This was some of the best ramen I’ve had in Japan and in my life. Also a great option if you’re eating with non-vegans, my boyfriend rated this the best ramen he’s eaten ever.

I think this place is divisive. I've heard that this is the best ramen spot in Kyoto and I've heard it's absolutely terrible. I hope I can be objective here and take from it what you will.
Read moreYou'll notice something as soon as you walk into this restaurant. It's the clientele. This is probably the most well trafficked restaurant for tourists that I've seen thus far. I don't think I saw a single native Japanese customer on my two visits. Is that necessarily a bad thing? Well, not really. Turns out Engine Ramen is one of the only ramen spots open past 6pm in ALL of Kyoto. That means this place is going to show up as the only place to eat ANY vegan ramen if you're out late. I know. I was in that position at 8pm. Angry, hungry and tired of waiting for Vegan Izakaya Nijiya. I search for food nearby and this was it.
The food itself is great. I really, really enjoyed the Vegan BEANing ramen. I'd put it in the top 3 vegan ramen bowls I've ever had. The broth is savory, it's complex and it packs a big punch in flavor without it being too salty. It's honestly the best part. I absolutely devoured that entire bowl and came back for seconds. I also had the vegan soup dumplings which were, I believe, deep fried dumplings in the same soup broth as the ramen. As a lover of the broth, that part was great. The dumplings themselves were ok. Getting extra noodles would have been the better choice.
Sidenote: I didn't realize it until I reviewed something but no restaurant that serves meat will ever have 5 stars on Happycow, no matter how good the vegan selection is. Might inform your decision on whether to go here. The BEANing ramen is a 5 star for flavor, but that will never be reflected here.

Read moreI took the Kyoto Beaning Vegan Ramen and it was fantastic! When you take a spoon of the broth at first together with the seeds it's a real taste explosion. Try the different seeds one after another - really fantastic!
Clear recommendation: Go visit Kyoto Engine Ramen if you are nearby! Incredible nice english speaking staff, modern ambience, super tasty ramen. Definitely worth a little waiting time if it should be a little bit crowded.
Update october 2024: Revisited today - still the best ramen I have had in Kyoto, and maybe in all of Japan. Sadly the ramen did not came with an apron this time so that your clothes don’t get messed up.

We shared the 2 different types of vegan ramen, plus the soup dumplings. All the food was delicious! We had to wait about half an hour arriving at 7pm, but the process was easy. They give you a number, and say approximately how long it will take.

Really cool kinda hidden spot with two vegan options and you can pay to add on extras, and things for meat eaters too which is rare and great to have both. Fun little kitchen atmosphere, chefs were lovely and food came fast and delicious! I just got the Zesty Ramen but there were soup dumplings and rice sides available.

I have eaten several vegan ramen dishes in Japan, some of them really delicious, but this one is by far the best I’ve had. I tried the Zasty Ramen, asking for it to be as mild as possible, and it was perfect. I have never tasted such a creamy and flavorful broth. Even for my boyfriend, it's the best ramen he’s tried so far (he has tasted all three versions with meat). The soup was also excellent. Unfortunately, we couldn’t try the rice because it was sold out. It costs more than other ramen, but it's totally worth it. We enjoyed it so much that we returned the following evening.
