disappointing lack of vegan food

Unfortunately Satkar isn't vegetarian anymore (Happycow notified). I originally wrote a very good review, as they seemed to understand veganism well, but on my last visit I was disappointed to find that the 'set' they had said they were making vegan included non-vegan dahl. "It's just ghee sir" they said indignantly, after I found it in the description of that item on the set menu, so they clearly don't care to understand veganism, and instead just remove any obvious dairy products like cheese and serve it. Even if one could get them to make the set vegan without the curry (made with paneer/cheese) or the dahl (or I think the dessert) it would hardly be worth bothering, and it didn't seem like many of the a-la-carte dishes could be vegan either, or if they could/would really bother to find out whether, say, the pizza bases are made with milk/egg (they just kept saying "no dairy sir"). On the upside, if you can find anything to eat, the setting is nice and they put on traditional dancing in the evenings. It's expensive for what you get though (by local standards). So Shree Lal was the only place I could find in the thamel area which really makes the effort to cater to vegans.

Pros: nice setting, traditional dancing in the evenings

Cons: few safe vegan dishes, staff don't bother to check what's vegan, a bit pricey for Kathmandu
