Sooo Good! - Edit
I have been to Great Sage many times and every time I am pleased with what I order! The food is delicious! I love going to a restaurant that is 100% vegan so I don't have to worry about substitutions or leaving items off and can just enjoy my meal. The service is excellent and the atmosphere is nice. There is a market right next store that sells many vegan items so it's the perfect place to spend an afternoon. :) If only I lived closer I would come here even more!!

left feeling VERY full!! - Edit
I have always had a mini love affair with Great Sage. The last time I was here I had the Gobi and my boyfriend had the crab cake. I was seriously so full I had to get up and move! We sat outside on like a Tuesday and it was such a fun atmosphere. Our waitresses were super helpful when we couldn't figure out what exactly to order! Will definitely be back to try something different.

Always a great choice for breakfast, lunch, or dinner - Edit
Great Sage is part of the Conscious Corner shopping center in Columbia, Maryland with Nest, Bark, and Roots Market. Make some time before or after your meal to check out these shops. Roots has a great selection of vegan groceries as well as an excellent hot bar, and Nest has gorgeous local pottery for sale. Head into Bark to get supplies for your furry friends. Great Sage is a sit-down casual dining restaurant that changes their menu seasonally. They offer both indoor and outdoor seating as well as a bar. I have had many a delicious meal at Great Sage, but the highlights include the spinach artichoke dip, the pistachio panzanella salad, and the adult mac and cheese. You really can’t go wrong with anything on the menu so make sure to come hungry and definitely leave room for dessert! The breakfast menu is equally as enticing. This is a great location for dates or small get togethers with friends. The menu is full of classic combinations done right.

Delicious, innovative vegan food. Friendly, knowledgeable staff. Pet friendly patio as well, very accommodating to your pups. We sampled 6 different brunch items. I visited with 2 omnis and they both raved about the food. Seriously good! Highly recommend!

Absolutely delicious every time! - Edit
My parents are SOS free vegans and this is their favorite spot! They are a little less strict in their SOS ways when eating out, but at Great Sage, at least their vegan concerns aren't a concern! They love it and have introduced many friends (and clearly family) into the fold. Even my Dad's 60th surprise birthday party was held here!
Read moreThe food is always spot-on. From brunch to lunch to dinner, everything is made with fresh and delightful ingredients. The standbys are always tasty with little variation and the specials are always that: special. I've eaten here more times than I can count and can honestly say that I've never had a disappointing meal. Brunch is probably my favorite, though.
I've had various waitstaff from vegan to omnivore, but they are knowledgeable about the dishes and how they are prepared. The bar is small and cramped and the restaurant could definitely use an expansion and would definitely benefit from outdoor seating, but overall the atmosphere is nice. It does get loud in the evenings on weekends, but occasionally there is live music which can be quite fun.
I'm currently living in China and I miss weekend meals with my parents! It's always worth trying new things at Great Sage!
Pros: Great specials, Depth and dependability of flavor, Knowledgeable staff
Cons: Loud, Limited SOS free options

They must have expanded since you were last at Great Sage--they definitely have outdoor seating! It does get pretty loud inside when it's busy, though.

Pricey but usually excellent food - Edit
I've been to Great Sage probably a couple of dozen times. I would classify it as Vegan fusion. I usually order an appetizer such as the spinach and artichoke dip, which is divine. I have also had the cauliflower bites and the polenta sticks and dip, and both are fabulous.
Read moreI used to always order the same dish - the lentil burger - and a hot chocolate with soy whip. But they have a new burger on their menu that I haven't tried. However, the tempeh reuben is also to die for. The only dish I've truly disliked was the Sweet Potato Chickun and Biscuits.
Great Sage's only real downfall is that the two of us can't afford to eat there often. We rarely seem to leave spending less than $50, so it is almost always special occasion food. They do use quality ingredients though so I don't doubt you get your money's worth, but it's still out of our budget to go more than a few times a year.
Pros: emphasis on local ingredients, they fundraise for animal rights orgs, relaxed atmosphere
Cons: poor lighting in the back, sometimes loud

Favorite Place! - Edit
It's so exciting to find a place that you can order anything off the menu! Everything is always very fresh and the staff is very friendly about allergies or other food issues. (There always seem to be choices for anyone who is gluten free, nut free, soy free, etc as well.) My current favorites are the Pierogie Quesadilla and the Caesar Salad. The vegan lattes and smoothies are great too!

Wow. I asked the waiter for a recommendation between 2 dishes I was considering. He emphatically recommended the Adult Mac n Cheese. I loved it!!! OMG, best taste and so filling, I shared it with my friend. Rich, cheesy flavor but with no dairy. AMAZED.

Best thing ever - Edit
We got hot chocolate which was delicious, a cinnamon roll with realistic cream cheese icing, a crumb muffin which was good, Cesar salad which was super good, chocolate lava cake which was so rich and moist, spinach artichoke dip that was nice, peanut butter cheesecake that had really good peanut brittle but the dark chocolate was bitter of course but if you like that it's fine, adult mac and cheese which was the best thing ever I definitely recommend it, cornbread that was delicious and lastly upside down apple cake which was a little dry but it tasted amazing.

