Charming and tasty - Edit
This sweet little restaurant was a terrific veg treat after my hike. Lovely presentation. Flavors were a little "light" but very nice all around to get to experience Buddhist food. Note: cash only.

Amazing shojin ryori! - Edit
Went here in December 2021. One of the best shojin ryori I’ve ever had in Japan! So good and satisfying.

Fantastic meal in most amazing building and location - Edit
This is a restaurant that specializes in shojin ryori or buddhist cuisine so no animal products used.
Read moreIt has various set meal options plus some sides and desserts. All a feast for the senses.
Every single thing we ordered was very very good.
Note that the ice-creams sadly weren't vegan.
The location cannot be better and the building is fantastic, has a lovely atmosphere and the staff is super friendly and kind.
Their little in-house souvenir shop is very cute

Nice little spot - Edit
The ambiance was really cool - the "windows" were fully open, to the view of beautiful Kurama with the sun shining, the smell of Incense in the air.
Read moreThis whole vibe made the meal special; though I found this type of cuisine to be a little challenging to really enjoy, I still polished off almost the entire "Recommended Set"!

Pretty good - Edit
The food at Yoshuji was very simple and nice - just what I expected. If you’re not into light flavours this probably won’t be your thing, but I thought they did a great job at making simple light food taste yummy.

Pleasant surprise - Edit
We visited Kurama on a whim and stumbled across this place on our way to the temple! Everything is vegan with no animal products used (the ice cream is not vegan but it comes from the place next door) We got their two soba dishes as well as a warm chestnut and red bean soup. All was amazing and the staff was so sweet! Really lovely place I would absolutely return to!

Great spot after a hike - Edit
We had the most popular dish and really enjoyed the food. The hot rice drink was particularly nice after a cold hike. I likes everything but the konjac gel but that’s just my preference regarding texture😄

Steamed buns - Edit
We stumbled upon this very unassuming looking place after a full day hike at Kurama. We got all three types of steamed buns for take-away, all of which were delicious. I didn't take any pictures, but they are also very beautiful, and the dough was coloured (one normal, one pink and one black with charcoal).

Delicious - Edit
We each had a set of the very delicious food. Afterwards we had some coffee and I think the milk that came separately was cow milk, so just be cautious about this. Everything else was definitely vegan. Each set was quite expensive, but it was definitely worth it and all the ingredients were locally grown. The set consisted of rice, mountain potatoes purée, soup, tofu, salad and other small dishes that I can’t name.

foraged Buddhist temple vegan feast! - Edit
So glad we heard about this place in lonely planet. This is temple food, which is traditional Buddhist fare - vegan, no garlic, onion or oil. We had to make the most of this visit so we got both the Hot soba with mountain vegetables (rich broth and a delightful selection of fungi, veg, pickles and tofu) and the deluxe set menu, which included similar vegetable dishes as well as cold soba, soup, rice, eggplant, and fruit. It was heavenly. A very special experience, especially as the place sits on the beautiful mountain side.

Banging Vegan Food in Kurama - Edit
I get the feeling that this place could in fact be vegan however didn't ask about the ice cream on the menu so not entirely sure.
Read moreLocated just near the entrance to the Mt. Kurama Shrine, this little gem is hard to spot, especially when your wifi has no service in the mountains! All signage is in Japanese except for one handwritten "cooking uses all vegetables" sign which tipped me off.
Meals range from a modest 1200 yen for soba noodles to a more hefty 3200 yen for a large traditional shojin-ryori meal.
IMHO the cost is well worth it for the experience and delicious, fresh and authentic Japanese cuisine. Get stuck in!
Pros: All vegan (maybe?), Great atmosphere, Friendly staff

Delicious zen vegan meals - Edit
Location:A five minute walk from Kurama train station (Eizan line); turn left at station exit, walk up street to the steps at the Kurama -dera temple entrance. As you climb the stone steps, the restaurant is on the right, just before the gate where admission tickets to temple grounds are sold. It has the traditional split curtain (noren ) and a price list in English is posted beside the door.
Read moreAmbiance & menu: Rustic decor with a fire pit and kettle in the middle of the dining room, Western-style wooden tables & chairs, big windows. There is an English menu with choices of soba topped with mountain vegetables (cheapest) to multi course shojin ryori ($32)with soba, stuffed tofu, pickles , vegetable broth, mushrooms, chestnuts, Sesame tofu, tempura veg, sticky rice with mountain vegetables, etc. This was a feast --and while there are less expensive versions of the same meal with fewer dishes on the menu, I'm glad I ordered it. It was much better than the shojin ryori lunch I had in Arashiyama. I recommend visiting Kurama, a lovely mountain village and easy half day trip from Kyoto, the temple, and the restaurant .
Pros: Vegan & delicious , English menu, Friendly helpful staff
Cons: Smoking is permitted
