One of the best outside London - Edit
This place was much bigger than expected, with outside seating aswell, and yet it was very busy. As far as I can see, the owners work there aswell, which is great. This is a small plate venue, which also serves Sunday lunch. So impressed we went back a few days later, and we were remembered! Welcoming atmosphere and lovely decor. Note toilets are not accessible and are up many stairs. Central location with 10% service charge added to bill, booking advised. Gluten free oat milk is the option for hot drinks. Gluten free bread is apparently homemade. Dessert choice is limited. Plates can come out sporadically and not necessarily in the order or pace you want them. They choose not to have real candles, but I think this would be a nice touch.

The service was exceptional. Staff went above and beyond to explain the menu, give recommendations, and make us feel genuinely welcome. It’s rare to find service this attentive and friendly, it really stood out.
The food was stunning, both in taste and presentation, and the atmosphere was great.
It also meant a lot to us that the team was clearly LGBTQ friendly and accepting, something that sadly isn’t always guaranteed so thought it was worth mentioning.
We’ll be returning again and again!

The decor is simply beautiful, it has two parts to it. Loved the spiral staircase and the chairs. .Attention to detail was just perfect and I always notice the decor. Also loved the plates and glasses. My girlfriend and I visited for a late lunch. We had 4 of the dishes to share.

One of the best eateries in Chester for vegans - Edit
Shrub is the cornerstone of plant-based food in Chester. It’s been around for quite a while now but the novelty certainly hasn’t worn off and its mix of small plate options and ‘proper’ mains is as fresh as the day it opened.
Read moreService is always excellent, the vibe is great, and the menu, which changes slightly over time, is interesting and delicious. We even held a birthday at Shrub in the function room upstairs and it was amazing, enjoyed by even the most cynical of non-vegans!

Love it here; we visit maybe once a month. Love the little sharing plates, love the Sunday roast. Not had anything that we haven’t really enjoyed. Lovely location, atmosphere and staff. A must visit for lunch or dinner if you’re in the area!

came to shrub for a cocktail after dinner and was tempted by the options on the dessert menu. our waiter enthusiastically recommended the chocolate brownie and it did not disappoint. it paired beautifully with an espresso martini.

We visited on a sunny Friday afternoon and really enjoyed sitting outside. We had focaccia, tenderstam broccoli, teriyaki tofu and ragù and for dessert a chocolate mint cheesecake and lemon posset. I could not choose a favourite dish as they were all delicious although I will mention that the lemon posset was perfectly refreshing to finish the meal in the sunshine. I feel the food is very good value and we were made to feel very welcome.
