PLANTA Power - Edit
Call me a lucky ducky, because I just so happened to be within driving distance of its grand opening night, 29Sep22. I became a Planta fan whilst on vacation in Miami. Their Chicago location is gorgeous and elegant. It's perfect for dates, families, business lunches, solo dining, or hanging out with friends. You can dress up or down (but I'd take caution on how "down" you dress; jeans and a t-shirt are just fine for weekdays. You may want to dial it up on weekend evenings, or you could feel out of place - if you care about that sort of thing).
Read moreBeing that it was their first day of serving the public, there was a learning curve for the staff. This didn't bother me. Everyone was very pleasant.
I noticed that the Chicago menu differs from the Miami one. This location didn't have my favorite dessert, but they did have my favorite appetizer!
BANG BANG BROCCOLI -
deep fried broccoli covered in a sweet and spicy peanut sauce. I will order this every time.
JACKFRUIT WINGS -
they weren't on the Miami menu so I wanted to try them. They were...different. Not horrible, but not good (to me) I wouldn't order them again.
PINEAPPLE FRIED RICE -
ordered sans celery and cashews. Deliciously flavorful cured rice, which was even more prominent when I warmed up leftovers days later.
BROWNIE A LA MODE -
it was just ok. Neither the brownie or the ice cream were outstanding in any way. (Both the brownie and the ice cream at their Miami location are phenomenal).
If you're familiar with their infamous, humongous, delicious, soft chocolate chip cookies, be advised they didn't have them here. Maybe that'll change over time. They DO have the sushi here though.
Planta is definitely a vibe. Can't wait to go back to try more of their Chicago menu.

Missing protein - Edit
What a beautiful place, delicious food and drinks, and great service!
Read moreBut i have a big problem with the lack of substance to the dishes. I think there were two dishes that featured tofu and one with just egg (we were there for brunch) on the entire menu. Most of the meat replacements were fruit, veggies, mushrooms or jackfruit.
I asked, and we were told that most of the patrons are non-vegans, so it really concerns me that people will have this experience of veganism as so unsatisfying. Plus, the portions are so small!
We had:
- Chow Fun Noodles from the brunch menu - this was the one dish with just egg (and such a small bit of it...) and it was our favorite.
- Unagi eggplant - beautiful and smoky
- Bao slider - good but so small
- Crispy gyoza - okay
Pros: Delicious, beautifully presented food, Gorgeous space, Great service
Cons: Most entrees had no protein component

100% Vegan - Edit
You would not believe this is 100% plant based, every dish had so much flavor and such creativity. We tried most of the rolls, the small plates and a few bowls. For dessert, we had the matcha cheesecake and the brownie, both were superb. Overall, our favorites were probably the Udon Noodles, Cauliflower Tots, Torched & Pressed sushi and the Mapo Mushroom over rice. However, we were so impressed with everything we ordered. Nick, our server was top notch, so professional., helpful and friendly. #Veganuary

Would leave 10 stars if I could - Edit
For us, this was the best vegan restaurant (experience / food) ever! We loved the place and enjoyed all of our dishes. We can highly recommend the chili peanut noodles, the jackfruit wings, the rainbow rolls and the chocolate brownie!
Read moreThe menu was quiet large and the service was great, too. Honestly don’t know what else I could be asking for.

Great vibe & vittles - Edit
This is a great spot for a night out on the town: gorgeous bar with creative craft cocktails, delicious and varied menu with something for everyone - every design element of the atmosphere & ambiance feels just as thought out as every item on the menu. You can come here whether you’re craving a snack or a meal - whether it’s sushi, noddles, salad, or just a drink.

Cons: Expensive

Great review. I agree it is expensive compared to an average vegan restaurant. However, I compared to our old annual dinner in the city before going vegan, and it was roughly the same as Ruth's Chris or Joe's, without any harm to animals as a huge bonus! We did have two bottles of wine, and probably tried every roll, so way over ordered.

Wonderful variety, lacking service - Edit
I tried truffle fried rice, jackfruit wings and spinach dumplings - LOVED the subtle smoky, earthiness of each. Good non-alcoholic options and fast turnaround from order to table...but we had to ask for a sever twice and spent almost half an hour waiting for someone to just notice us. Also much more expensive for a few dishes than I thought.
Read moreThere was a sort of pretentiousness in every interaction that rubbed my partner and I the wrong way. Again, good food but I wouldnt come back.

Pros: Huge ingredient variety
Cons: $120 for two drinks, two apps and one entree

I hope you give the service another try, they really seemed to have figured it out since opening. Nick, our server was fantastic and we had numerous people clearing our table and bringing out dishes non stop.

We Wanted to Try Everything! - Edit
Weekend birthday brunch with Ube Mochi Waffles, Crispy Fluffy Berry French Toast, Warm Wonton Soup, Crunchy Chili Tofu, Kale Caesar, and Fried Sweet Potato Tater Tots. Almost everything was really really amazing. The restaurant and atmosphere is beautiful and enjoyable. The prices are pretty high, but I could see us coming back for a special occasion. It took us a while to figure out what we wanted because everything looked so good. You have to set reservations early in advance.

LOVE - Edit
My husband and I went here tonight to celebrate our wedding anniversary. We 100% made the right decision! The food was absolutely amazing and service was fantastic as well. We tried a few different things and both loved everything. I’m so glad I thought to make a reservation because they were SO busy!

Food was good with slow services - Edit
The food was good but nothing to write home about. The food services takes a long time from the kitchen, and the Waite staff was not attentive. There were times that them seemed to avoid eye contacts. I always had to raise my hand high to flag them down. I did take my time to enjoy my meal and it was not even about me rushing because I was short of time.
Read moreI overheard next table customer was a bit upset it took them so long to give their order. They said something like “We are here for lunch not dinner.” The Waite person replied, “ That is how we do it here.” Oh boy! I would be even more upset if they was said to me.
If they are slowing down the service to show customers that they are a very upscale restaurant that is not how to do it. It is to ready the body language of their guests and access the diner’s whole dining situation so to be attentive. Upscale restaurants treat their guests as they are the VIP, and it’s not to fit your “way” to every guests.
Why would I go out to dine and allowed restaurants to make me wait for my meal? Come on! After I told the waite person I am a bit tired so I like to order a dessert to go. I waited for a good 10-15 minutes. This was a late lunch hour so they were not busy at all.

Just okay. - Edit
Cocktails were great. Food was just okay. Our dragon roll had literal pieces of charcoal instead of broccoli tempura. The potato dumplings and wonton soup were standouts.
Read moreCould not get a glass of water until well after our food was served. Or a second spoon for our soup. And one of our cocktails was cleared while still half full.
Our experience in south beach was fantastic so we chose this location for our anniversary dinner and we were sadly disappointed.

Good, not great - Edit
We tried like ten different things; all of them were good but nothing was amazing, especially for the price. In a vegan centric city like Chicago, there are a lot of better options!

Chicago finally has another very good upscale vegan bistro. - Edit
I’ve eaten at other Planta locations (Miami, Ft. Lauderdale, NYC) and they are always spot on. No knock on Althea, which has been the only upscale vegan joint in Chicago for years. Althea is great. Now this is great, too.
Read moreMy wife and I went with another couple, and we ordered heavy on starters and then we each got entrees. We shared everything family style. We finished with a couple of desserts. Everything was great. The food was fresh, interesting and fairly portioned.
Bring lots of cash, as it’s not cheap. Count on about $60-$75 per person, without alcohol.
