Great atmosphere, delicious food

Mother of coffee has a very warm and welcoming atmosphere and cosy decor. Since I wrote my first review, Mother of Coffee has moved into central Wellington and I've become a regular. Their vegan sambussa (fermented pancake with chickpeas and lentils) is a great lunch option and the vegan platter is really nice to share for dinner. The location is lovely with outdoor seating in the left bank laneway. I'd give it 5 stars if the app would let me.

Love this place!

I want to give 5 stars but HappyCow won't let me.. this is a great, vegan friendly and authentic place. It also allows byo wine. This place has added something very special to the vegan food scene.

Pros: Mostly vegan menu (fyi - also great for coeliacs), Incredibly tasty, authenic food, Like nothing else in Wellington

Cons: If you go in the colder months book inside ahead

Great experience!

Love the fermented teff bread - great texture and flavours with a bit of a tang. Yummy lentil filling too. Super friendly, welcoming staff top it off. Felt like I had entered a different country 🥰🌟Their Ethiopian coffee was great also!

Spices on point!

I had the combo, came with 5 different portions of their popular mains. All so good. Great spice, didn't need any salt or pepper. And I was so full after. Looking forward to going back again!

Pros: Well priced, Filling , Super tasty

Great experience!

highly recommend the sambussa, which is a mix of veges and scoops of many different dishes wrapped in injera bread. too spicy for my taste but delicious nonetheless! really good value for money and definitely the best choice if you are not too hungry. very unique experience, fast and very friendly service, and the sambussa is the most value for money especially compared to the combo options. #Veganuary

Pros: whole vegan menu, cozy, warm, relaxed environment, Good value for money- sambussa, not so much combos

Cons: spicy, even though I requested mild

Yummy food

There aren’t many places doing Ethiopian food in NZ so it’s always great to find one because it’s delicious. We had the vegan combo for two - it came with multiple dishes (including several different lentil-based ones, a kale-based one, and a beetroot-based one) and yummy injera bread - and lots of everything. The food was all delicious and the staff welcoming and friendly.

Pros: Delicious food, Options hard to find elsewhere in NZ, Nice staff

Vegan sambussa

I highly recommend the vegan sambussa. It costs only $7 and is like an Ethiopian samosa, cut in half with amazing spiced lentils poured over the top

Pros: Vegan menu, Good music , Good prices

Interestingly out of my comfort zone.

For our family of three this was our first experience with Ethiopian food. My husband and son chose the Shiro Wot, which they found a bit too monotonous for a complete meal. I had the Alicha Tikil Gomen, which was nice. The traditional bread was interesting and the the traditional tea delicious!

The restaurant had a nice African feel due to the warm decorations and the staff was very friendly.

Delicious food!

We were greeted with warm smiles and our lovely waitress was full of recommendations. We got a traditional tea (vegan), traditional coffee (vegan) and two vegan dishes to share. The bread to dip is vegan and you can request your level of spicy from the chef.

Pros: Lots of vegan options , A lot of food for your money , Cozy environment

Flavourful Food

Generous servings of delicious vegan and vegetarian curries with rice and tasty injera bread (kind if like a slightly sour, spongy crepe) to soak it all up. Flavours are full-bodied and there's a punchy hot sauce that I believe they make themselves. They also have vegetarian pies available. You can find them also at the vegan night market. Décor isn't amazing (although I haven't been upstairs) as they share the space with a tech store but to me the food is waaay more important.

Pros: Flavourful food, Friendly staff

Cons: Décor could be better
