MUST GO

This place is definitely a must go, even for non-vegetarians or vegans. The service is impeccable and the food outstanding and so delicate. We choose the 6000 yen dinner course menu. This was more than enough! We were definitely stuffed at the end, only with tasty and delicious food. The waitresses are so kind and hospitable. They change the menu based on seasonal produce which is amazing. The interior is also very cozy and you will sit in a private room, very special experience. Must. Go.

Please be aware: reservations are required and they only have 8 private rooms so I assume they fill up quite quickly. #Veganuary

Highly recommended Kaiseki

The restaurant is placed in a traditional Japanese house. Very nice atmosphere and reminded me of Kyoto.
We were seated in a private room and they served Fucha-Ryouri one by one (Kaiseki Style). Everything was delicious and the presentation on point. The amount was also more than enough for me.

For any Vegans visiting Tokyo and want to have a special experience I can highly recommend this place.
I think the Kaiseki dinner was 10.000¥ per person, but they also offer a lunch meal for 3000¥ that I want to try next time.

An exceptional experience

Our first real vegan kaiseke in Japan - an incredible experience. A huge variety of dishes in a picture-perfect (private room) setting, provided by the kindest and most attentive staff. Each more delicious than the last. But, as in most good places in Tokyo, get that reservation early!

Pros: Delicious varied food, Beautiful traditional setting, Kind and attentive staff

Cons: Expensive (but only typically, for Tokyo)

Brilliant experience and service, quite pricey but still worth it.

Beautiful serving and most of the dishes were tasty. All vegan, it seems. A little lower price would’ve made me give it 5 stars

Great experience

This is definitely an experience in a traditional Japanese setting. They bring out little dishes one by one. It didn’t seem like much at first but by the end we were all so full.

It’s an experience.

I lack the words to describe this place and the food. It’s a philosophy, not just eating. This has a price - a very reasonable one.

Pros: Amazing, beautiful food, Super friendly staff, Wonderful place.

Cons: Not the cheap quick dinner - not a minus actually

Worth it

Bon serves Fucha Ryori, Buddhist temple food introduced from China during the Edo period. We only had better Fucha Ryori in Koyasan, in a 4.5 star temple lodging and were served by Buddhist monks. So, yeah, Bon was pretty amazing indeed.

First, you're led to a private tatami room. Walls are thin so hope you get good neighbors (ours were terrible, but experience was so great we didn't even care).

We chose the 8,000 yen even though we knew it was going to be a ridiculous amount of food because we wanted to try everything. Two people switched off serving us, each time delicately placing the food for us and explaining what was in front of us. In regards to this, Bon actually beat temple eating, where I felt rushed to finish. Here we were able to savor each moment with our dish.

The first two things we tried were the most puzzling, also because they hadn't started explaining yet, a little sweet cookie and the tea. I'm assuming the cookie was a palate cleanser, but I didn't particularly care for it. I honestly thought the tea was a watery soup until I re-checked the menu.

Standout items:
* The seasonal soup! Mushroom broth, very rich in flavor. After finishing the soup, the mushroom at the bottom were tender and still full of flavor
* Appetizer of chestnuts and mountain potatoes. Simple and delicious
* Sesame tofu, better like sesame for this one. They're not joking around when they add it on there
* Tempura, including taro, vermicelli noodles, and I believe sweet potatoes made to look like shrimp

Overall the whole experience was amazing, we left feeling very happy, well taken care of (and full).

Pros: Fully vegan, Friendly, Beautiful presentation

Beyond amazing

This place is a must visit in the life of any vegan.

Pure haute cuisine and true Japanese dedication to the perfection of the craft. Easily the best fine dining experience I’ve had since going vegan 5 years ago.

The food had flavours I never even knew existed. The menu was packed full of surprises, spins on classics and known classics.

Seriously, go here now.

An experience unlike any other

This tucked-away little restaurant in a traditional-style house offers a stately multi-course experience of shojin ryori, Japanese temple food. You (and your companion) are alone in a room and each course comes out as a small event unto itself. The food itself is not strongly flavored, but it is balanced, fresh, and utterly thoughtful. This is a unique place and a matchless experience.

Pros: unique, great shojin ryori

Cons: very expensive

An experience, not just a meal

This was amazing - we headed here after wading through the crowd at the Asakusa market & shrine. A complete quiet oasis. The English menu card explains that the 12 (yes, 12!) courses are served in the fucha ryori tradition - a subset of shojin ryori (temple cuisine). Each party sits in their own tatami mat room. Food was delicious, each course bringing something different. Highly recommended!!

Best vegan fine dining experience

That was the best vegan fine dining experience I have ever had. We had the lunch fucha ryori menu with exceptional flavors. You get to sit in a private, japanese style room with a lovely atmosphere and enjoy the food. We paid 5000 yen tax for a 12 course menu, which is incredibly inexpensive compared to what you get.

Pros: Tasty!

Extraordinary

Dining at Bon is a unique experience! You will sit in a private room with tatami matts, the decoration and design is traditional and you will be served by friendly staff. The food is an exceptional, gourmet-like experience. Of course this location is not cheap. Check the website and know which menu you would like prior to your reservation call. The basic menu is perfectly adequate.

