Amazing vegan options:)

Lovely place, amazing selection of vegan menu options, handmade pastries and desserts, smoothies and drinks. We had the mixed platter for two which featured falafel, deep fried non-dairy cheese, vegetable crepes, seitan cutlets, seitan kievs (stuffed with non-dairy cheese) and a selection of sides including rice and peas, fried onions and crushed potatoes. They do not serve alcohol but we found this a refreshing change and this did not detract from the atmosphere of the place. I wish we had somewhere like this back home in the UK. Thank you:)

Pros: Vegan pastries and desserts, Handmade beverages

Cons: Do not serve alcohol

5 Star Pizzas

I’ve never seen a vegan place with as extensive a menu as here – there is a colossal range of tofu, seitan, pizzas, pastas and salads. A lot of the dishes seem quite heavily reliant on the mock meats, and when myself and my girlfriend ordered a sharing platter we found the amount of seitan a little excessive.

However, the real star here is the pizzas – they are outstanding and made us come back 3 days in a row while we were in Budapest. The bases were baked to perfection and the cheese melted really well on top – we both said to each other that we couldn’t believe they were vegan. As with everything else on the menu there is a wide choice of different toppings.

There are also a large variety of cakes and ice creams which are all worth trying as well. Service was generally a little slow but otherwise if you are in Budapest this place is a must.

Loved it!

Your seitan is very good, maybe the best I've ever had. Scones i also loved. I wanted to have traditional Hungarian food as a vegan version and luckily you had many options.

Pros: super affordable!

Brilliant

Lovely place - we went here on our first night in Budapest and went back for the other two. Good, varied menu with lots of choice. Big range of Pizzas, some Hungarian style dishes, pastas and vegan 'grills'. My personal favourite was probably the stuffed cabbage, also had a pizza and a seitan kiev all of which I enjoyed. The desserts were good too with two or three on the menu plus a selection of different cakes (the 'honey' in a couple of the cakes was actually agave syrup). Favourite dessert was the Somlo Sponge Cake. There were raw and gluten free options also available and juices etc. to drink, I stuck to the rose lemonade which was sold by volume. Friendly staff and a pleasant environment; all in all very enjoyable and great value.

Pros: Awesome menu, great food, good value,, friendly and pleasant ambience

Mixed feelings

Food is not so great as others reviewed.
We had a Mediterranean salad which was made mostly of iceberg lettuce.
A pasta which was cold, under coocked and the tomato sauce was very salty.
An Hungarian cuisine dish which was nice.
Also an Almond cake which was good.

Pros: Many vegan options.

Cons: Expensive for food level.

Many Options for Delicious Meals and Baked Goods

I spent a week earlier this month working in Budapest and after trying this restaurant my second evening there, I returned for dinner every night and lunch once, too. I was able to sample something different at each meal and it was all well done. The women beyond the counter were very friendly and the table service was more typical of formal Hungarian waitstaff, but still very accommodating. I highly recommend the potato rolls which they had available two of the days I was there. I bought extra to take home to share with my husband they were so good! Daily specials, Hungarian dishes, and pizza were all equally well done. I cannot recommend this place too highly.

Best vegan restaurant in Budapest

Simply the best "vegan" restaurant I've been in Budapest. They have really good "veganised" hungarian food, it was a delight. The staff was nice, they have a lot of choices. Desserts are pure heaven, the vegan cheeses are great.
It's a little bit expensive compared to other Budapest restaurants but it's worth it. So good!
I haven't seen it myself cause the menu's pretty big but apparently they use honey. I hope it will change soon...

Pros: Best vegan food in Budapest, Friendly staff, Lots of choices

Cons: Honey IS NOT VEGAN, It means it's NOT a vegan restaurant, Please make your restaurant VEGAN.

Dear VincentGaliano,
thank you for your comment.
We would like to respond in connection the honey, the Napfényes Étterem does NOT uses honey anymore. So we DO NOT offer honey to the drinks and NONE of the cakes contains honey. So the whole Napfényes Restaurant is HONEY FREE!
The misunderstanding was the fact that earlier we offered honey as well to the tea - so honey was available up on request in our restaurant. But not anymore.
Nowdays to tea we offer agave syrup or brown cane sugar.
So Napfényes Restaurant 100% VEGAN.
So come and visit us again and tell everyone about this great news!
We are looking forward to welcome all of you!

Yummyy

We had dinner there. Everything was incredibly delicious. Seriously amazing. Even our omnivore friends were amazed. So for the food I will be going back for sure. The place looks classy but the service was disappointing.
On the way out we stopped at the confectionery shop where the lady tending the counter more than made up for the previous experience. She gave us samples of the vegan ice creams which were superb so we bought some and we took home some cakes too. They were also fantastic.
I think it is safe to say that everything at Napfenyes is delicious.

