East Bay food co-op. Very small store in a often ignored part of town. Offers bulk and fresh produce, and the deli also serves hot food for lunch with vegetarian and vegan options. Grocery is part of “The Market Match Program* offering 50% off all California Grown fruits and vegetables to customers paying with SNAP/EBT. Open Mon-Sat 9:00am-6:00pm.

Grocery Co-Op Across BART - Edit
Loved recently learning about this establishment- I have yet to go in! From the exterior they looked friendly and offer fresh produce in an area that used to be heavily industrial with limited options in healthier foods. I would totally support if I’m back in the area!

Well stocked with local vegan products - Edit
I wish I lived close to here, because if I did, I would shop here every time I need groceries. I came in looking for Oakland made kubé ice cream, and they were super well stocked with every flavor. Then, to my surprise, I saw various other small local vegan brands stocked, like granola and muffins from Way To Life Foods, and cookies from Sugar Plum Vegan. There were even other vegan products that I'd never seen before, and pre-made vegan meals.

Cons: So expensive, but that's expected

Go to Mandela! - Edit
Mandela is amazing! They stock items very intentionally, with a lot of vegan options, and label what products are made locally and what products are black-owned. The staff are great and it is cooperatively run. Check out their social media for some sweet virtual cooking shows and homemade recipes (most are vegan).

Great little health food store - Edit
Mandela is great for running out of items and needing a place to quickly get something, like a health food bodega. But the prices are sky high so you are really paying for convenience. I love the people that work there, just not a place one can do their normal grocery shopping in.

Great mission - Edit
I’m so glad I made it out here: it’s possibly more convenient for me to take the BART from SF out to West Oakland and get my food coop grocery shopping done here than trying to catch a bus down to Rainbow Grocery. (Counterintuitive, I know.)
Read moreI was pleasantly surprised at the variety of fresh, local produce and vegan products available despite its modest size. Adrianna, the manager, was super friendly and helpful. Ask her what her favorite items are! Mandela Food Coop definitely feels like an oasis in West Oakland. The prices are quite reasonable compared to Whole Paycheck and, to some extent, Rainbow Grocery and many SF farmers markets.
Note: although they do accept credit cards, you can show your support by using cash so that they don’t lose any margins to payment processing fees.
Pros: support local minority farmers, variety and quality of produce, array of vegan products
Cons: watch out for meat and animal products

Lovely store in convenient location - Edit
Mandela Food Cooperative is right across the street from West Oakland BART and carries a variety of fresh produce and mostly vegan dry goods. I recently bought everything I needed to make a fancy polenta and veggies meal there - onions, mushrooms, greens, can of tomato sauce. The staff are friendly and you can tell they really care about their customers.

kind hearted place - Edit
This is a great little coop. They do carry meat/dairy/eggs, but serve mainly vegan options. They have inexpensive options and high class options, so it's great no matter your price range. Next to a 99 cent grocery store. They have a produce bargain bin which is where I buy all my produce. 1$ for four organic onions?!?! Unreal.

A nice little grocery store - Edit
I like this place. If you're looking for a locally-made to-go lunch or some Califia Farms almond milk by the West Oakland BART, this is the only place to be. Otherwise, you'll have to settle for getting something from the 99 Cent store or the Subway. This is way better. I love the vibe here. There aren't very many employees so you might as well get to know them. I'm often there right when they open and people are sleepy and struggling to make coffee and I find it to be very casual and charming.

Best Little Organic Market EVER! - Edit
I love this store. It's perfect and well priced and has great, helpful, always friendly staff. Go here 1st to get every thing you need, then go to BB or WF as Mandela sells out of things fast and they may not have every thing on your list on the day that you in there. They use local farmers and unlike BB and WF they use farmers of color.
