Better than what I ate when I went to Shanghai

I didn't have great eating experiences when I went to the real Shanghai last month so I was very happy to have way better food at Midnight Shanghai. The menu clearly marked the vegan options and there were a lot of them.

The location is great, upstairs at Riverside with a dining balcony overlooking the river. It was cold so we dined inside. We were lucky enough to be seated in a booth which was very comfortable and the perfect size.

My favs were the eggplant fries and the salt and pepper fries with the spicy seasoning. The spicy seasoning was not at all hot, which I was worried about, and was very tasty. The potato was fluffy and perfectly cooked for the fries. I loved the eggplant. We also enjoyed the vegan dumplings, mapo tofu and the flat rice noodles, all with tofu.

The staff were super lovely and helpful.

We booked via First Table so dinner for three, including drinks, 2 entrees and 3 mains which we all shared came to $80.

Great spot

Great atmosphere and good food. Tons of vegan options. My favorites: sweet and sour tofu, cauliflower bao, and dumplings.

Good vibes but average food

I had the fried noodles. They had a good proportion of tofu and veges to noodles and the staff were so lovely and the decor was great, but I'm a foodie and the flavour was pretty average. Good location and good vibes but average food.

Pros: Decor, Staff

Cons: Food was meh

Vegan option clearly marked

Share dish style restaurant. Vegan items clearly marked. Bit on the expensive side but otherwise yum

Average

Very average ‘upmarket’ Chinese. The food I had was bland and could have been purchased for half the cost elsewhere. I would not return as they charge a premium price for a standard product.

Mappo Tofu

Plenty of vegan options. Mappo tofu was great, not too spicy.

Second time’s a charm

I wasn’t too impressed on my first visit here - I thought the butternut wontons were a bit over cooked and the cauliflower bao a bit undercooked, but my second visit was definitely worth it. The food was all delicious - including mapo tofu, noodles, coriander pancake and gyoza - definitely worth visiting and exploring the menu. #Veganuary

Pros: Well marked vegan options on menu, Shareable dishes

Cons: Try a few things as not everything may be great

Yum

The food was full of flavour. Staff really helpful even making me a 'small' side of greens as I ate on my own. Just yum. Really nice atmosphere, you can sit inside or out on the balcony.

Pros: Really tasty, Lot's vegan options , Helpful staff

Cons: Not vegan