Pros: The food is to die for, Reasonable prices, Great confectionery section

Cons: The table service wasn't great

AMAZING

We had only three days in Budapest so we wanted to try more vegan restaurants, however, we had to come back to Napfenyes, because it was just amazing, they have even vegan ice-cream (you have to try hazelnut-carob at least)! The food is delicious, the prices are veeeery good, the staff is very friendly and even the location is great! Oh I miss this place already :D

Pros: delicious, inexpensive, ice-cream!

Leckeres Essen, gestresste Bedienung

Schade!

Pros: Essen lecker, tolle Lage, hausgemachte Limonade

Cons: Gestresstes Personal

So good I visited two days in a row!

This restaurant gave me several gifts:
1. I met an awesome friend who, like me, ate here two days in a row.
2. Gave me the experience of enjoying Hungarian food even with my dietary restrictions.
3. The food was cheap. It was worth twice its price in the states. For Budapest, it was moderate.
4. This place is centrally located and was so easy to find.

The first night I visited here, I tried the stuffed cabbage, which was divine. The second night, I tried a Hungarian pizza. I could eat pizza every day of my life and the pizza here did not disappoint.

If you are downtown and hungry, this is the perfect place to visit. The service was lovely, they spoke English very well. They also have baked goods, which my travel partner tried and loved.

Pros: Everything.

Better not going there

Usually I am a great fan of vegan food, I am a 100% vegan, I love being vegan.

This restaurant was one of the rare bad experiences.

I ordered a vegetable-soup and fried asian rice noodles.

The portion sizes were very, very small, I must have ordered the meals 3x times to get fully rich.

Also I was surprised, how much time it took the staff to deliver my meals.

The prices are too high for these small portions.

The waiters were always changing and not very kind.

!!!! I didn't feel welcome being there and this is the worst thing that can happen to you when coming to a restaurant. !!!!

It was also very, very difficult at least to find the restaurant. It is very hidden from greening trees with small entries.

The only positive ting I can say, is:
The restaurant itself is clean and well-kept and I like the violet-yellow design.

[edit by staff - please see ToS]

I would not go there again.

Pros: Clean and well-kept, Beautiful Desing

Cons: Small Portions for these prices, Waiters won't pay attention to you, Hard to find

Dear LotusFlower,

Thank you for your review. These reviews that help us to become better in our service every day.
From the other reviews you will see that we are Europe-wide famous for our huge portions, so I am not sure what you mention in your review. Do come back and I would like to see you eat 3 dishes from our menu. :)))
We even get reviews to decrease the portions so they have room left for the delicious dessert we have.
And if you want to rave Kozmosz Vegan Restaurant, actually it is truely a lovely place, serving dishes we do not have on our menu, so I am pretty sure we can live happily, peacefully next to each other in the vegan and vegetarian community of Budapest. Cheers,

Poor service

We tried to eat here, and did manage to get served soup, which was delicious but ended up leaving hungry as our main courses never arrived. Service was chaotic, with wait staff wandering around with food not knowing which tables to take it to. We finally paid for our soup and left.

Pros: Soup was good

Cons: Service was extremely slow and chaotic

Best meal in Budapest!

While it was a little confusing finding the place - as on happy cow it has been listed that it has moved but the updated address isn't put on this listing - only on the newly added other listing - however the address there is wrong too! - I recommend you look up this restaurant on Facebook and look at the address listed there - as we found that to be the only correct address.

My partner and I went here today for lunch and upon entering we were greeted warmly by lovely staff and taken to our seats.

The menu's are in English and all the staff spoke fluent English also. We ordered drinks of ginger lemonade and rose lemonade - both were tasty :) We ordered entree of the goulash soup and we LOVED it!! Really delicious!

For main I ordered the savoury creamy pancake with fried potatoes and vegan mayo and my boyfriend ordered the fusilli Bolognese pasta - both were really delicious!! I must say though mine was a huge serving and a VERY filling meal.. I rarely don't finish a meal but I did leave a little of the potato on my plate but really the meal could have been two - and I should have just got half of it to takeaway but it was just so delicious I kept eating until I felt ill! - It just tasted so good! Definitely not a very healthy meal and it was a bit 'heavy' - could have used a nice green salad to lighten it up a bit, but it was seriously delicious!

We also ordered a fresh apple juice and herbal tea - all good! We also ordered a piece of the Russian Cream Cake to take away - such beautiful looking desserts it was so hard to choose! It was really yummy and tasted like a traditional dessert - I was very impressed!

Everything was vegan except honey they give you with your tea and also one of the cakes in the cabinet contained honey too.

I would definitely go back here and highly recommend it - it was definitely the best meal we had in Budapest!!

Pros: Food!!! :), Staff were friendly , Desserts

Cons: Address Incorrect

Yammy - loving it

The restaurant has a big choice of different menus (Pizza, pasta, hungarian food...), they also have a variety of vegan sweets and pastry. The food is very fresh and in a good quality. The staff is very friendly and helpful and the location of the restaurant is very central. We really recommend this restaurant! (We went back 3 times :-))

Pros: big choice of different menus, fresh and good quality, located very central

Cakes were very good.

