If you were in the green area is normal that they don't serve you because is free, you can just sit there and read the periodic! (it's a tradition but I know that if you are not aware can be a little bit confusing)

Just for a cappuccino - Edit
I went there with a friend just for a cappuccino. Since it's an historical cafe it can be pricey if you ask for table service but we got the cappuccino at the bar and we didn't spend a lot. They told us they finished vegan croissant but they usually have them.
