Known for home-style global vegan cuisine with gluten-free options - Edit
Leaning into fall with @peacefoodnyc’s seasonal menu full of warm and hearty dishes. Nothing screams comfort food than a plate of steak, mashed potatoes, and string beans. I’m a whole foods, plant-based type of vegan so I did not order this special. But a taste of it from my friend’s plate had me shooketh. It had a deep, umami flavor. Clean. And the texture was natural. I want to say it was made out of mushroom. If you do know, please tell me. Else, I might just have to go back and order it for myself to find out. The mash and string beans just took it over the edge, with the potatoes soaking in that porcini mushroom gravy goodness and the sauteed beans adding a textured crunch. Layered in some sweets and closed the meal with a slice of the cashew cream cheesecake and peanut butter cheesecake served with a comforting mug of apple orange cider. Service was warm as always. It was a satisfying way to celebrate World Vegan Day.

UPDATE: STILL HERE AND HANGIN' ON! - Edit
9/22/2024: I AM so happy to report that Peacefood Cafe Downtown is STILL here, and although business has (thankfully) picked up, they're still in arrears, though more hopeful that they'll continue to be here, serving up their fabulous fare!
Read moreThank you to all who heeded my S.O.S. and if you're in the area, PLEASE come and support - you WON'T regret it!
8/11/2024: Quite possibly my last visit here, as Peacefood Cafe Downtown may be forced to shut its doors by the end of the month. If you are anywhere in its vicinity, PLEASE pay them a visit and savor what I deem to be some of the VERY BEST Vegan fare ANYwhere. Furthermore, if you are able to do so, please navigate over to their GFMe Campaign and contribute whatever you are able to, in order to wage an 11th-hour save of the 11th Street location: https://www.gofundme.com/f/help-keep-peacefood-union-square-open
Previous Review 3/24/2024: Having updated my review of Peacefood Uptown in January, after a 7-year hiatus, I was surprised when I realized I've never posted a review of Peacefood Downtown, which is the location I prefer and have returned to more frequently since first eating here in 2016. Like the uptown location, they have scaled down their menu, but thankfully not so extensively as uptown. There are still plenty of offerings to satisfy healthy appetites and that includes even the most health-conscious among us (including plenty of raw options, no sugar, etc.). Not only that, but everything is reasonably priced. With a genuinely upbeat vibe, in a light, airy, and spacious environment, Peacefood Cafe Downtown is, without a doubt, on my most favored list of NYC Vegan establishments.

Truly top tier - Edit
This place is awesome! Luckily I came here with 4 members of my family so I got to taste a lot and everything was really good. I got the mac n cheese and their soup of the day-lentil and kale. Perfect soup, extremely homey with a squeeze of fresh lemon 💛 my mom got the quiche which was amazing, excellent flavours, we also got a pizza, and a sprout sandwich as well as the beet salad. I loved the beet salad from the beets, to the nuts to the dressing. There are also beautiful desserts here as well as juices, just an awesome selection. I think my favourite thing about this place (besides the fact that its vegan quality) is that the meals are well balanced with fresh and substantial options, balancing healthy and indulgent in a really nice and appealing way

Thank you for coming in to support Peacefood Cafe Downtown during what I fear may be its final few days (so much of NYC is going to crap!) If you are also able, please navigate to their fundraising page in the hopes of saving this quality establishment, and/or please share it widely and thank you!:

Phenomenal - Edit
The chickpea fries and seitan sandwich were excellent! This was healthy but didn’t feel like a health food restaurant. It’s almost like healthy food can be tasty! I find vegan food is often deep fried to oblivion food or health food and this was the perfect in between. Will definitely be visiting again during my visit to NY!

FYI Peacefood Cafe Downtown is in trouble, owing 100k in back-rent (the past 4 years of stupidity proved devastating.) They have a Go-Fund-Me up and running to try and raise the money needed. Please help them if you can, or they'll simply be yet another quality Vegan establishment that bites the dust.

I came here and tried a roasted vegetable sandwich that was on special and wow was it delicious! The dumplings were nothing special to me, but they said they were quite popular. While I enjoy mock meats it's nice to see a place that is a little more old school vegan and plant/veggie forward. Excited to come back!

I think we ordered the wrong meal, as most other reviews rave about the food! Our mac and cheese wasn’t that great though, thought it was a bit dry and just not super impressive. Very close to 4 stars though.

Great food near Union Square! - Edit
I ate here once about 7 years ago and apparently wasn’t very impressed since I haven’t been back until recently, and now I’m kind of mad because I really enjoyed it here this time! They’ve definitely upped their game in my opinion.
Read moreThe menu is pretty small but interesting and they offer a TON of desserts, also smoothies and fresh juices.
I was craving something simple/minimalistic so I ordered the Peacefood bowl and the soup of the day (cauliflower artichoke). Both hit the spot. Nothing was exceedingly salty or oily. I was very satisfied with the portion sizes - the soup and the bowl both were generously sized (I eat a lot and am often upset about small portions everywhere!!).
The restaurant itself is quite spacious and although it was very busy on a Sunday afternoon, it didn’t feel cramped at all and the food came out fairly fast.
Pros: Big portions , Simple yet yummy flavors, not overly salty

I’ve been a Peacefood fan for a long time now. Am usually there a few times a month & have had family birthday dinners there. Will add a photo next time I’m there.
Read moreThey (including the original uptown location) are famous for desserts, a wide menu, amazing daily soups, hot ginger-turmeric latte, & warm, friendly service. My faves: mushroom barley soup, Parmesan rigatoni with pfc cutlet, and a unique & delish strawberry shortcake.
I love other dishes here also, but can’t go on too long! 😉

So good, had to visit again - Edit
Ordered out and had the Tahini Sprouts Sandwich and Pumpkin Quiche. Both were excellent! Full of flavor and nutrients that leave you feeling happy and satisfied! It was so good that we might even order again today then I’ll try to get a picture without devouring it first. Dessert was good but I didn’t care for the coconut flavor that mich. We had the Raw Cheesecake and Strawberry Shortcake - strawberry flavor tasted a little artificial.
