GREAT food - Edit
I had the aubergine teriyaki and it was so yum! The noodles were a bit salty though but great taste overall! Highly recommended!

4 stars only because it’s not 100% vegan - Edit
I really enjoyed the menu that has an interesting variety of food from different places. I would say it’s probably 70 to 80% vegan and the rest is a few vegetarian items. Food was very tasteful and well presented. Plates were big but very qualitative. The place is nice and you can sit outside in a cute little London street. I had the beet burger (really good) and I’d definitely go back to try something else.

Sublime Vegan Food and Lovely Service - Edit
The Gate had been on my list for ages and I wasn’t disappointed. Everything I had was delicious and so beautifully presented. I had hot olive bread with hummus dip and a ginger spritz mocktail while I was perusing the menu. For starter I had courgette flower filled with homemade ricotta, roasted butternut, basil and semi-dried tomatoes served with beluga lentils and aioli. My main course was Aubergine Teriyaki - grilled aubergine layered with shiitake mushrooms and wasabi duxelles, coriander pesto and peppers served with teriyaki noodles, mango and pickled ginger salsa (this dish was sublime).
Read moreI didn’t eat all day, in readiness for my meal and I clearly surprised the waiter by ordering the trio of desserts!

Sophisticated - Edit
The Gate is an established group of vegetarian restaurants with a number of outlets in London now. The food is tasty and beautifully presented. There are a number of vegan options but when you add gluten free into the mix the options drastically reduce. Good to insist to waiters to ask the kitchen what can be modified into gluten free, they helped. The menu has been pretty much the same with rotational variations for years so unfortunately it is getting bit boring for those of us that live in London. Also it is very disappointing they refuse to accommodate gluten free options in their Vegan Supper Club. A real shame as they seem to pride themselves in being innovators/pioneers.

Lovely dinner - Edit
We had a very lovely dinner here. There are plenty of vegan choices. We had the Wild Mushroom Risotto Cake, which was nicely done, and the Root Vegetable Rotolo (not vegan). For dessert, we had an unusual Prune and Apple Crumble that could have been better. The service was excellent, the ambiance soothing.

Some dishes are okay, some are not. Slightly pricey but lovely venue. Our group left very underwhelmed overall.

Amazing food! - Edit
The wild mushroom risotto cake, the gate’s beetroot cheese burger and the peanut butter brownie were just perfection. Perfect size and just delicious. Most of the dishes were or could be made vegan. 10 out of 10.

Phenomenal food - Edit
I've been here a few times now and the food here is phenomenal. The menu is almost all vegan and their desserts especially will blow you away. This weekend I tried their Full English for brunch and it was without a doubt the best tofu scramble I've ever had.

A new branch of The Gate - Edit
I really enjoy the food at The Gate restaurants. Seymour Place is their third London location and is more central (not far than Hyde Park). It has a nice atmosphere and the waitress who took our order was friendly, although they were still settling in at the new location.
Read moreBeautifully presented plates of food. Really enjoyed the banoffee pie for dessert.
Update Dec 2018: I have visited a few times now and the food is generally good (the chocolate snowball on the festive menu was just perfect). I just wish the service was better and a bit more personable. With more staff, better training it could be a lovely place to eat.

Overpriced and bland food. - Edit
The food is tiny for what you pay. It's also a bit bland. We had red Thai curry, tortilla and the aubergine main. It was nice but didn't have that spice kick you'd want from Thai or Mexican food.
Read moreThe puddings were ridiculously small. The strawberry mousse was barely a few mouthfuls and so laughingly overpriced. The tiramisu was okay. The mille foille was bland. My friend paid £3 for a little scoop of ice cream to try to improve the mousse!
The restaurant looks great, but lacks any punch and I'm bored of the same old menu that's been around for years at the Gate's other two branches.
Great location, friendly but rushed staff and a nice looking restaurant. Lots of vegan options.
Pros: Lots of vegan options
Cons: Over priced, Tiny portions, Bland food

Saw this on happycow and put it on our to-eat list for London. It's a nice place and the menu is quite varied. We shared a soup, the mezze platter, and the peanut butter brownie plus 2 scoops of ice cream. Everything was delicious.