Pros: very well located, pet friendly, good prices

Comfort food

I was very impressed with the food here. My boyfriend and I shared goulash soup and it was tasty. For main I had the daily special (veg stew with millet) and my boyfriend had ratatouille. The servings were huge. The only thing I'd say about this place is don't go expecting a healthy meal. Everything here was very starchy and had a lot of mock meat and fewer vegetables. For example the ratatouille was mostly fries with seitan with a light tomato flavour. No eggplant or capsicum. Nonetheless an interesting take and very delicious, if not entirely what we were expecting. The veg stew was delicious, but also not a lot of fresh veg (mostly potato and carrot with a lot of millet and a soy yoghurt topping). We had a chocolate cake for dessert and it was great! There was a huge selection of cakes and slices and they all looked amazing. The pizzas looked really good too.

Pros: Huge portions, Tasty, Lots of choice

Cons: Hard to find healthy options

Went back twice and almost a third time!

I want to thank Happy Cow for saving me on my eastern/central europe trip. The recommendations and reviews were great. Who knew there were so many restaurants to choose from?!

Liked enough we went twice (almost 3)! I took a meat-eater with me who was happy to go back a second time. The portions were filling (western portions) at great prices. There is an English menu if needed. Napfenyes has a very diverse menu with lots of options for the fussy. Who knew that vegetarian goulash could be so yummy!?! The pizzas were great. We tried 2-3 different kinds from the margherita to the coal pizza. Be aware that they do use quite a bit of meat substitutes, so if that is not your thing, ask to alter the dish.

The interior is warm and comfortable especially coming out of the cold. The wait staff was great. The salad bar was very sparse and not even worth a look. I am sure the salads off the menu are probably better.

The location is in a cellar a bit off the beaten path. It is a nice walk from the bus stop. We loved being able to walk the back streets and see the neighborhoods. There are bakeries and stores in the vicinity to stop in.

As long as they do not change the quality of the food, we will definitely be back. The restaurant was definitely a highlight for us and will be our go to in Budapest.

Pros: english menu, large selection, great value

Cons: skip the pitiful salad bar

Amazing!

I want to go back to Budapest just for this place. We had the huge vegan sharing platter for about £5 each and my omnivore boyfriend said he'd prefer it to any meat! The battered vegan cheese was actually delicious and I say that as a cheese loving veggie. Great service, taste and variety. We had the only table spare so booking ahead may be advised.
I found a lot of places on here for Budapest were small food bars and not restaurants like this place.

Pros: 100% vegan- had to ask as taste so good!, Comfortable booths, Knowledgable staff

Cons: Might need to book ahead.

wonderful!

I was a little worried about travelling to Hungary and not having any places to eat. While I did enjoy the bread, apples, tomatoes and grapefruit juice, this place is a vegan oasis in a meaty desert. I was only able to visit once and was rushed having to pick someone up at the train station. My friend (fearful of vegan food) ordered the French onion soup and Greek salad. Her soup, while not what I imagined was delicious and I wished I had ordered it. Her salad looked basic but fresh. We both had the rose lemonade. Amazing! Stronger rose scent than I thought but was really nice (even better with a little vodka or champagne? :) ) since I had been eating bread for severs days I ordered the sunrise platter. Massive amount of food, embarrassing when you don't speak Hungarian and you try to explain that after a couple days you get really hungry for food you aren't afraid to eat... The staff was very nice. The fried cheese was great and the potatoes. I wish I could have visited and tried so many other things. Nice atmosphere, friendly people, bless them for having good vegan food in Budapest!!

Authentic Hungarian Flavours

I was sceptical that I would be able to find good vegan food in Hungary but I ate there twice in one week and took home some trad. hungarian pastries veganafied for my family to try too. Very large portions, this isnt usual in Hungary to have so much food on one plate! but so so delicious and authentic flavours I hadnt had since I was a kid. This would sway any meat eater youre travelling with and a true representation of Hungarian cuisine. Defos go for the share platter and the rose lemonade.

Pros: authentic flavours, portions, quality

Cons: small space, can get very busy, can seem a bit understaffed, they only have cookbooks in Hungarian

Awesome

I had really good time as a vegan in Budapest. Napfenyes was my first choice to visit, and after a great night eating a lot and still spending less money than I expected comparing to other inexpensive restaurants, I was sure that I would go back. So, I went there three times within five days.
Portions are generous, food is magnificent and you must try raw cakes -- they are stunning.

Their pizzas were the best I ever tasted. It's a tough parameter to reach, so I feel pity for other pizzas I used to eat in my country -- I'll compare them using Napfenyes standard :)

Pros: Tasty, Big portions, Cheap

Cons: They could have wine, Honey instead of agave
