Keep coming back

The Gate is one of the places in London I keep coming back to over and over again. A place that works for every occasion, dinner and drinks with friends, on a date or just dining by yourself. The service and food is always good, and they have great options on traditional British meals.

Pros: Great service , Fresh ingredients , Good wine!

Cons: Pricey

Not Impressed

The Gate is a vegetarian/vegan restaurant in Hammersmith. The building has a is very particular entrance that gives the impression you are going to church. Even the smell in the hall isn’t the best, kind of Sunday-school like! The restaurant itself is on the first floor. The room is fairly quiet and doesn’t have many tables. The ceiling is very high with a large window that allows the whole restaurant to be lit without the need for artificial light. The furniture is very simple, kept to the bare minimum, something in between minimal, arte povera and wrought-iron; a style that lately seems to be a must in London, if you want your bar to be instagramable and hipster at the same time. The décor has been completed with green leafy plants and industrial style nude bulbs hanging from the ceiling. The jazz music in the background makes the atmosphere enveloping and sophisticated, making you feeling like a freelancer drinking black americano in Brooklyn.
During the weekend, The Gate offers the Sunday Roast menu which includes two courses for around £20. The artichoke terrine with a dried tomato paste and grilled bread left me somewhat confused, too salty for my taste, if eaten all together with bread and sauce, it’s not so bad. The presentation of the dish was very pretty and the bread was freshly baked. The beetroot burger with fries and greens on the side is not their forte. The salad has fresh taste with the tasty Dijon mustard vinaigrette. The burger instead, pretty rubbery, basically a pink chemical agglomerate that can easily be found at the supermarket and the matchstick chips were really thin, on the plate more as a decoration. The service is really slow, even when the restaurant isn’t crowded.
It wasn’t a bad experience, but few things were just not right. I don’t know if it deserves another try…

Pros: location, Friendly staff

Cons: long wait, bit pricey

The Final Days of May

We came here at the end of May to serve the website I love. Having experienced The Gate Islington a few times it was a pleasure to have the opportunity to sample their Hammersmith operation. I think I like it even better. Two extremely solid meals, a Thai green curry and an aubergine teriyaki. Pleasant interior, welcoming exterior and nothing inferior. With a carafe of house white and the 12.5% discretionary but socially mandatory “London tax” (which to be fair does go directly towards staff tips here rather than their wages) the bill came to £54. Quite cheap actually considering the couple next to us spent £129. Here is London, home of the brash, outrageous and free.

Pros: Fantastic setting , Great entrance , Ultra vegan friendly

Definitely worth a visit

I would highly recommend The Gate. The food was delicious and service was great. Really good vegan options. I’d second the aubergine starter as being a highlight, although none of the food disappointed.

Pros: Good vegan options, Delicious and interesting food , Good atmosphere

Cons: None- alcoholic cocktails not the best

Nice, but...

Found this place by chance via the app. Super out the way restaurant, with great decor and friendly staff.
Super interesting menu....we had the burger with polenta fries....but....we found everything to be too salty as in the first bite was really tasty but after the 3rd/4th bites I was overwhelmed by how salty the burger and polenta fries where. Shame...
The toffee pudding was great. I ended up drinking a bottle of mineral water in a few seconds afterwards.

Pros: Nice, Quiet, Friendly

Cons: Salt, Salt, Salt

Mushroom Festival - Tasting Menu

This is by far one of the best vegan meals I've ever had.

My only criticism is they did ask us to be early, which we were, and then told us to go away until 17.00pm. Staff promptly locked the door. We had nowhere to go and so sat outside in the freezing cold until they let us - and all the other guests who arrived early in - at 17.10pm. Apart from that service was excellent.

We have found that Tasting Menus tend to be all artsy and feature a dot of this and a smear of that but light on actual food. That is not the case at The Gate. Sure, I didn't want 7 full plates of food either and they got the portions spot on. It was also - at ₤50 a head - still affordable. Which is often not the case with these kind of food events. Didn't like the 'discretionary' 12.5% fee which is kind of compulsory as it's added to your bill.

Apparently they do an annual Mushroom Festival and this was it. The menu was written in fancy food speak but basically we had -

Dumpling with a Sweet Chili Sauce
Consomme
Arancini Balls
Galette topped with Salad
Gnocchi and Pesto
Black Rice Cake, Wilted Greens + Creamy Mushrooms
Semifreddo with Brandy Sauce

It was a good meal and a great evening.

Pros: Good food, Portions spot on, Lovely venue

High end dining

I had heard lots of hype around the Gate - so my expectations were high - but I was little disappointed. The food was of a good standard, but for the price I would expect more. Perhaps because it was busy it wasn’t as good as usual. I don’t know. But the desserts were delicious, they were definitely worth the price. And they did have vegan options which were inventive and original.

Pros: Vegan options , Delicious dessert, Inventive dining

Cons: Expensive

Spoilt for choice

Great vegan options, in a relaxed friendly setting. The food was delicious, topped with amazing desserts. My non-vegan companion said it was the best chocolate brownie with cream they’d ever tasted. Service was a little bit slow - but only to be expected with a large party in...and an apology was made. Will definitely return again next time in London.

Pros: Lots of good vegan options , Relaxed atmosphere, calm space , Excellent quality food

Gone downhill

I loved the Gate when I came in October but the last two times it’s been a bit rubbish. Still going to try one more time because it was just so amazing the last time I came!

Lovely place for a special occasion

Wonderful food. Friendly staff. Lovely location - a little hidden away but felt like a retreat from the hustle and bustle. We ate here with family before a concert in Hammersmith and it was a really special meal - delicious drinks, mains and desserts. Would recommend. Food beautifully presented.

