Great dinner - Edit
The $65 five course meal was excellent but you need to have two people with you order that to get that deal. Worth the money and you won't leave hungry

Best restaurant experience ever - Edit
Came here during our vacation in Vancouver from DC. Did the omakase with sake. Everything was exquisite. So worth it.

Tasting - Edit
Great service. All of the servers describe what they are presenting to you. Presentation of the food is wonderful. The food itself was definitely not the best meal ever like another reviewer said but it was good. The eggplant and the soy protein dishes were the best. Everything else was kind of underwhelming tastewise.

Amazing omakase experience - Edit
We did the omakase and it was a highlight of our trip to Vancouver. The service and food were both exceptional. The sake pairing is highly recommended.

Culinary Gem - Edit
We had a wonderful experience at COFU Chinatown. From the moment we entered the restaurant and were graciously welcomed I knew we had chosen a good spot. The interior is minimalist, warm dark colors and cozy. We ordered drinks, both alcoholic and non-alcoholic. All we delicious, but the NA plum wine was a favorite.

Everything was made with meticulous attention to taste, texture, presentation with and emphasis on seasonality. I do not care for eggplant, but the layered eggplant dish was my fave. Deserts were a matcha pudding with house made red bean paste and soy milk balls. Again, flavor and textures. Wonderful place we highly recommend.

My first omakase! - Edit
Getting to experience omakase for the first time was an incredible treat. Watching Chef/owner Akiko work was fascinating, the counter was always very clean and empty and she would just magically make edible art appear before us! The staff were wonderful and it was fun learning from them and chatting with them about the food. This 2 hour event mixed classic Japanese expectations with novel fusion creations. Everything was delicious and changes with the seasons.

Getting better :) - Edit
I’m glad I went back because the first time I dined at Cofu Chinatown was not great. They’re improving!
Read moreFirst time: hardly any lights so no one could read their menu, wait staff seemed untrained and sadly came across as either looming or alternately; unwelcoming, they didn’t have any pressed sushi and weren’t going to make more, share plates not enough food to share.
Second time months later: more lighting and I could read my menu, staff was experienced, had pressed sushi, share plates still too little food to actually share.
So I think I’m getting the vibe of the restaurant finally. It’s nothing like the original Granville Island Cofu, first of all. And that spot is definitely better - has a full sober bar, fewer menu options but everything is made to order fresh and delicious and is quite a bit more affordable.
Chinatown spot is far more expensive, did away with most sober drinks in favor of alcoholic bar, is in a far worse neighborhood which I would certainly not take my family to if they were visiting from out of town (my first visit to Cofu Chinatown there was a large, addicted man screaming physical threats standing IN the doorway - not a welcoming or safe feeling entering the establishment as a single woman), the menu in Chinatown is yummy and unique and the dining room vibe is posh, though nearly empty both times I visited.
Overall, I like Cofu Chinatown’s food and decor! But it’s far too expensive for the neighborhood and portion sizes. It could be billed as a fine dinging establishment but not in its current location. No one wants to dress up and step in human excrement in front of a “fancy” restaurant. Best to go small if located in Chinatown and charge far less.

BEST dinner ever? - Edit
My wife and I debated whether this was the best dinner we had ever had, or had had in a very long time. Either way COFU was worth every moment. The food was incredible, so flavourful and different. They had tons of options and not one thing disappointed. Our favourite was anything the braised ‘rib’ featured, and we really enjoyed a curated flight of sake too. Aside from the food, we tried a lot, the staff in atmosphere put it over the top. The service was attentive, kind, helpful and fast. The restaurant itself was so nice inside, magazine worthy. Thank you to Kungfu for making our anniversary so special. We will be back!.

Delicious and flavoursome experience - Edit
A special Japanese experience, we went for the à la carte options using their bento boxes to try their full range of appetisers (all except the quiche) and the tofu pouch sushi. The waiter was super friendly and helped guide us on how much to order and what they recommend. We got two pine boxes and a bamboo box, in addition to the assorted veggie skewers. The tofu pouch sushi were amazing and we tried all five options - each very special! Each option on the a la carte menu was delicious and had such unique flavours. We did try the sake flight, a new one for us and they were again very special and held so many notes - highly recommended!
