Excellent food in a relaxed setting - Edit
The food (and wine) was all very good: we shared bitterballen, all eight courses available when choosing a four- or five-course dinner, then cashew brie (for a supplement, instead of dessert).

Een gezellig restaurant waar doorsnee Haarlemmers komen. Voor aan de straat is ook een terras, zodat je bij goed weer ook lekker buiten kan zitten. Binnen kan het rumoerig zijn, maar de akoestiek is net goed. Er is ook een kat die lekker op een stoel ligt.
Read moreHet serverend personeel is vriendelijk en attent. De eigenaar staat toe dat personeel subtiele politieke statements maken (pro-Palestina uiting op de kleding), wat goed weergeeft dat Broei progressief is, wat goed past bij deze vrije stad.
Er leek ruim voldoende personeel rond te lopen. Het bestellen en uitserveren ging daardoor ook vlot. Soms werden we zelfs door 3 serveerders achter elkaar gevraagd of ze iets voor ons konden bestellen. Dat was zeker niet vervelend, maar wel opvallend.
De gerechten zijn vullend en voor het oog prettig opgemaakt. Ook de gebakjes zijn heerlijk. Het enige minpunt is dat bij de curry korma geen rijst of een naan werd geserveerd.

Broei has been fully plant-based since 2022. I like the atmosphere, but the service level has gone down (due to understaffing?). It’s usually busy, but the early mornings tend to be more quiet.
Read moreUnfortunately, their dishes are usually low in protein. Their ‘meaty’ toppings for sandwiches are often made of vegetables rather than legumes or nuts or seeds.
Dishes I like are the Broei burger of spring 2024 (with oyster mushrooms), shakshuka, fried dumplings, chick-p nuggets and sandwiches with ‘egg’ salad, ‘tuna’ salad and tempeh sateh.
Also nice are banana bread with chutney, cinnamon roll, ‘boterkoek’ and ‘aardbeienslofje’.
They serve excellent homemade drinks as well, e.g. kombucha and lemonade.

The staff are super friendly.
We had the white asparagus dish,the olive dish, the paksoi, the laksa, the cauliflower dish, and the brie. Honestly all to die for 😋
The beer list was also amazing-lots of locally brewed ones.
Seriously, this place is not to be missed!

Bij Broei draait het om groente zo vers en lokaal mogelijk. En dat proef je. Naast de mooie presentatie op je bord, zijn de smaken hemels. De diner kaart is klein waardoor je per gang keuze hebt uit 2 verschillende opties, alles uiteraard plantaardig. Maar ook voor ontbijt en lunch kun je hier terecht. Te veel lekkers om uit te kiezen 💚

Honest food with great tastes - Edit
I went here with my roommates to celebrate one of their birthdays! We had a four course dinner which was great. Everything feels and tastes honest and great flavour combinations. The only thing that bothered us (slightly) was the wait between the dishes. Of course this is not a big issue, but we would have liked less waiting.

I went there at 12 for lunch, one of three tables. After I ordered the terrace got FULL, I'm glad I arrived so perfectly.
The waiters are super kind and the service is quick. I didn't have any expectations for some slices of bread, but what I got almost knocked me out my chair!
I've never seen a mocktail espresso martini so I had just had to get it, the first few sips were amazing but it gets sickly sweet pretty quick. But awesome experience!!
The bread - wow. Crispy crust, unbelievable soft inside, and all the toppings starting from the amazing selfmade ham over to the parmesan match SO well. Every bite is a pleasure.
The boterkoek, I only got to experience something traditionally dutch. Personally I found it too dry and not really tasty, but I guess that means I don't like the dessert in general. Not their fault.
Overall this was an amazing lunch and I would come back any time, maybe even try breakfast or dinner.

Amazing Broei - Edit
We visited Broei on a daily basis during our four day stay in Utrecht and worked ourselves through the different dishes. Our favorite thing was their bread which they serve with different toppings (for example delicious carrot salmon) or alongside soup, humus etc. In addition the coffee is great.

I visit this restaurant almost every week because the atmosphere is always relaxed. Most of the time for coffee and a sweet. My favorites are the Cinnamon bun, 'boterkoek', homemade cookie and the rhubarb crumble. They also have a delicious Chai latte and hot chocolate.
They change the menu for dinner regularly. The dishes are always delicious and have a lot of flavour. Most of the dishes are based on a vegetable.
They have a lot of homemade drinks, like kombucha, ice tea, Iranian limonade etc.

Broei used to be my favorite spot in Utrecht for a morning coffee as well as for their dinners. However, as of late I've been slightly disappointed by some changes. In my opinion, the coffee here used to be way better than it is now. It's not worth it anymore to come here for coffee and something sweet, there are better spots in Utrecht for that (e.g. Kluts and lifes a peach).
Read moreWhen it comes to dinner, the quality is still high (although the dessert this time around was really disappointing) but the prices have gone way up. We used to able to have dinner here with the two of us for around 80 euros easily (we never order a lot of drinks so our restaurant bills are usually on the lower side). However, now it's almost a given to spend around at least 100 euros for 2. If you like to order a couple of drinks each, you are going to pay (well) over 100. For us, that's not really worth it.
Staff is always very friendly and chill. Love the atmosphere. We have been here countless times. Lunch is good and the 4/5 course menus are always surprising, creative and tasty. Just not worth the money anymore if you'd ask me.

We tried the 'wortelzalm' and 'carbonara ' sandwich. Both were so tasty. Some delicious high quality bread and great toppings. Both were good but the carbonara one was excellent. It was cheesy in a way I haven't tasted yet since becoming vegan. The restaurant has a nice location along the water. Our friends tried the pastrami and kroketten breads, they liked them as well! Only wish the portions were a tad bigger. Probably would not be enough if you are really hungry. Nevertheless, we'll be back!

My favourite place in Utrecht - Edit
Broei never fails to disappoint. It serves 3 meals a day and they are all delicious. My favourite breakfast is the pancakes, delicious American pancakes are served every day until noon. They recently introduced a carbonara sandwich and I hope it will stay on the menu! Their dinner is also very very amazing, I took many of my vegan and vegetarian friends here and all of them loved it!
