New owner, less vegan options - Edit
Ecco used to be one of the few (if not the first?) reliable vegan friendly restaurants in Cologne, but the restaurant now has a new owner. There are less vegetarian/vegan options on the menu, and gone is the legendary seitan schnitzel with mushroomsauce. Instead we had a spaghetti and a burger/fries. No complaints, they were both okay, just be adviced that Ecco is no longer as focussed on veggie food as it used to be.

ok but wouldn’t recommend - Edit
we had the breakfast buffet and they had several vegan options although it is not focused on providing a full vegan buffet. The vegan mostly consisted of bread different salads and tapenade as the only spread. all toppings spreads and sauces where either dairy or meat products.
Read moreThe vegan options where only partly marked and when we asked about the contents of different options on the table we got unsure answers and ot felt in general like they didn’t truly know what they contained. When asked about whether the bread was vegan they simply said “yes its bread”. It just tells me that they didn’t have enough understanding of what products are and are not vegan.
some of the salads where good and the the bread was fresh fruits good etc. but it was really only what you would expect and considering the price of almost 20 euros with a drink we were definitely underwhelmed.
there was also small stuff like that we asked for vegan butter and they forgot it twice, then having to go to the counter and wait for them to come out so they wouldnt forget it. The service was not on paar either with the price class.
i would not recommend it, given that the food was simply ok, it felt overpriced and generally not good customer experience.
Pros: all you can eat buffet, fresh veggies, not a bad location
Cons: Food, Customer experience, Price

Rather expensive for what you get - Edit
For each over 16€ I would expect a quite good or at least large burger or appetizer plate. Though, both were small dishes and only okayish. It's not bad, but feels too expensive for what you get.

Brunchen - Edit

Vegan friendly for a long time - Edit
For me, Ecco is one of the first reliably vegan restaurants in Cologne. There is a brunch that includes many vegan options that are clearly separated from the rest of the buffet.
Read moreAt tea time there is always at least one vegan cake selection. The coffee can also be ordered with vegan milk alternatives.
There are several high chairs, but they cannot be reserved in advance for the table. This is a bit stressful at times, but so far it has always worked out.
We were also able to celebrate our civil wedding here in Corona times. We were able to reserve a table, the business continued on the side. The communication regarding the vegan menu went really well, so that our guests could even choose between three main courses. In addition, there were vegan tapas as an appetizer and a vegan chocolate cake as dessert. Even the non-vegan skeptics were pleasantly surprised.
Unfortunately, it seems that recently the owner or at least the strategy of the restaurant has changed. Anyway, it's not quite as great as it used to be.

Probé las dátiles en abrigo de zucchini, totalmente recomendadas. Vienen con una ensalada y pan con hummus, todo deli. Vienen tres dátiles en el plato, pienso que podrían ser al menos cinco!

Best vegan breakfast in cologne so far 😍 - Edit
We went there for breakfast on a Tuesday and had to wait for like 30 minutes but it was totally worth it, when we saw the waitress coming with these huge plates. 😍 The vegan breakfast was so good and I would highly recommended it! The restaurant has a lot of tables in and outside and it is very comfortable to sit outside in the sun.

Gutes Frühstück - Edit
Mein Mann hatte den veganen Overnight Oat mit Sojamilch. Optisch nicht überragend, aber geschmacklich ordentlich. Total überzeugt hat uns die vegane Frühstücksplatte. Leckere Antipasti, Hummus, Datteln, gebratener Räuchertofu, sehr leckeres Brot… wir fanden es absolut empfehlenswert.

So and so - Edit
I‘m a bit torn between. The first dish I had was absolutely delicious (dates in zucchini), the main course (vegan Wiener Schnitzel) was really subpar (just a thick, mushy, bland slap of textured soy, breaded and deep fried). The warm potatoe salad on the other hand was again pretty good though. So, there seem to be vegan dishes they do pretty awesome, and others not so much, so I guess you‘ll have to try and be lucky.

Terrific Brunch - Edit
We had a buffet speedbrunch (1hr) for for €14.90 each and filled ourselves silly. Lots of vegan options (Inc tofu lasagne, Rösti, scrambled tofu) with continental breakfasts bits with yoghurt etc. The vegan is marked clearly with a V. They had one buffet tray containing meat but otherwise vegan with some veggie.

Unfortunately the worst brunch I’ve ever had in a cheap looking environment - Edit
Amount of vegan options would in theory be sufficient, but unfortunately everything looked super boring and ugly and taste the same. They for example served plain white tofu with tomato (tomato mozzarella style) with a tiny amount of pesto - super plain and tasteless. Then there was Asian style noodle salad which pretty much just contained noodles with a couple of carrot pieces. The place itself looks ugly, not cute at all. But the service was quick and very friendly and attentive. We had to complain about the food and asked to pay only for a plate each, instead of the brunch plate, and they offered to give us 3 out of 4 plates completely free so that we just had to share 15€ (Speed brunch price) decided by 4. but honestly. That was very nice.

Many vegan options at breakfast buffet - Edit
We had the breakfast buffet today and we found much vegan options, by guess more than the half buffet. There were salads, pesto, mie-noodles, wedges and potato fritters, bread, cakes, vegan rice pudding, fruits and much more. There are also non vegan products available. To drink we got coffee with oat- or soya milk and fresh mint, ginger and citrus tea.
Read moreThe Ecco has many seats and table in front of the restaurant and also inside. The service was a little bit unkind, they persisted to guide us to our reserved table only in the opening hours, so we had to wait 5 minutes in front of the restaurant. They also forgot one coffee. But overall it was a fine visit at the Ecco.

Peaceful place - Edit
Peaceful place very close to tram & bus station "Chlodwigplatz" in nice area of town called "Südstadt" with lotsa shops for everyday shopping (supermarkets, postal office, jewelery, bakeries, comic book store...). Huge outside area (50 seats or so). Real kitchen, so you may modify what you order. Many vegan options, all freshly prepared, also dessert (carrot & chocolate cake). Very good coffee. All high quality. Friendly staff. Regular people. They like garlic but will find solutions. Direct connection to central train station by bus / tram / subway.

Read moreThe brunch was totally awesome, half of the dishes were vegan, and everything is marked "vegan, gluten free, nut free, dairy free".
