Cold, partially uncooked, poor service - Edit
Make sure it is properly cooked and the correct temperature. Our rice wasn’t cooked properly. So we had to wait for the new rice to arrive. By the time it did our main dishes were cold. We were treated as inconveniences.

Tasty with Good Service - Edit
My husband and I were passing through Chicago on our way to an Indiana wedding and stopped in at Planta for a delicious meal.
Read moreWe had several shared items, including the portobello tataki, watermelon ahi nigiri, and ended up getting a free order of bang bang broccoli and then the thousand layer potatoes accidentally instead of the chicken slider bao that we'd ordered, but it was really delicious anyway! The watermelon ahi was something I had heard of and hadn't gotten to try before, so that was fun, but it's a very thin slice of the "ahi" and mostly rice. The portobello tataki was wonderful, being both simple and an excellent flavor combination, and the bang bang broccoli was crispy and spicy--I can see why it's a popular item. As a big potato fan, I really loved the thousand layer potatoes, and could probably eat way too many of them.
For our entrees I got the garlic chili tofu and my husband originally got the Dan Dan noodles without realizing that the szechuan kamut listed is the szechuan peppercorns he dislikes (it's apparently very numbing for him, but just tingly for me), and was able to switch to the Thai lettuce wraps after speaking to our server, which was really kind of them, but I am kicking myself for not sampling the Dan Dan noodles myself before he sent them away with the server... The garlic chili tofu was good, although the yuba was on the thicker side more like fu zu than I was expecting and I think I would have expected a bit more seasoning or at least some browning on the tofu. I appreciated the whole shiitake mushroom caps in the dish. Husband liked the lettuce wraps much better, although he did say the Dan Dan noodles had good texture/chew and I think he would have liked it if it hadn't included the szechuan peppercorns.
The location itself is very trendy in decor and the waitstaff is very nice and accommodating. They don't validate parking (we parked in the Greenway garage in the same building), but they did suggest a store nearby that might do validation (we didn't go, though). This seems like a nice date spot!
Pros: Delicious Food, Trendy Upscale Decor
Cons: Expensive

Read moreThe service sucks since the new manager joined the team. And it’s weird how she’s always sitting on her laptop in one of the dining areas instead of observing the restaurant. I’ve also found two hairs in my food the last two times I’ve been here… gross!

Used to be great - Edit
For a long time this was one of, if not my favorite vegan restaurant in Chicago. However, it seems to be going downhill. I’ve had issues with my orders the last few visits and service has gotten much worse. Always having to ask for water refills, unable to find waiter, and there is a weird pow-wow happening with the higher ups every visit. Just sitting in the corner, not helping or watching, just chilling on phones.

Perfect Date Spot in River North - Edit
Amazing, Japanese-style cuisine and great ambiance. Upscale feel (and prices), and what you’d expect from a premier, River North restaurant. And… it’s 100% plant based!

Just Wow! - Edit
We tried to get reservations over their website on a Monday night and couldn’t. So we went and took our chances. Monday night is Monday Maki (rolls are $8) and the place was jam-packed. We sat outside which was actually perfect. We ordered dishes to share: Crispy Rice roll which was my ultimate favorite; Firecracker Roll which I thought was just okay. It was better with the dunk sauce; Thai Lettuce Wraps which were really interesting and good; and lastly, my second favorite: the Avocado Lime Tartare which came with yucca chips. So yummy!

Total hit with my coworkers - Edit
I suggested Planta Queen for our team dinner while visiting Chicago for a conference. We had 15 people so we made reservations last week, and they were able to accommodate us with a fixed menu. They served us all the hits, including the torched and pressed roll, my favorite. My team, who are all omnivores, raved about how good it was.

Great food - Edit
Great food. Service was good - not too busy. Nice ambience. I enjoyed the level of heat in the spices, but some dishes are on the spicier side.

