The Best Vegan Cakes in Japan

As someone with experience in baking, I can confidently say that what the vegan marshmallooow is doing is nothing short of incredible. Their cakes are made using Japanese rice flour, which is far more difficult to work with than the typical gluten-free flours used out country and overseas. It takes real skill to get the texture right—and they’ve absolutely mastered it.

What’s more, their cakes don’t just meet vegan standards—they exceed expectations. They taste even better than many traditional vegan cakes, and they’re on par with cakes that use butter and other animal-based ingredients. I can only imagine the amount of dedication and refinement it took to reach this level. Truly impressive craftsmanship.

Avoid if you're a dessert bob

The desserts, while nice in presentation, are expensive. Skip this if you do not consider yourself a dessert snob.

Perfect orange cheesecake

Friendly service and a beautiful selection of European and Japanese sweets, including vegan nama chocolate, assorted cookie boxes, puddings and cakes. I tried the strawberry shortcake that everyone talks about and the orange cheesecake. The latter was my favourite - it actually tasted like a no-bake cheesecake, not the usual vegan cashew cream variations. All in all, a great shop both for treating yourself and finding gifts.

Gluten-free and halal-friendly. A top-class vegan sweets shop with delicious tastes!

If you're looking for delicious vegan sweets, this is the place to go!

Not only are they delicious, but they're also beautiful to look at.

All of the creams are exquisite, so you can enjoy high-quality sweets to your heart's content.

The most popular items are the chocolate cake and strawberry shortcake.

In addition, the raw chocolate and the surprisingly rich macarons that will make you wonder, "This is vegan!?" are also very popular.

We recommend them with confidence!

A Must-Stop for Vegan Treats in Ginza!

I had such a fantastic time discovering The Vegan Marshmallooow in the Ginza Mitsukoshi department store basement! If you're looking for incredible vegan sweets in Japan, you absolutely have to stop by this counter.
The Nama chocolate was a total revelation – so rich, smooth, and just melt-in-your-mouth delicious. My only regret is I couldn't bring it home on the plane since it needs to stay cold! Definitely something to enjoy right there and then.
I also grabbed a bunch of their cookies and a box of the light, flaky leaf pies. Everything I tried was incredibly fresh and packed with amazing flavor. They really have an impressive selection of baked goods, and you can tell the quality is top-notch.
Highly recommend checking out their counter if you're in the area!

Delectably delicious!

A little tricky to find but well worth it! They have a nice range of cakes, tarts, macaroons, puddings and more. I tried the seasonal fruit strawberry tart and the strawberry shortcake. Both were some of the yummiest desserts I had in Japan. Just be mindful that they only offer takeaway.

Pros: Beautifully presented desserts , Delicious food, All vegan range

Cons: Takeaway only, Can be difficult to find

Beautifully presented patisserie style cakes!

We tried the mango and coconut pudding and the strawberry shortcake.

Both were really tasty, really well decorated, and I’m certain you’d be able to feed these to a non-vegan and they wouldn’t have a clue unless they really craved that fresh udder juice taste in their whipped cream.

There was a really large selection of cakes in the display cabinet, and they also had an assortment of different biscuits, cookies etc. on the counter as well as some tasty orange muffins.

The staff were so friendly and seemed genuinely excited when they asked if we were vegan and said yes! Even though it’s in a fancy department store, the prices are still really reasonable for anyone used to U.K./London kinda prices.

How to find The Vegan Marshmallooow:
Enter the department store building and head to the escalators. It is located in the food hall area on the 2B floor, so you need to go down twice. Once you come off the escalator, it’s it’s pretty much the second stall on your left, so walk left towards the wall and you’ll find it.

Beautiful but underwhelming

The cakes really are a joy to look at, and if you feel you've been missing out when walking past the vast amounts of french patisseries in Japan, I'd definitely recommend coming here.

But none of the cakes blew us away. They were all good, but I've had far better elsewhere. They're not cheap, but par for the course in this kind of upmarket place. I'd give it 3.5 if I could.

Top-notch deliciousness in Tokyo(Ginza)

There are many vegan sweets that are only available in Ginza. There are also an increasing number of gluten-free and halal-friendly products, all of which are delicious and special, making them perfect for souvenirs or gifts.

The strawberry shortcake and chocolate cake are popular, and you can enjoy beautiful, high-quality vegan cakes. The vegan macarons are also impressive, with a rich flavor that makes it hard to believe they are made from vegan ingredients.

You can also buy cakes and eat them in the lounge on the 9th floor.

The vegan Christmas cake, which will fill you with happiness, is also an item you cannot miss.

Awesome vegan bakery! A must-visit in Tokyo

Lovely vegan bakery selling exquisitely beautiful cakes and pastries! Their strawberry cream cake looked like it was straight out of an anime and tasted amazing. Everything was over 1000 yen so it's not cheap but well worth it.

It was a bit hard to find, located in a large food hall with many other vendors. There's no eating area in the immediate vicinity, but there's a serene outdoor terrace on the 9th floor.

Fantastic Pâtisserie

I've had the pleasure of trying several cakes from The Vegan Marshmallooow, and each one has been absolutely delicious. While they definitely sit on the higher end of the price spectrum, the quality and taste truly justify it. If you're looking for a truly decadent vegan treat that doesn't compromise on flavor, this is the place to go!

Among the best of its kind (if you can hang with refined sugar)

My companion was drawn to the strawberry cakes in one of those “Oh, I’ve never had a vegan version of this” moments, so we gave it a go. They clearly know what they’re doing here, as the flavors and textures are quite refined — not unlike the sugar. Speaking of which, we rarely eat refined sugar anymore and our bodies aren’t used to it: One tiny cakelet shot us up on a short sugar spike and then we promptly came crashing down, wondering why we do this to ourselves. But of course that’s on us, not them. If refined sweetness of plant origin is what you’re looking for, this place does it very well indeed.

Luxurious vegan treats

Hidden in the basement floor food hall, this shop has an exquisite range of vegan cakes and sweets. I went late in the day so they had sold out of a few things. There is no seating here so everything is for take-out. The prices are pretty high too. They used a lot of (unnecessary) packaging for the one piece of cake that I bought.

Pros: Delicious all vegan treats

Cons: Expensive, Packaging, No seating

Expensive but worth it!

Best cake I've ever had! One little cake costs around 1.000 Yen - but it tastes amazing! Trust the recommandations of the stuff!
A little difficult to find. If I remembered correct on floor B1 (look on the Google Photos to see where the stand is). You can eat it in floor 9.

Pros: Amazing taste, Fancy look

Cons: Expensive , Difficult to find

Delicious cakes and souvenirs

The most beautiful vegan desserts. Located in the B2 food level of Mitsukoshi Department Store in Ginza, they have beautiful ready to eat cakes (pictured here are 2 that we whose to take back to our hotel for dessert, which were carefully packaged btw) and boxed items that were perfect souvenirs. The cakes we tried were so fluffy and tasty! The boxed cookies we brought back were crunchy but also delicious, and surprisingly buttery tasting. I recommend stopping by and checking out their wide selection while supporting the only vegan option in this food court.
