Vegan small plates in a modern scandi setting

They had a good selection of vegan plates and we ordered padron peppers, fries, teriyaki tofu, tender stem broccoli and artichoke wings.

Underwhelming

I expected the food to be really tasty for a vegan restaurant, but it was nothing special. I really fancied a burger so despite hating fake meat, I ordered the burger at £10 and fries for £4.50. The burger was really small. It tasted fine but did look and taste like meat. I don't understand why a vegan restaurant chooses to use a meat substitute for their burger, there are so many better options. (Apparently they changed from Beyond Meat a few weeks ago but it was pretty much the same as that).
The restaurant seemed style over substance. It's called Shrub yet all the plants are plastic.

Pros: Decor (minus the plastic shrubs)

Cons: Fake meat, Lacking flavour

Eating our way through the menu

We were impressed by Shrub's offerings at Vegan Camp Out 2024 (particularly the szechuan fries!), so when we decided to get away for a few nights in Chester, visiting their restaurant was at the top of our list.

Firstly, we weren't prepared for how gorgeous the restaurant is. As if being located in The Rows wasn't beautiful enough, the decor and atmosphere were stunning, and they even had a cosy outdoor balcony area. I bet that would be lush on a summer evening!

We were absolutely spoiled for choice and struggled to whittle down what we wanted to order. I had the teriyaki tofu, artichoke wings, and delicata squash, and my partner had the "lamb" ragu and the szechuan fries. However, we had a little nibble of each other's food.

Everything was delicious and cooked to perfection! We decided we needed to come back and try more of the menu before our time in Chester was over. So we went again the following day!

This time, we shared the pumpkin tortellini (not pictured), tenderstem broccoli (not pictured), brussels sprouts, baby carrots, and potato terrine.

My partner and I were firm haters of sprouts in ALL forms, but we both thought they were one of the best dishes we had eaten over the last 2 days. My partner also isn't a fan of tofu usually, but that was also one of his favourites.

What I love about Shrub is their quality of ingredients and creativity. I love that they make veggies fun and the main event without the need for every dish having a protein/meat alternative, which is why it's no surprise that even non-vegans enjoy eating here so much.

The staff are all so lovely! On our first night, we were served by Eloise and Tim, who were both super sweet and welcoming. I am gutted that we didn't get the names of the people on our second night as they were fantastic, too. But the people working at 7.30pm on Wednesday 11th December 2024 deserve a shout-out too ❤️

Hopefully, we'll get to come back someday!

Shrub

Loved it here! This place is a bit special and I can’t wait to return. The food is creative, flavoursome and cooked really well. It’s small plates so it’s recommended to order a few per person, but they do have larger plates which are slightly bigger portions. I went for the pumpkin tortellini and the lemon posset for dessert, both mouthwateringly good. Next time I’d love to try the Sunday Roast. Voted best restaurant in Chester 2024, having visited I can understand why.

First visit

The food is amazing. 6 of us visited,1 vegan,1 vegetarian and 4 carnivores. A bit sceptical on what the others would think about not having animal 😩 with Sunday lunch but they loved it and no animals harmed 😄 We will be back

Pros: Sunday lunch, Staff, Atmosphere

A Sunday lunch of dreams

We first had Sunday lunch at Shrub a couple of years ago, I've been dreaming of it since and finally got to return this Sunday. It was again absolutely top notch and with the addition of a Yorkshire pudding this time. I haven't had one of those for about 20 years! I only wish I lived closer, I'd be a regular.

Pros: Friendly staff, Lovely atmosphere, Amazing food

Cons: The lights are a bit too close to the tables

Can’t wait to return!

Too much food to try and not enough time (or stomach space). Literally wanted everything. Partner and I shared about 7 plates for the main meal - the teriyaki tofu and artichokes were my favourite (the artichoke sauce was banging). Ate too much so had to share the apple gyoza for dessert - the ice cream was amazing, meant to ask where it was from but forgot. Great cocktail & wine list. Friendly staff and reasonably priced. Lovely setting - the balcony seating area looked especially nice.

Beautiful Food. Loved it!!!

I am not local to Chester, and when opening the Happy Cow app, I realised there are a few vegan eateries in the city. Feeling spoilt for choice, I had to make a decision, and today, I feel I absolutely made the right one!

Shrub is a vegan restaurant situated in central Chester in a desirable location. Their menu is seasonal, and although they offer a few mains, they primarily serve small plates, including mezze. Every single dish was enticing, and I really struggled to decide on what to have. After much deliberation, I decided to go with the Pumpkin Tortellini, Savoy Cabbage, and Potato Terrine. My fellow dinner was also kind enough to share their Teriyaki Tofu and BBQ Courgette.

I enjoyed every dish, and each one felt unique and well thought out in addition to being attractively presented on the plate. However, the stand-out dishes for me were the Pumpkin Tortellini and the Teriyaki Tofu. The tortellini came in a creamy wine and miso sauce so delecious that I was desperately trying to savour it as much as possible by spacing it out between bites from other dishes. The tofu from the Teriyaki Tofu was the nicest tofu I have ever had from a restaurant, and the flavous were perfect. Greedily, I opted for two desserts, the Apple Dumplings and the Cookie Dough Blondie, and both were divine and very enjoyable!

I will absolutely return to Shrub for more small plates and also plan to visit for a Sunday lunch, too. I highly recommend this restaurant to vegans and non vegans in and around Chester and advise you try to find a table outside with a view of Chester High Street surrounded by beautiful flowers and shrubs (I rather blindly missed this seating area completely but plan on sitting there next time as it looked beautiful). This is a wonderful vegan experience not to be missed!

Pros: Beautiful Food, Great Menu, Good Prices, Pretty Dining Spaces, Lovely Staff, Good Location

The BEST vegan roast dinner!

Amazing roast dinner, bursting with different flavours and a vegan Yorkie to top it off! We've eaten in Shrub multiple times, but the roast dinner tops it. Try if you ever have a Sunday in Chester.

Also Shrub's homemade soft drinks are excellent and taste like cocktails (without the alcohol ofc)

Pros: Vegan yorkie, Super crispy roast potatoes, Homemade soft drinks

Fabulous food!

Shrub is a restaurant and cocktail bar right in the centre of Chester, with views over the picturesque Rows and a unique cocktail menu. I had the Thai Mule (sweeter than expected, but delicious) and picked three small plates; while everything sounded tempting, I went for the teriyaki tofu (lovely), the potato terrine (amazing, especially the crispy edges) and the frickles, tiny little pickled gherkins, battered and deep fried to perfection, accompanied by curry mayo. The portions are just right, and three small plates should be enough for the average person. The only thing I didn't like was the fact that the speakers playing music outside and the sounds of buskers from the street below mingled into a horrific cacophony, so if you're neurodivergent, I would recommend sitting inside. Overall, though, Shrub is definitely a must-visit if you're vegan in Chester!

Pros: Delicious food, Portion sizes just right , Great value
