantastic friendly staff, Welsh language coaching is thrown in. Diolch !

Cons: None

Good vegan menus

Both the hotel and castell provide vegan menus. I had breakfast at the hotel and dinner at the castle. If you book and give your name, they greet you with the vegan menu so no messing about. The wines are expensive but served beautifully- red wine warmed perfectly and there's loads of choice.
Vegan breakfast menu at the hotel is great. The raspberry croissants are cooked to order unlike the butter ones that sit around for a while. Full breakfasts available. You can eat as much as you like- cereals, toast, croissants, full cooked meal.
This is expensive but great for a treat especially if you want to stay there and access the village at night. I would recommend staying in a village room as they're right in the middle of everything.

Pros: Fully vegan menu, No smell of meat in the restaurant , Well labelled wine list

Cons: Expensive
