Worst summer rolls I've had - Edit
I've lived in Hilo many years but never tried this place. The wife and I wanted to try somewhere new, and since this place was listed on Happy Cow with good reviews, we stopped in. I know vietnamese can be hit-or-miss, so I ordered a usually safe option, the tofu summer rolls, being careful to check that it was vegan. By "safe" I mean that summer rolls are usually pretty hard to mess up, being fresh lettuce, tofu, and noodles in a wrap with some peanut sauce.
Read moreBut in this case, he summer rolls where filled with dry kale/lettuce, brown bean spouts, a few rice noodles, and hard, dry tofu. Every ingredient tasted as if it was slightly past its expiration date. The tofu I guess was supposed to taste like lemongrass, but actually just tasted strange and off-putting. For the dipping sauce I was expecting a peanut sauce, but what I got was instead a strange mixture of what seemed like hoisin sauce and oil, which wasn't appetizing.
My wife got a non-vegan dish with rice, so I won't describe it in detail, but she also had the impression that every ingredient in her dish except for the rice wasn't fresh or appetizing.
There are better vietnamese options in Hilo for vegans, Lam's Garden or Vegan Shop, for instance. I would avoid this place.
Pros: Staff seemed to know what was vegan
Cons: Food was stale and not fresh, Vegetables were wilted, Sauce wasn't appetizing

Love this place! - Edit
Awesome vegan and vegetarian options! My go to is the lemongrass tofu bahn mi and a kumquat lemon iced tea. Food is flavorful, portions are generous, and their drinks are really good as well. The family who owns Tiger is always very friendly and accommodating every time we visit.

Vegan pho and tofu banh mi are on the menu, naturally vegan. There are also a tofu rice vermicelli dish and tofu rice dish which can be made vegan.
Read moreWhen we ordered the tofu rice vermicelli dish, the server proactively asked if we wanted it with fish sauce or soy sauce, and said the included spring rolls contain meat and offered to substitute more noodles instead.
Similarly, when we asked if the summer rolls were vegetarian, the server said they contain shrimp but proactively offered that they could substitute tofu.
The pho was quite big. The banh mi was not very big. Everything was well flavored.