Pros: Delicious food, Friendly staff, Beautiful presentation

Classy, delicious, creative food

We ate twice at The Gate during our brief stay in London. For a late evening meal we chose the Summer Menu, and a day later we enjoyed lunch there too.

Both times the food was exceptionally good. It is very creatively presented - which means that you are not quite sure how what you order is going to look when it arrives. What you can be sure of is, though, that it will look beautiful and taste amazing.

Some people have said that the portions are small. They are not large - this is not 'belly-timber' food. The portions are, however, perfect. Each meal has clearly been developed to tantalise the tastebuds, excite the palate, and satisfy the appetite. The attention to flavours, colour, design and presentation is excellent . . . and creates a very fine dining experience indeed.

In particular I found the desserts exceeded my expectations. For our dinner menu - we both enjoyed a Strawberry Tart - delicious. When we went for lunch, we had Eton Mess and the Cheesecake . . . both were gorgeous.

If I lived in London, I would be heading to The Gate for every special celebration meal I could.

Service was also to a high standard.

Pros: Great range of vegan options, Beautifully presented delicious food, Great service

Gate Hammersmith

I had a bit of a disappointing experience at Gate Hammersmith. The menu was very misleading about the vegan dessert options. The waitress failed to tell us that actually we ordered the same thing twice between the two of us in a gigantic portion and that the vegan dessert option is not the same listed on the menu. The food was OK, though far too sweet. The vegan cheesecake was not a cheesecake at all, but a mousse. When we mentioned that to the otherwise friendly waiter, he said that "you cannot make a vegan cheesecake, this is why it is like a mousse". This was super-disappointing to hear at a supposedly vegan-friendly restaurant. I do not look forward to return there at all.

Pros: Food looks good, Nice atmosphere

Cons: Menu not clear about vegan option details

great food, great service

We last dined here over 20 years ago and loved it then. No surprise that when we revisited it it was as good as ever. Great choice and lots of the vegetarian options can be made vegan. The polenta chips are a must have.

Pros: location close to Hammersmith Bridge, really top notch presentation , great ingredients prepared with great care

Excellent and attractively presented food

I enjoyed a very tasty bowl meal here and was impressed by the attractive presentation. Restaurant was full and noisy. Food was excellent. I had the Thai green curry with a roll of rice with sesame seeds on the ends. I splurged on a glass of Austrian “natural” wine, meaning it’s above and beyond organic/biodynamic. Be aware that they automatically add a 12.5% service charge, and there was a campaign on to add a pound for a charity, so I spent £25. Too expensive for me to be a regular outing.

lovely lovely lovely

Had dinner there last night, hadn't been for years but not disappointed with food, it was delicious. Lentil terrine was full of flavour but then tasted halloumi Indian style and that was heaven on a plate! Tortillas for main which were so very different from normal veggie tortillas you'd get elsewhere, simply gorgeous. Only down side was how slow it was to get a drink, the staff were busy all the time but not enough of them really. The food was not slow to come but could have done with a glass or two !!! Will definitely go again (even my meat eating husband was impressed!)

Beautiful

Beautiful building!
Beautiful service!
Beautiful food!

The place we wanted to go for lunch had changed menus, so we wound up going to The Gate. This should have been our first choice all along! Everything was absolutely wonderful! I had the Wellington, which was simply amazing. Everybody else was equally pleased with their meals. Whether you are a vegetarian or not, make a point to visit The Gate. You will not be disappointed.

Terrible staff but reasonable food

Not a patch on the Islington Gate!
Terribly staff. They couldn't find our table booking. We're slow and inefficient. The smoke alarm was set off (albeit by a customer) and no one knew how to turn it off. It was horrifically loud and no one came to explain it to us and when we asked we were told by a jumped up wait or that it wasn't his problem. We didn't even make it to pudding without having to leave. Would never go back.

Cons: would give 1* if possible , dreadful staff

Highly recommended

My partner and I ate here in the early evening before seeing Kate Bush at the nearby Apollo, so my experience of the Gate may be coloured by being wildly excited about seeing Kate Bush, and the fact that the restaurant was playing Kate Bush, but we thought it was fantastic.

We made a reservation through their website at about 4.30pm, for 5.45pm. Turned up 20 minutes late to find they'd held our table despite the place being completely full. We didn't have time to enjoy the whole menu, but we shared some bread, olives and oil for a starter. These were completely delicious, so flavourful and interesting to taste. Each of the mixed olives had a unique flavour, the bread was mixed also, and the oil flavoured with rosemary and chilli. For main courses I had some wild creation with squash piped into a potato roll, refreshing salad and creamed artichoke. I was too engrossed in my own food to remember what my partner ate, but whatever it was he was equally engrossed in! Polished off with a nice glass of wine and a local beer, and done in plenty of time to get to the Apollo, we could not have been happier.

While it is expensive, I felt the price reflected the quality and inventiveness of the food. We hope to return some time when we have leisure to try the starters and deserts!

Pros: really excellent food

Vegetarians will love it, vegans less so...

When my boyfriend was still vegetarian rather than vegan, he asked to go here for his birthday. He had a great dining experience but, as a vegan, I didn't. There weren't many options and it seemed like they couldn't be bothered with being imaginative for vegan food. Having been to Manna and seeing what could be done it was extremely disappointing. The worst thing is the vegan options of meals are just the same meals with the dairy/egg item removed!

On the plus side, the restaurant itself is really beautifully decorated (or was before it closed for refurbishment! ;) ) and you really feel you are somewhere upmarket - moreso than any other vegetarian restaurant I have been to.

Pros: High quality, Romantic

Cons: Poor deal for vegans
