It Cures What Ales You

One of the pure joys of Manchester (aside from the culture, the musical heritage, the people, and the food) is that, at any given moment, you are never too far from a tap room. Scattered throughout the city, often in the unlikeliest of locations, are scores of dedicated independent craftspeople producing a multitude of fabulous brews. So, taking inspiration from a glorious Tuesday afternoon (I was on holiday, after all), I sought to get on board with this particular outfit.
Ambling up to this unassuming spot on an industrial estate, I first caught sight of the signage from afar. Not long afterwards, however, I found myself unexpectedly accosted by an avalanche of fragrance. Wafting ferociously from within was the gloriously heady aroma of hops - an intoxicating scent that would serve as the backdrop to my entire visit.
With a raft of exquisite-sounding vegan options available, the real difficulty lay in narrowing down my choices. Even though I was looking for a good time, I still harboured ambitions of walking out under my own volition.
My first station call was the Navigator. My fondness for stouts has grown exponentially in recent years, and this nitro version was a wonderful example of the style. Incredibly smooth, with deep, rich coffee notes, it wasn’t long before I had summarily polished it off.
Moving on to lighter-bodied pours, my next two pints - the Sonoma and the Between the Bars - were both wonderfully zesty, refreshing pale ales, with the latter packing slightly more punch than the former.
Starting to feel the effects of my escapades, I wisely eased off the throttle by sampling the Away We Go next. This lower-strength table beer (is there a more gloriously British concept?) was wonderfully light in character and every bit as quaffable as intended.
Beginning to run out of steam, I decided there was just enough room for one final tipple before things went off the rails. That honour fell to the Right About Now, a hugely citrus-forward number with grapefruit taking centre stage.
First-class in every respect, this is somewhere I’ll certainly be making my way back to. Throw in the added bonus of an in-house pizza counter serving a respectable selection of plant-based pies, and I could very easily spend an entire day here.
