Vegan in GR

One of the only 100% vegan spots that we found while visiting Grand rapids. Our first morning we stopped it was set to be 90° with a lot of humidity so the kitchen was closed for the breakfast menu, but they did have a lovely spinach, radish, and cucumber salad that precisely hit the spot. The tea and coffee options were delightful. In my experience, occasionally gluten-free items can be rather dense / heavy in nature, but everything here was really light and flavorful. We returned a second time on our way out of town and had a jalapeno cheddar bagel that was out of this world. Someone with me had a lemon blueberry muffin that was also lighter than expected with a little bit of a cornmeal flavor but was quite delicious.

One thing that did perplex us was that they advertise as 100% vegan but do include honey as an option for some of their coffee/ tea creations

Best Bakery in Grand Rapids

Rise is THE vegan spot in Grand Rapids. It is the place I go to for weekend morning pastries. It is the place I take out-of-towners. It might be my favorite cafe/restaurant/bakery in all of Grand Rapids. It definitely epitomizes all that I feel Grand Rapids could be.

Rise is a bakery on the West Side of the river that specializes in pastries that are vegan, gluten-free, oil free, and soy free. Their mission statement is to provide tasty options for any allergy. This is a huge hurdle for sure, because you’d think once you take all of those things away, what is left to work with? Rise rises to the occasion and delivers diverse and delectable creations for the residents of Grand Rapids.

All of the options at Rise are tasty, and I have tried quite a few. There is something to keep in mind, however. The pastries are dense. These are thicc bois. I recommend to order less than you initially think. One donut can fill you up. Two donuts might make you feel bloated. I recommend the yum tarts, oatmeal creme pies, and the donuts for least dense, and in my opinion tastiest, options.

Not only does Rise stand on its own as a unique foodstuffs offering, they also have been busy creating an outdoor seating and community space behind their building. They had an outdoor concert series, with themed food offerings, last year that I absolutely loved. I hope they continue this series into the following years. It is a great spot for artsy, vegan locals to gather.

Rise is awesome. They’re great. Seriously, go check them out. If you eat a vegan doet you have to check them out, and if you’re not, I promise you’ll like it too.

Pros: Entirely Vegan, Wide selection of tasty pasteries and deli foods, Outdoor seating and community events

Cons: Food can taste dense

Phenomenal bakery and coffee shop, amazing options

Rise Baking Co offers a huge variety of vegan sweets, including cakes, cupcakes, donuts, scones, and more, with a rotating menu every day. Their daily menu offerings are posted in Instagram in the morning.

Prices are super reasonable, given the fact that all items are vegan, and gluten and soy free.

A relaxing atmosphere with a very aesthetic interior. Great for studying or working.

Parking is a bit difficult, with only a few spots out front. I wasn’t familiar with the area, but I’m sure if you are there is more parking available nearby.

Pros: 100% vegan! , Friendly staff , Atmosphere

One of our favorite bakeries!

From the brunch food to the baked goods, everything is vegan and so good! My wife and I will often stop here to make sure we are stocked up on desserts for the week. They also occasionally have events with specially made meals.

Pros: All vegan, Delicious, Not too expensive

3.5 Stars

I had this when they were first starting out and would love to try again since they have a brick and mortar location. It was pretty good as far as vegan and gluten free baking goes but I'm sure they've since improved. I love how the store design looks on instagram.

A True Gem!

We ate breakfast at this incredible cafe when in town overnight for a funeral. I am so grateful that this bakery/cafe is both vegan and gluten-free. The atmosphere is warm and welcoming, the staff is attentive, and the food is DELICIOUS! The next time we are in town, we will DEFINITELY eat here.

Be sure to call the bakery for hours, menu changes, etc. as they are going through a bit of a transition right now. They are only serving cafe foods on the weekends right now. This may change over time, but their website has not been updated to reflect these changes.

*I met one of the owners briefly. Super friendly.

Even my non vegan/gf friends love it!

I love this little bakery. So many choices and all are vegan, gluten free, soy free. You can do special orders for breads and cakes too. They post what the changing menu is on the instagram every day. Love the oatmeal cream pies and buckeyes. You can also find many of their baked goods at local markets and coffee shops.

Pros: Great flavor, Variety, Gluten and Soy free

Cons: Can get busy but that's because it's so good!

Cute Bakery

So many cute creations that are always changing! Love to stop by and pick up treats. I did their one-time brunch in the fall as well which was fun to sit outside and enjoy some breakfast and coffee.

One of THE best vegan bakeries!!

Probably one of THE best bakeries I've ever been to in the country!! Vegan, gluten freeze and soy free, are you kidding me?! I am traveling for work and will be returning every day until I leave. Today I had the strawberry cinnamon roll and it did not disappoint!! I wish I had saved it to heat up at home, but it was gone in no time. I got an everything bagel and buckeye (chocolate covered peanut butter ball) to go, and both have been delectable as well. I can't wait to try more in the next couple days. The staff was upbeat and the place definitely had rush hour waves. Happy to see others also enjoy it there!

Pros: So many options, Friendly staff

Every time's a good time

Tons of options, creative seasonal flavors, friendly staff. Step out of your comfort zone to try something new and you'll be pleasantly surprised😄get there early to beat the crowds, and be prepared to wait in line. It's worth it! Love having an option to grab a quality coffee and a fresh hearty breakfast as well as a snack or two for later all at once!

Pros: Reasonable prices , Fun rotating & seasonal options, Indoor/outdoor seating

Would rate higher than 5 if I could

Okay so I spent a lot of money here - it is a little expensive. But for $30 I got two coffees, 2 buckeyes, a poptart, an apple fritter and a pumpkin cinnamon roll. Every single thing was absolutely amazing, we meant to spread them out over two days but ate them all within the space of a few hours. The cafe is cute as heck and the staff are all really kind - complimented my outfit and my partner and I together (so seem to be LGBT friendly!).

Amazing Vegan Bakery

I came here while on vacation, and had to come back the food was so good! I first got the BLT. I haven’t had one since before I went vegan, and it was so satisfying being able to have one one again! The bacon was to die for!! I also had the breakfast sandwich that had the same bacon and I have no words. This bakery was phenomenal! Definitely can’t wait to come back.

Good Option in Grand Rapids

I'd give 3.5/5 if possible. It might be that I'm too spoiled by all the vegan bakeries in Chicago, or maybe I just really need gluten in my baked goods. Tried the hand pies, muffin, cupcake, and cinnamon roll in a dessert-filled pit stop and found the flavors pretty good! Everything was so dry, though, made it tough to really love any of the goods.

That said, who knows? Maybe the stuff I got at the end of the day was dried out, maybe it was an off day. I'll certainly try it again the next time I'm in Grand Rapids, but I'll probably be pulling the emphasis from sweets to their meals.

Pros: All vegan!, Nice store, Good location

Cons: Dry baked goods

VEGAN DELICIOUSNESS!!!

I'm a vegan who loves gluten, so I was concerned about Rise being a vegan and guten free place. I was VERY pleasantly surprised! The poptart- looking treats were OUTSTANDING. and the donuts and quiche were very tasty!

Pros: 100% VEGAN and DELICIOUS!

Cons: A tad pricey, but A) understandable, B) worth it!
