Affordable, calming atmosphere, and good food - Edit
I came to this place at random and I will definitely becoming back again. I tried their $10 lunch platter and was shocked at how much food I got. I was so full and happy.
This was a rare find if you don't live in the neighborhood. Tried it once and it was fantastic. Service was awesome. Serene atmosphere. Will definitely come back and recommend it to all.
I haven't been here in several years, but I forgot to do a review back then. Because of who runs this place, I can't imagine that it's changed. This place is quite different from most restaurants. It doesn't feel like a restaurant, because it's in a neighborhood that's more residential than commercial, and because it's run by Krishnas. It's very peaceful, quiet and relaxed. The food is excellent and may vary from day to day. The workers are very polite, friendly and helpful. It's not all vegan, but there are plenty of very tasty vegan choices.
Considering that this place is in the Hare Krishna temple it should be a vegan kitchen as opposed to vegetarian. Dairy is an extremely cruel industry responsible for unbearable suffering torture and pain. The food is way too salty and everything is quite oily. Sure the cooks have traditional methods and customs but I believe that we as humans can do better than what we have always done. I would recommend this place if you are not terribly health conscious because it is tasty and it is a peaceful atmosphere. But if you care about the high salt and oil content of the food you might as well skip this place. This place would be a winner if they would cut the dairy, oil and salt. If you like consuming those things then you'll like this place but I am sharing my personal opinion so that you can be informed before choosing to go to Govinda's.
Govinda's dinning room is stunning and very welcoming. The diners are always diverse. The food is fresh, tasty yet not laden with grease and is not over spiced. The attendants are very friendly and attentive. It is welcoming to families, singles or couples. On my top 10 list of best veg food in Toronto.
Food is more than just the material ingredients that go into it. So an angry chef can make people angry. This restaurant totally gets it. Lovingly prepared food, not too spicy, not too heavy, just right. Not too many people yet, but quite a variety and eat-all-you-can for a low price. Totally friendly and easy-going place, housed in a heritage building too. Very interesting.