Just like Toronto Location - Edit
Didn't eat at this location per se but it looks like and has a very similar menu to the Toronto Planta Queen location, so named because it's on Queen Street! This one has outdoor seating though, so win!

Fancy! - Edit
One of the fanciest restaurants around here. Great selection of shareable dishes. I strongly recommend the bang bang broccoli and summer rolls. I'm surely coming back on Mondays for their AYCE Maki Monday (after 5). Amazing service and great vibe.

I love plants queen! I got the dumplings and I thought they were yummy. I was happy to see them on Uber eats. Their matcha cheesecake was great! Enjoyable but probably would have been best to eat at the restaurant.

Try the bao sliders if you’re a mushroom fan! - Edit
Went here a while back while visiting family and can’t wait to go again!
Read moreWe had ordered a lot of things to share and try but a table behind us had recommended we try the bao sliders. I’m so glad we did because we ordered extra and I still haven’t stopped thinking about them.
It is on the expensive side but a really lovely visit if you’re able to.

More upscale - Edit
The food was great. My only con was that it took too long to bring food out, for example they brought my husbands entree out and mine came like 20 minutes after his and he had finished eating and we’d been sat there for a while. To be fair, it was a Saturday night and we showed up with no reservations. They brought us a sushi roll to make up for the delayed timing. They did this without us complaining about the wait! I appreciate the service and attention to this issue. I’m not sure if it’s typical for them to bring 1 entree out before the other or if it was due to the reasons I just mentioned. The food was delicious and I’d recommend going there! Probably best to make reservations a few days ahead.

Planta is always a must - Edit
Best upscale vegan dinner I’ve had is planta in any city where there is one. Thrilled to find this one in Chicago and it lives up to the reputation of the spots in NYC and Miami.

Room for Improvement - Edit
Their small dishes always impress! Larger/main dishes usually leave something to be desired. We've also been to the NYC location and prefer the decor/vibe here, but service was mediocre. We never received the drink we ordered, and all plates come out at once. There's not really enough room on the tables if each person orders more than one item. We come back for their sushi plates!

Really tried to love it - Edit
I discovered Planta Queen in NYC 2 years ago. Our meal was so delicious, we went back multiple times and again last year and were always impressed. I have also visited Planta Queen in Toronto and was impressed there as well.
Read moreBut something about this Chicago location just doesn't do it. I've tried out this location 4x and it's consistently hit or miss. The smaller plates tend to be incredible, at least i thought that until my last visit. I've had the torched and pressed, the eggplant nigiri, the baked crab and the dragon roll. The torched and pressed was phenomenal, the eggplant Nigiri was excellent the first time i had it but not the second, dragon roll was great, and the baked crab left something to be desired especially for the price. I have also enjoyed the queen Caesar, the Japanese sweet potato, and the gyoza. The sweet corn dumplings and the 1000 layer potatoes were just okay.
We have noticed that the entrees are always the most underwhelming dish - the worst we had was the General D's Cauliflower. For a vegan restaurant at the caliber of Planta Queen, I was shocked to find raw tofu chunks in this dish. Terrible watery texture and zero flavor. I would expect something like that in a cheap Chinese restaurant, but Planta Queen, really?!
I was super excited to finally get to this Planta Queen location for brunch, as that's what made us fall in love with Planta Queen in NYC. We went yesterday and it was our final let down that told us that we won't be eating at Planta Queen Chicago again.
I can't speak at length about the service, as I've only ever been seated at the bar. Even when I went at like 4pm on a Tuesday. Maybe this is my fault because I've never made a reservation, but I also never needed one in NYC or Toronto to be seated at a table and receive excellent service. Every time except once, being seated at the bar I felt like an after thought (maybe that's what you're signing up for being seated at the bar??).
We recently went to the vegan restaurant Bloom in Chicago, and decided that Bloom will be replacing Planta Queen for us. I'm sad to say it, but I gave Planta Queen many chances and can't take another let down.
