The Kiva is an awesome natural food store. They have a great bulk section. Heaps of fresh organic produce. The staff here is friendly.
I absolutely love that they have a smart eclectic selection of books from western to eastern herbs to cookbooks including vegan cookbooks and more.
Where The Kiva shines above even Sundance aka my favorite natural food store in Eugene and maybe on the planet is that The Kiva makes made to order sandwiches that are fresh as you can imagine packed with heaps of vegetables.
Sundance used to have amazing sandwiches yet this past trip to Eugene found Sundance's sandwiches underwhelming aka the bread was dry and wasn't fresh.
Pro tip: Get the stellar salad bar and hot bar at Sundance while getting the made to order sandwich at The Kiva
I am deducting one star for there is no place to eat your sandwich at The Kiva for they used to have tables out front to enjoy your sandwich when I last lived in Eugene so you have to take your sandwich to go.
Lastly for my sandwich and the drill here is you can make your own sandwich by choosing bread. I chose tempeh hummus and heaps of veggies etc. Sandwich is an A+
They had a whole vegan shelf which was nice. It’s a health food store so they did also have a bunch of vegan options around. It was pretty expensive but it was a cute little local grocery store so I would come again.
When I walked in for the first time one of the staff gave me a short “speech” on how they are sustainable / local yada yada however the first thing I saw is a buttload of animal products, everywhere, which is obviously not sustainable and instead of them having a single vegan yogurt they have the more commercial dairy yogurts you find in Walmart etc.... would not recommend.
you are right on point. this is every single time i have been there which is way too much. its my local neighborhood store and the staff always treats me with disdain. maybe i dont have the right "look" because i constantly see customers ahead of me get treated with actual respect
It's really convenient, if you're stuck downtown for a long stretch. Some of the bulk foods are handy. They have a more extensive bulk foods section than Whole Foods; but otherwise, at Whole Foods I haven't experienced rudeness from an employee like I experienced today at Kiva.
Kiva is a little and popular grocery store in downtown Eugene. They offer simple grocery items, but what I like best is their rows of dispensers for spices, grains, nuts, etc. They also have a really nice deli in the back that's good for lunch stops. Both times I've been in, they've had tofu and other vegan options available. The vegan items are marked, but when I asked, the woman told me of even more items that were suitable for vegans. All of the premade lunch items had their ingredients listed on the back of their description cards, which was very helpful. The store is a little more pricey, but as to be expected for a small market.
I go there for the deli stuff mostly, but when a store has jars of spaghetti sauce for 8 bucks and they are overly picky about what they sell it's pushing it.

The whole store smells like meat, dirty. The store just has an overall dirty feel as well and unfortunately, in case you didn't know, smells permeate everything even metal and especially plastic. I just won't buy anything from a store that smells like dead rotting flesh, I'm sorry.
I know many folks in Eugene swear by Kiva, in fact, when Whole Foods tried to move in town, many said oh no, poor Kiva and they never did. But the Kiva is an odd little place, imo. They have a ton of meat, the place smells like a meat market to me, and the produce seems off to the side. I don't get it, but I don't have to. I would only go there if I went downtown and needed a drink.
