Vegan Japanese 😍 - Edit
It was so nice to have a fully vegan Japanese restaurant given that many things traditionally contain fish/shellfish. The staff here was very friendly and the food was amazing. I had the NA Origami sake, katsu curry, yuzu/pumpkin miso onigiri, and black sesame panna cotta to go (must try!)

True Comfort Food - Edit
Such a perfect place for a rainy Portland day. The homemade udon noodles are perfection and the broth is so flavorful.

Great flavorful comfort food - Edit
Obon is really great as a semi-fancy spot to eat. There are different sized tables that can accommodate for two, larger groups by the windows, and even larger gatherings in the way-back past the bathrooms. You can get either table service or pay via QR code. Went multiple times in a short timespan in groups recently and the service and quality of food has been consistently fantastic each time. Very flavorful options!
Read moreThere was a seasonal lobster mushroom noodle dish going on this October and that was really really good. The mushrooms were flavorful and not overwhelming and the sauce was very pleasant on the chewy noodles.
I've also gotten the Udon Salad and the portion size on that one was really good. Loaded with veggies, the Udon is full of great textures and flavors. It's something I know I'll get again and definitely recommend.
The Hand-battered kaarage is also really savory and yummy, surprisingly filling with a really good sauce!
My friend got a black sesame panna cotta dessert that she shared with us, and it was also so creamy and delectable.
Every time I eat here I also get an onigiri, and the yuzu with pumpkin miso one is super good, I've gotten it every time I've visited. They also have dog sushi for your pup friends!

Homemade Udon Noodles! - Edit
We loved this place! Japanese comfort food with some unique creations. Upon the recommendation of the server, I ordered the Tempura Udon soup, which was flavorful and the homemade noodles were perfectly done. Not a huge portion for $16, but a reasonable price given the quality. My wife ordered the cold udon salad, which had a lovely miso dressing and tempura fritters. We’ll be coming back. Friendly kid environment and a good kids menu. Friendly and attentive staff. Very well done.

Legit Japanese Comfort Food 🍙 - Edit
I love Obon Shokudo. Tired of sushi, ramen, and yakisoba? Obon has you fam for that authentic, Japanese low-key comfort foods you won't find outside of Japan.
Read moreOnigiri? ✅ Teppanyaki? ✅ Agemono? ✅ I will admit, the one thing I'd love to see is takoyaki, but otherwise, I love the menu. Not feeling frisky and fabulous? Try a more traditional bento or curry meal, but stepping outside your comfort zone won't kill you. Wash it all down with a wide range of 21+ sips or indulge in a sugary drink, it will remind you of buying your favorite soda out of a 100 Yen vending machine while you stroll the streets of Osaka, or which ever Japanese city you vibe with.
I ordered the udon salad. After hyping this place up, I got something pretty norm-core. I had an evening of music ahead of me and didn't want to feel bursting full. It was fabulous. After finishing my last bite, I wanted more. Next time.
Order by QR code. Service was pretty quick. Pricing is fair and serving sizes match pricing.

So Salty Unpleasant - Edit
I’m likely in the minority with this opinion but I did not enjoy this restaurant. I tried the combo plate and the tofu katsu. The katsu was decent and everything on the combo plate was pretty good except the ONIGIRI which was AWFUL. My partner also thought the onigiri was awful. It was so salty and sour I couldn’t swallow it.
Read moreWe saw people around us eating it and enjoying it though. We were so confused: Are we eating the same onigiri as them?
Just a weird and unpleasant experience

Cons: Salty

Landed here after the airport. Chill. Delicious and friendly. The potato salad and the giant tots represent the finest potato artistry of Portland, perhaps all Oregon.

Meh - Edit
I went with my fam and we ordered the combo, katsu curry, and udon salad. Our favorite thing was the crispy fried root vegetable fritter, not sure what it was called and the tater tots were nice. The katsu was nicely crisped but lacking salt or a sauce drizzle, and the curry was quite bland and we asked for salt. The salad was fine, but pretty standard. The onigari with pumpkin seed miso and yuzu was weird tasting and the ginger pistachio was also strange, we didn’t finish it. Overall it was underwhelming, not sure if it was on off day but it was all lacking flavor or imagination. Still fun to try!

We shared the combo plate and the tempura udon. Both were really good, great presentation, and unique flavours (buddhas hand onigiri!?) The strawberry red bean daifuku was insanely good!

Fantastic All Around - Edit
This place was delicious. I came back multiple times throughout my time in Portland. I was happy to find something close to the convention center that had such good food. It was much better than the vegan options offered for my conference, haha. That staff was really helpful and made some great recommendations. Make sure to try the desserts too!

Okonomiki in America! - Edit
My husband was thrilled they serve okonomiki. He grew up eating these in Japan, but they're never on menus in America. It was authentic and delicious. I had the combo which allowed me to sample seven different menu items, all delicious. We will definitely return next time we're in Portland. (Maybe I'll remember to take photos then!)

Awesome Vegan Japanese food - Edit
Second time eating in the restaurant and I've also had their food when they catered / vended at Pickathon. Outstanding! I had The Combo, which consists of two onigiri, one giant tot, one curried korokke and kakiage w/ sesame + a small salad. Ordered some chili crisp and it came with a few sauces for the various items. A wonderful melange of flavors and textures. Delicious. Enjoyed combining the flavors as well. Also tried a few bites of pickled veggie side dish and that was also sublime. Great spot!

Loved this place, the vibe, the staff. Came back to try more. They use many fun misos (pistachio, pumpkin… I suspect they make miso in-house). Favorites were the desserts, especially the cheesecake and the panna cota.

Can’t wait to try more - Edit
We’ve heard good things about this place but needed to get back to Seattle, so we picked up some onigiri to have on the train. It was an excellent choice! The pickled plum was our favorite and I highly recommend. If you like spice, the Thai chili has the best kick. The Aleppo pepper one has a little spice and a whole lot of flavor. Our least favorites that we tried were the garlic and carrot-ginger. They weren’t bad but they just don’t stand out as much as the others. We can’t wait to come back to Portland and try more of their menu here.
Read moreEdit: We came back (twice) to try more things! The Okayu congee (with tofu misosuke) was handsdown my favorite. My partner loved the tempura udon. The broth is so flavorful! And their chili crisp has much more depth than what you find at the grocery store. The Okonomiyaki seems really popular, and it was fine, but not our favorite. (It reminded me a hashbrown.) Ilove how unique and creative their menu is, and this will definitely be a staple for us on return trips to PDX.
