Discovering new flavour - Edit
As a fan of Chinese cuisine, I was happy to find Cantonese flavour with a vegan touch. We had their vegan course.
Read moreTheir signature dish, a double boiled mushroom soup, is worth trying while figuring out which mushroom is which one.
Their soy meat has a good munchy texture, pleasant, to say the least, with the sauces.
Talking about the sauces, the dishes are classic (Cantonese veggies, sweet sour dish, noddle in tantan-men like) but with a welcomed twist that elevated each dish.
We had their seasonal tea, a lychee rose based one, which was delicately delicious.
Pros: Full vegan course, Awesome tea selection
Cons: Pricey

Could be better - Edit
We ordered the Green Swallow course. Some of the dishes were good, but others were lackluster. For the price, I would have expected better. However, the service was great.

Bingo! - Edit
Being a management consultant, I frequently take clients for lunch. As a vegan in Tokyo I have a lot of trouble with this. Really not easy, and the Marunouchi area is one of the hardest areas in Tokyo to square this circle in. My only option so far has been the Palace Hotel's restaurant "Wadakura" where I can get vegan tempura (really outstanding, btw) if I call ahead. Well, this place here - "en" - serves a "vegetarian" lunch that hits the spot. Given the price, one might expect this anyway, but you never know until you try. This is an upscale restaurant with an elegant, intimate atmosphere, spacious interior, well-spaced tables, comfortable seating and impeccable service. They clearly and blatantly target the well-to-do, health-obsessed housewife crowd that have not a worry in the world other than spending money. They make up 75% of the patrons here at lunch time and the menu accordingly offers a vegetarian lunch at 3,400 yen (first option on the menu) and a "health" lunch at 3,800 for those who can't do without animal corpse parts. More expensive options available. The vegetarian lunch is really a vegan lunch and it was outstanding. Consists of six or seven courses, each one of them worth pausing for and appreciating. The "carrot pie" appetizer was sublime, the mabo-dofu one of the best I've ever had (they used fake meat that was indistinguishable from the animal flesh variety), the sweet tofu with sweet bean dessert a becoming finale. Highly recommend this place. Just one thing: you need at least 90 minutes to make it through all seven dishes so this may not work for everyone.
Read moreNote the Four Stars instead of Five Stars simply because Happy Cow does not allow 5 stars for restaurants that aren't 100% veg. Can't say I agree with this policy but there you have it.
Pros: Very high quality food, Pleasant ambience, good service, Location directly at Tokyo Station
Cons: Not for budget travellers

A perfect ten - Edit
Based on the review by "curiosity3" we went to the "Ken Takase" Cantonese restaurant. After eating here, I can only agree with "curiosity3". This is a wonderful restaurant!
Read moreIt starts with the rather exclusive location: the basement floor of Tokyo Station and the Tokyo Hotel. The restaurant has a warm, welcoming atmosphere which sets the mood for the dining experience. Don't think of this as a quick bite to eat, it is a lengthy seven course dinner.
The menu lists the "green menu" and several individual vegetarian dishes. For some reason one is only allowed to order smaller dishes after 8 pm. Since we arrived at 6 pm, we went for the "green menu". This vegetarian option contains many seasonal vegetables, so your dinner may look a bit different from mine.
The "plate of seasonal vegetables" was a true delight. Small pieces of vegetable were cooked and flavoured to perfection. The soup served next contains a dozen different mushrooms. Before eating, the chef personally shows all the (dried) mushrooms on a beautifully laid out plate and explains how they will benefit your health. What a delight!
Next is a small dish with fake meat, fake shrimp and fake fish which tasted wonderfully (but never haven eaten the real thing, I cannot say if they resemble the taste of actual dead animal). The "mabo tofu" differs from what you get in cheaper restaurants, but Kan Takase's take on mabo tofu is just wonderful. After that, fried brown rice is served which again has been spiced to perfection.
Even dessert was a true delight, although we were so stuffed that it was almost a curtesy to the chef to finish the last serving. Do keep in mind that the whole dinner takes about 2 hours and you'll leave the restaurant both stuffed and poor (the "green menu" costs 6,400 yen per person excluding taxes). We enjoyed every minute, every bite and it was therefore worth every yen.
Pros: tasty food, wonderful atmosphere, great service
Cons: not exactly cheap (but worth it)