Big fan - Edit
I moved to Maryland a couple of years ago and was thrilled to find a vegan restaurant so close to my new home! I've been several times now and am always happy with my food. I'm kind of difficult to please but they have always been accommodating, taking out whatever it is I don't want in the meal. (My mom did ask for a breakfast sandwich without the mock sausage and they were unable to do that for her, so they're not perfect.)
Read moreI like that they always have an option of soy, almond, or coconut milk for your drinks.
They also seem to change up their menu with the seasons. I can't wait to go back and try their peanut butter cheesecake for fall!
Really, the only problem with Great Sage is that the food is so good, I've always been too full to have more than a taste of their amazing-sounding desserts. I need to be more careful next time!

Definitely worth the drive from anywhere in the greater DC area! - Edit
2016 update - After my original review, my husband and I returned to Great Sage for brunch many times. For months after he died in an accident last year, I didn't return. But then came my birthday on July 16, and I knew I wanted to do something special. Great Sage was so amazing about helping set that up for me! I brought a dozen friends, mostly omnivores, and everyone was impressed by all the dishes - with the Avocado Benedict being a particular favorite. Great Sage was also great about working with me to make my special birthday group lunch into a fundraiser for Poplar Spring Animal Sanctuary in memory of my husband.
Read moreMy original 2012 review - My husband and I heard about Great Sage some time back, but delayed going there because it is a fairly long drive from where we live in Arlington VA. However, once we made our first trip for Sunday brunch, we decided it was definitely worth making it a regular routine - especially for the monthly benefit events for different animal advocacy organizations. We've had quite a few dishes, and all are excellent. The service and decor are great too ... and we love that fact that it's part of Conscious Corner, with a great grocer, gift shop, and pet food place in the same mall!

I have gone to the Great Sage a number of times expecting to have great food. Hasn't happened. I am a foodie and I am a really good cook. It just seems to me as if the person deciding on the menu isn't someone who loves great food. The food is beautiful and the staff is fabulous, but the food is not great. It's OK. We have decided that we will not be going back here because we have consistently been disappointed by the food.

A Must-Try Vegan Restaurant - Edit
If you're in the Columbia, Maryland area and are vegan (or would consider vegan options), Great Sage is a place worth checking out. They serve in-season specialties, using organic food sources wherever possible. I especially enjoy their hearty vegan burgers, this is good if you're looking for something more filling to eat. Their macaroni and cheese also has a delicious creamy taste. The menu also offers wine pairings if you're looking to enjoy a drink with your meal. Trying gluten free? Most of Great Sage's dishes offer gluten-free alternatives as well.

My favorite restaurant in southern MD :) - Edit
Great sage is probably the best casual vegan restaurant in the DC area. They change their menu relatively frequently, so I always find I'm trying new dishes when I visit. The ingredients are fresh, and their food is wonderfully flavorful.
Read moreI always end up getting more food than I really need because I always want a smoothie/shake, an appetizer, an entree ... and obviously dessert. They also have delicious coffee if you need a pick-me-up. This visit I ordered:
1) their pineapple/kale/ginger smoothie
2) the buffalo bites: fried cauliflower, buffalo style, with chive ranch sauce. These taste AMAZING but sometimes can get a bit soggy.
3) a "goat cheese"/avocado/pesto grilled cheese sandwich w/tomato soup. DELICIOUS but a bit messy because the cheese/avo/pesto combo tended to squirt out of the sandwich with most bites haha
4) a "sin tres leches" cake which is THE BEST dessert I've had in a while. It's less wet than non-vegan tres leches cake is, but that doesn't make it any less good. The strawberry sauce on top was a wonderful addition.
Can't wait to come back :)

Number 1 in Maryland - Edit
What can I say, Great Sage is the top vegan restaurant in all of Maryland, D.C. and Northern Virginia. The problem is that it’s not close to anything and requires lengthy drive times to Clarksville. The Samosa Salad and Cauliflower wings are my top two choices. The kids like the chicken salad sandwich (it was yummy) and the vegan pizza which we order with steamed broccoli. The potato salad is good as well. Also on deck are BBQ tofu sandwiches, greens, bean soup, chicken salad wraps, smoothies, pressed juices, pies and weekend brunch. Special guest frequently grace Great Sage with speaking opportunities for plant head fans and live music goes down on various days of the week. But don't forget, they are closed on Monday! Moreover, Great Sage is next door to Roots Organic market where we shop at weekly.

Great It's Vegan, otherwise - Edit
We both enjoyed our lunch there (vegan and omnivore in group), but not impressed with menu items. My impression is a place where omnivores who want to feel good about their diet by having a token vegan (eco-green, etc.) meal (that has too, too many calories, etc.). Noisy, cafe-style (nothing special about decor, OK service, etc.) This is the type of place I really, really want to see the nutritional values of menu items. Yes. I would go there again when in the area.