Pros: Extremely good food, Unique traditional atmosphere , Great people

If I had only one meal left,

I’d want to enjoy it here, at Bon. It is more temple-like than the vast majority of temples, and has more “wabi sabi” than most tearooms. The owner appears to have floated down to earth from some heavenly realm to spread light, love, and insanely delicious shojin ryori. Cannot recommend highly enough if you are looking for a unique and authentic Japanese Buddhist cuisine experience.

Awsome

My favorite vegan restaurant in Tokyo. Every time I am in town I always make an effort to go there. Amazing food, creative, healthy and just an overall great experience. Although it is on the expensive side I feel like it’s worth every penny or whatever coin you’re using

Pros: Superb quality food, Unique dishes , Amazing atmosphere

Cons: Expensive (but worth it), A bit far from the center

Best food I've have had in Tokyo

I've been to Bon several times. It is consistently incredible. Each course and *each item* of each course is thoughtfully prepared and equisitely displayed. While each time my temptation is to go for a larger course, I am always happier to go with the smaller one because even the smaller set courses are hearty. Given the care in preparation, the beautiful setting, and service, it is an *excellent* value. Reservations are a must.

Definitely 5 stars

We called the restaurant midday Saturday, and was able to book a table the same evening. Was served the 6000 yen menu, and it was fantastic! We loved everything we got served, and you could almost taste the effort and care that went into preparing the food. They even served us an extra dish not mentioned in the menu: tofu made like sea eel. Highly recommend this experience when in Japan. Be aware that the price is exclusive of service charge and tax (respectively 10% and 8%).

Pros: Very tasty food, Calm and quiet , Nice staff

A multi-sensory experience!

We had a multi course meal, it might have been 6 or 7 dishes plus two soups. It all tasted amazing, was incredibly beautifully presented and the staff were so friendly. The building itself is a piece of art as well.

Pros: All vegan, Delicious, Beautiful restaurant

Cons: None

Delicious Japanese feast

The seasonal food was fantastic and the hosts talked us through all the food in English (they also took my reservation in English over the phone). It was incredibly beautifully presented and an opportunity to try lots of small unusual dishes.

The room felt Japanese, we sat on cushions on tatami. The whole experience took around two hours and we left totally satisfied!

It isn't cheap but considering the experience and the quality and presentation of the food it is well worth the price.

Pros: Plant-based , Lots of food , Beautiful presentation

Cons: Reservation necessary

Best shojin ryori we tried

When we arrived, the staff were waiting for us and showed us our private room. It was so cute and the atmosphere very nice. The traditional Japanese setting was impressive; it seemed like we entered another era. The service was fast and the staff very friendly. It was wonderful because they spoke English very well and they could explain every dish to us.

Speaking about the dishes, they were some of the best we had in our life. All the little details in the presentation and the unique flavors of the dishes was mesmerizing. We had the opportunity to taste plenty of seasonal ingredients including plenty of sakura flavored dishes. There was too many wonderful food that we cannot decide our favorite.

It was the best way to finish our honeymoon to Japan and we definitely wish to return someday.

Pros: nice setting and atmosphere, amazing food and presentation, friendly and english speaking staff

Spectacular (but not for everyone)

Executive summary: beautiful ambience of a Ryoutei, attentive service and exquisite cuisine. But shojin ryori is not for everyone.

Each party is assigned their own room. The rooms are all in classical Japanese décor, and normally one sits on tatami. Ours had a rug on the tatami, and a low table with low chairs placed on top of it, presumably to accommodate the gaijin. At first this was quite comfortable but after two hours I was getting sore and antsy (given the mismatch between my frame and the size and shape of the chairs and table). We took the big dinner course, consisting of 11 items. I lack the vocabulary to describe most of the food but there were various sansai (mountain vegetables), sashimi, tempura, various tofu items, a potato potage, rice and miso, and desert (sherbet and fruit compot). Everything vegan. It was exquisite, sophisticated, of the highest quality. Many of the items obviously require a great deal of preparation by an experienced and sophisticated kitchen. At 10,000 yen per person this was a steal. It wasn’t so much any particular item that delighted us but rather the way everything works together, much like in a symphony. We had beer and sake with our food, and tea of course.

This was one of the best dinners I’ve had in Japan, vegan or otherwise. Still, it’s shojin ryori which means that it’s not for everyone. Either you have already acquired a thorough appreciation of Japanese flavors and nuances, or you are the sort who can instantly appreciate any cuisine at the top of its game anywhere in the world. Otherwise, this may be a mixed bag for you. I am the former type, having lived in Japan for 17 years now. I doubt I would have appreciated this when I first set foot on these shores. And I am pretty sure that this will not work for most kids.

Apparently they get quite a few gaijin guests and can take phone calls for reservations in English. Most days one must be there before 19:00 and Sundays before 18:00 in order to be served the 11-item course. Reservation required.

Pros: Beautiful ambience, Perfect food

Cons: Seating slightly uncomfortable, Shojin ryori not for everyone