Wouldn’t come back. - Edit
Food was alright. Over priced for the meal size. I had the red Thai curry since they were out of the 2 options i originally wanted. Service was terrible. Host was very rude since we didn’t have a reservation but the place wasn’t busy and nobody else was waiting. The server was also very rude and I’d never come back here and would never recommend it to anyone. All 4 of the people in our party were extremely confused about how bad the service was. With so many other vegan options in town, there is no reason to try this place.

Quality - Edit
My girlfriend and I had a good time here this quiet little place is great. Definitely need another visit to try more of the menu, as a vegan I was spoilt for choice. Food took a little while to arrive but there's a good wine list for the wait.

Mind-blowing... but inconsistent - Edit
The Gate is like a box of chocolates...you never know what you're gonna get. When it's at the top of its game, it is absolutely outstanding and definitely 5 stars. But based upon my experiences it's inconsistent.
Read moreSomething that does seem to be consistent is the amazing quality of the desserts. The dark chocolate snowball is pure chocolate indulgence and one of the best things I've ever eaten. I would also recommend the brownie and cappuccino cheesecake. These are the desserts my dreams are made of and they quickly put to rest tired tropes of boring vegan food.
When done properly, the miso glazed aubergine is succulent and tender (and one of my favourite things to eat), but irritatingly sometimes it isn't cooked enough to get it to this level. The Thai red curry is very flavoursome and the polenta chips with the basil mayo are satiating.
Whilst the food service is normally relatively fast, I once waited over an hour for brunch. Whilst the brunch is very good (I recommend the English breakfast) some of the portion sizes are half of what they really should be for brunch considering the prices (e.g. avocado Benedict).
As far as I can recall I have always had polite service here, but it tends to be understaffed. On a Monday night - my birthday - I once waited 20 mins trying to get someone's attention just to get the bill when it wasn't even that busy.
I think it's worth noting that compared with two years ago, they have vastly improved vegan options which is fantastic. I went for their Christmas banquet last December and every part of the meal was superb.
I really hope they improve consistency as it can be top notch, which kind of makes it more disappointing when it isn't.

Amazing vegan fine dining - Edit
Love our meal here last night celebrating my other half’s birthday. Recommend booking a table as the place gets full quickly! We had three courses, all delicious and although small portions, incredibly filling and satisfying. A great place to go for a celebration! Our mains where a little cold so we sent those back but got some free polenta fries (which were amazing!) for free as an apology. Staff where lovely and accommodating and we felt well looked after. Can’t believe the chocolate bomb was vegan and gluten free - hands down the best dessert I’ve had since going vegan!

loved so much booked two Saturdays in row - Edit
Amazing menu. Clear on menu what is vegetarian and vegan. I had vegan.. onion tart to start, red Thai curry main and chocolate brownie each time. Friend had tofu starter, tortilla main and loved it. Flawless food. Previously been to sister restaurant in Islington. Cannot fault food. But beware they charge "discretionary" 12.5 per cent service charge. I had a table at 5pm and 7.15 on Saturdays and both times charged. First time without realising I added 10per cent tip on top too.

Needs to try harder. - Edit
Been here four times over the last year, hoping, alas, that the shoddy service and inconsistent food quality was an irregularity. But it's not. On my visit last week (I wasn't going to go back after a poor meal in December but a friend had booked it), after waiting 45 mins for our non-arriving starters, got up & hunted down a waiter to find out what the hold up was - only to be told that they didn't have any of what we had ordered.
Read moreFood generally was 'meh' and with so many restaurants offering great vegan options - this place really needs to pull it's socks up and staff need to, at the very least, pretend to be bothered.
Pros: None.
Cons: Consistently poor service.

great food served with style - Edit
Not only do I require vegetarian (or vegan) food, but I eat a minimum of carbs, often making my choices limited in other vegetarian restaurants, that are heavy on the rice, potatoes, other grains, etc. But at The Gate I found a choice of a number of nice dishes, and enjoyed my meal immensely. I had the Aubergine Schnitzel and the Tofu Tikka. My spouse had the soup of the day and the Green Dragon. Everything was served with a lovely presentation and was very tasty. The service is slow, but that wouldn't keep me from coming back.
