I had a vegan muffuletta here (one of their few vegan items). Much like po’boys and gumbo, a muffuletta is a standard NOLA dish, and *very* filling. I like the muffuletta sandwich I had here, even if I was not quite bowled over. Still, it was really nice to have a chance to sample this NOLA staple in vegan form.
This was the easiest vegan option in the market and I tried it based on these reviews since there isn’t a description of it and the staff was busy. You can only order a half (quarters aren’t an option) but I finished it all! This has avocado, tomatoes, greens, olives, capers, creamy hummus, and some crumbled vegan cheese. Came out quickly and left me feeling surprisingly full.
You cannot leave Nola without trying this amazing sandwich!
My companions are not vegan and they said the non vegan muffuletta was really good! They also swear by the asiago roast beef and tuna salad.
Oh boy! Vegan & vegetarian muffulettas that rock! - Edit
What a wonderful, unexpected, happy discovery! I was visiting NOLA for 11 days. I’d been looking for a good quality vegan or vegetarian muffuletta. I finally found it here! Their own excellent olive salad, greens, the perfect bread (same as at Central Grocery), and delicious. Vegetarian adds cheese; vegan adds hummus. Great mix of flavors and textures. This is a mom & pop shop. Juan is the cook. Antonia handles the counter service. She was friendly, efficient, and anticipated my needs. Also, my half muffuletta was too much to eat all at once (and I'm a big eater) so Antonia boxed up the other part for me to take away.
I've eaten veg muffulettas at four other places in NOLA that I found by Googling "vegetarian muffuletta New Orleans" and "vegan muffuletta New Orleans." The ones I had before today were in French Quarter restaurants with prices to match. Each was okay but not good. I could eat them but I didn't really want to. Variously, they had dry bread; the wrong kind of bread; bland, unpleasant olive salad; too much oil; or were just "off "
A couple was sharing a grilled cheese sandwich and making happy sounds while eating. Another customer was eating some kind of sandwich and said "This is so awesome!"
