A place where there are live animals in small containers and in the aquarium, can not be considered vegan. We escaped.

Pricey but lovely - Edit
At the time of writing this review the location is not where it says on the map. You in fact have to walk down Beitaipingzhuang rd from Mudanyuan metro station until the next big intersection and then take a left down N 3rd Ring Road Middle. The restaurant is on the right of this road about 2 mins walk down. It is just before Shuangxiu Park.
Read moreThe restaurant is part of a teahouse/Buddhist temple and has a beautiful interior with a water fountain and traditional Chinese decor.
The staff did not speak much English but they helped us connect to the WiFi and then we used a translator app to communicate. I would recommend having one downloaded if you don’t speak any Chinese.
We were directed to a private booth. You select a tea and also ask for some food.
There is a set price for the whole experience which included unlimited tea, plus they brought nibbles of nuts and fruit which I think were unlimited too as they kept replacing the fruit each time we finished.
They also brought a meal for each of us. One was udon noodles and cucumber with hoisin sauce and the other was steamed rice with tofu, mushrooms and greens with a spicy broth on the side. Both came with lotus root in sesame oil and some pickled root vegetable. The food was very delicious.
The cost was 258rmb per person (a little under £30). The price seemed to be dependent on the tea you chose and this seemed to be a mid range one - some closer to 300rmb and some 200rmb for the whole meal. This seemed reasonable for the lovely setting and unlimited tea and snacks. It is the sort of place you go for several hours to relax and enjoy the experience slowly. I would recommend if you are looking for something a little more special to do in Beijing.
Since it is part of a Buddhist temple the food is ‘Buddhist vegetarian’ which usually means vegan, however one of the fruit platters had strawberries with cream and a sponge cake. The main meal had no eggs or dairy in but if you wish to stick strictly to a vegan diet then maybe try and check with the staff beforehand.
Pros: Beautiful and relaxing setting , Unlimited tea and snacks , Delicious food
Cons: Expensive , Staff spoke no English

Beautiful vegan teahouse / restaurant - Edit
Walking into Louyuxuan Teahouse is like entering another world. The decor is old Chinese, with the inevitable modern LEDs sprinkled around.
Read moreThe friendly staff show you to your own booth, also beautifully appointed.
The menu is fixed each night. It comes with really nice tea, seeds and nuts for appetizer, and a set meal (all vegan). It cost 158 RMB (about $23). Not cheap, but worth the splurge.
I super enjoyed my night at Louyuxuan Teahouse!
It's a short walk from Mudanyuan subway station (line 10).
