Good but a little uneven - Edit
There are three things I have a hard time finding in vegan versions, and which consistently disappoint me when I do find them: mozzarella sticks, Reuben sandwiches, and cannoli. I found all three at the Butcher’s Son! And for the most part, I was satisfied.
Read moreThe mozzarella sticks were the weak link for me. They were too big and the cheese didn’t have much taste. They were better when they were a little cold, but not something I would order again.
The cannoli was excellent. I was thrilled!
The Reuben was very good. Unlike a lot of vegan Reubens, it had all the right stuff. I would’ve liked a little less meat on the sandwich and a little more French dressing, but overall with a few tweaks it was probably the best one I’ve found in 20 years, and I’m picky! So it was held to a high standard.
My partner got a falafel gyro and it was excellent. The falafel was really well made!
Overall, I would be excited to go back even if not everything I tried was a perfect 5 stars. I picked some of the toughest items on the menu (in my opinion) and was pretty delighted overall.
Also the service was good and the vibe was cute!

i love this place and it’s super close to campus which is great. they also have donuts and pancakes on the weekend which is super fun. i’ve gotten lots of things and they’re always good! huge portions too so you’ll have leftovers

I really like this place. The pastrami Rubin was delicious! They even have donuts! My favorite tho was the garlic fries… so tasty. I liked the way pesto chicken too. Super tasty! Oh and the pickles are really fresh and crisp.

Worth the drive from Freemont - Edit
As vegan deli’s go, the is among the best of the best. From a massive and tasty Reuben to kids grilled cheeses that my picky eaters rated “50 out of 50”, this place is great. The Butcher’s Son will from now on be a regular stop on our visits to the Bay Area.

This vegan deli was a delight! I got the steak banh mi with a side salad and my partner got the lobster roll with old bay fries. While we agreed mine tasted nothing like steak and his tasted nothing like lobster, we loved our food. The deli is unpretentious and relaxed. I’m excited to come back already!

The bread was utterly incredible and the vegan bacon was very good. I want to come back here for brunch and I really enjoyed my visit, but the fried chicken in my sandwich was too greasy to finish. Everything else I ordered was great, though, so I think I might have just ordered the wrong sandwich (I ordered the K.B.L.A.T.)

An excellent place to go if you’re super hungry and want something vegan and hearty to eat. My favorite things to order are the Death by Potato Gyro, Pastrami Reuben Sandwich Jalapeño Business Sandwich, Bacon Mac Salad and the take & bake Pot Pies. How have I not rated this place before? My favorite vegan place in the Bay Area, at least for comfort food. Shizen is pretty nice… anyhow, especially with their beautiful rose garden, this is a great place for brunch on a sunny day.

What is there to say that hasn’t already been said? This place is phenomenal. It has a huge menu, and I’ve yet to try something that wasn’t delicious. The tofu “mozzarella” sticks are a real highlight. The portions are very generous, so consider sharing a sandwich if you’re not too hungry.

I ordered the Rueben on sourdough with mozzarella instead of rye and Swiss. It was soooo good. I also enjoyed a pistachio cannoli. The cannolis were sitting in a case so I thought they may be a little soggy. It was not, rather, it was perfect! The sandwich prices are a little high but really, the Rueben was so big, it would have been enough for two. I think I was the only customer who cleaned her plate; I saw other customers pack their leftovers to-go. The coffee is free (w oat or soy) so that was a bonus plus now I’ll be up all night. Indoor and outdoor seating. Ample street parking. Wish I lived in Berkeley.

Went for dinner, so excited to try and was excellent. We shared the fishy appetizer, it was delicious and my favorite item we got. I had the pastrami which was also good. My son got the buffalo chicken sandwich also yummy. My wife got the fried squash sandwich, surprisingly tasty. To end had the strawberry cheesecake, very nice texture, wish it had a little more tanginess to it. If in Berkeley definitely stop here.
