Really good!

Very good ramen with vegan and vegetarian options, spicy or non spicy. There was a bit of a wait but we got a spot for two people relatively fast (10/15 minutes). Worth the wait!

Best ramen I’ve ever had!!!

Wow, the vegan ramen dish deserves a 5.
Creamy but not too much, so flavorful, hearty noodles. Amazing!
We got both vegan dishes, miso rice, and beer 😍

Genuinely so impressed

Wow wow wow. So amazingly flavourful. We had the zesty ramen, soup dumplings, and miso rice, and just… wow. We also ordered gluten free noodles and they were divine.

We came back! Had the other vegan ramen option — also delicious! And highly recommend for people who don’t like spicy (zesty option is spicy)

Good ramen, fun place but loud/hectic

The whole kitchen is open and you can watch the staff cooking. It is a bit loud and stressful / hectic but the food is great. Staff is friendly.

Nice but too hot for me personally

Nice place to eat at. Gluten free noodles are available and my friends quite liked it. For me personally the zesty ramen was too hot, as i just dont enjoy hot food that much. Worth a try. Otherwise a very nice spot.

Well deserved high rating for Kyoto Engine Ramen

We tried their Zesty vegan ramen and were definitely not disappointed. There is waiting system here and one has to make a reservation by arriving at the location and taking their token. Lovely broth, and noodles made the experience worth the wait.

Staff is lovely

I absolutely loved this place. I ended up going back three times. Honestly, the ramen here was better than a lot of vegan spots I tried during my time in Japan. There was always a queue, but it moved pretty quickly. Only once did I have to wait about an hour, and even then I could step away and walk around for a bit, which made it totally manageable.

Delicious Ramen

I've eaten lots of ramen in my life, and this was the best I've ever had. The staff was nice and the menu is in English (with clearly marked vegan items), which probably means it's a tourist-geared place, but the food was delicious, so who cares?

Gave us chicken and said it was vegan

The ramen was delicious and the vegan dumplings (once we got the right ones) were also tasty. However they handed us a bowl and said it was vegan dumplings when it had a massive hunk of chicken in it. My partner tried some (I thought it was mushroom) and then checked and found out it was chicken. They were not at all apologetic which was super disappointing. The food was tasty but I don’t trust them on the vegan thing.

A little.... Meh

Not gonna lie, the vegan ramen (we had both options) were not bad. But I really can't agree with the other commentors. There's so many more tasty places all over japan. The soup was tasty, but not breathtaking. For what it is, it's just overpriced and feels like a tourist trap. The exclusively English menu should have given us a hint xD
The noodle just is not good. Period.
Staff is friendly though, and drinks ok. It's fine for a quick emergency meal when you have a few extra yen to spare

The best in Japan

I’d give 5 stars if HappyCow would let me. I visited several vegan places in Tokyo, Osaka and Kyoto but came back to Engine THREE times! The vegan ramen options are insanely good. My sister is non vegan and said it was her favorite too. The staff is incredibly friendly and the prices are on point.
I’ll miss them when I head back to the US.

Go late to avoid queues

Thought I would try my luck at 9:30pm ish because I know this is a popular spot. There were no queues at all, was seated right away, ramen came out within 5 minutes.

The ramen was good, but definitely not the best which I was expecting from other reviews. I have had a lot better, even within Kyoto. It is nice that they have vegan options, but the price is a little much for something that doesn't have protein, not even tofu. The noodle portion and vegetables were not enough to be full on an empty stomach (and I am not a big person) - I even added an egg. But I just drank the entire broth which filled me up eventually. The wood ear mushrooms were a highlight though!

Pros: Lots of thick broth, Usb charging and wifi, Fast service when not busy

Cons: No protein in ramen, Small portion of ingredients
