My favorite outer Sunset market

I love Other Avenues! When I lived close by I would frequent this market often. So many healthy and alternative choices.

LOVE

I love this place! When I lived in the neighborhood I would go out there for the pre-packaged foods and fresh baked goods! Amazing. The veg Caribbean pre-packaged meal is so good but often sold out! The Keri's cookies were yummy too. I can't recommend this place enough.

Pros: Outdoor seating, Friendly, Great food

Cons: They run out of pre-packaged foods

Cute!

Such an adorable health food store close to Ocean Beach! Small and compact= can get cramped when many people are in there. Great range of vegan options and a nice aesthetic overall.

Pros: Lots of vegan options , Close to beach

Cons: Cramped when busy

Other Avenues

I stopped by this store while walking around this area in 2019 and picked up some tasty vegan snacks. I actually wished this place was closer to my former neighborhood so I could have gone more frequently. They had many vegan options to choose from overall and prices were reasonable. I don't have anything negative to say about this place.

Home away from home!

I looooooove this coop. I've been going to it for three years and there's so much I love. I love the friendly faces of the employee-owners. I love how much they care about the store and the products they carry. I love that there are no dead animal parts to avert my eyes from like in a conventional grocery. The store is all vegetarian except for pet food and some supplements (e.g., fish oil). They do sell animal dairy, but I think their non-dairy selection of cheese, butters, ice creams, milks and other non-animal products is impressively large for a small store. They are always making improvements too to how the store is laid out and bringing in new products to try. They always have Miyoko's cheese and other vegan cheese in stock and Beyond Meat as well as pre-made vegan and vegetarian meals.

They have an impressive bulk section too. You can get nuts, dried fruits, cereal, granola, sweets and treats, pretzels, dried beans and grains, flours, chocolate chips, baking ingredients, oils, nut butters, teas and spices in bulk! They've even started caring soaps and lotions in bulk as well.

They are very careful about their sourcing. If a fruit is not in season or there's some sort of labor conflict about the sourcing of the food, they won't buy it and they will make sure to put out a sign explaining why you can't find it.

Just the other day, I was in the household product section and I saw a sign that said that they would absorb the cost of tax on feminine hygiene products because they believe that you shouldn't be taxed for having a womb. Amazing! I cannot think of another store that puts so much care and thought into everything they do.

They also have solar panels on the roof and they are open every day of the year except Martin Luther King day and May 1st (the real labor day). They also allow customers to "round up for justice" which means you can round up your bill to the nearest dollar and donate the change to a carefully selected cause chosen each month. Causes range widely from legal support for those facing deportation to other social, environmental and animal causes.

And, if there's something you'd like them to carry, just ask! They're more than willing to try it out if they can get it and it passes their quality standards and see if it sells. They'll also special order things for you by the case if you like.

You can become a member, but you don't have to be to shop there.

What more can I say? I love this place! Check it out!!!

Pros: Amazing Staff, Thoughtful sourcing, No meat!

Cons: Some items are a bit more expensive

vegetarian store

Everything sold is vegetarian, so you won't have to look for hidden meat ingredients. They offer a variety of health foods and a great selection of refrigerated dinners if you don't have time to cook. The Nourish bread is great! Ask for it. (Vegan and gluten free). Several gluten free options and beauty products. They're selling the Pacific makeup line now. Neat!

one of the best

Other Avenues is an amazing health food store. Cooperatively run, so you can sign up for a shift and get a discount. They have a phenomenal selection of dry goods, spices, produce, books, etc. Truly a gem. I've lived in many places, and this is my hands-down favorite health food store.

Pros: great vibe, excellent selection

Cons: Too far from NYC!
