Serves meat, vegan options available. Located close to tourist spot of Shijo Dori. Buffet style using many raw vegetables from its own garden in Kyoto. Menu has changed over time, and as of Feb 2016, there are less veg/vegan choices then before. Nonetheless you will find around 5 marked veg items, 2 types of noodles (that you can eat without broth), hot bread, hot potatoes, and the salad bar which offers around 15 or so veggies. Open Mon-Sun 10:30am-10:00pm.

Only salad - Edit
Actually there are no warm vegan options except for plain rice. There is a good salad bar with 2 vegan dressings but thats it. No soup, no tofu, everything at least contains fish.

Buffet with lots of options - Edit
I understand from previous reviews below that there used to be more vegan options at this restaurant. But I've been twice in the past week, and have been more than happy. Flat rate for all you can eat and/or drink. I had heaps of fresh vegetables, some salads (including one with tofu), and upon noodles. All dishes and sauces clearly labeled with allergen / dietary restrictions. Probably best for lunch, an opportunity for a vegetable reload!

Not what it used to be - Edit
I've been coming here for many years, though not the past three (COVID). I paid for the all-you-can-eat lunch with drink, ¥1530. I could have had jicama, some spinach, and bean sprouts. No vegan dressings, unless the miso was mislabeled. There were some nice-looking udon noodles that mysteriously had fish. I appreciate that everything was labelled with respect to contents, but I ultimately walked out on my prepaid meal having eaten and drunk nothing. Nothing.

Not good for vegans - Edit
It's not a bad restaurant, just has limited choice for vegans.
Read moreI went there twice, 2 years apart and got disappointed twice. There was not a single vegan hot dish and the labels indicate fish, meat, milk but not egg.
If you go in a mixed group it might be fine.
Pros: buffet style (lunch: 1000 yen), nice atmosphere
Cons: Almost no options but raw veggies

Japanese buffet in Kyoto - Edit
Went there on Saturday morning.
Read moreYou have to get the ticket required to have breakfast there. The tickets were sold out by 8:30AM on that day. Once the limit is reached, there’d be no longer breakfast buffet available.
If you are interested in this breakfast buffet, I recommend you go there an hour before the restaurant opens just in case.

3 stars for effort - Edit
I enjoyed that every single item available had a label indicating allergens as well as potential diatary restrictions. The decor and the music were pleasant enough as well.
Read moreHowever...
I ended up having a bowl of plain udon with miso soup and three portions of bean sprouts, fried onion and seaweed combo. There were no ready or hot dishes suitable for vegans. Perhaps there were some during the day and by 7pm all run out? The food I did have was fresh and tasty though.
I left rather unsatisfied, seeking further nourishment for soul and body... :(

NOT Vegetarian! - Edit
They have vegetables but they are mostly cooked with meat options like Ham, Chicken, Fish. People who reviewed this as vegetarian are just wrong or ignorant e.g. if you eat Salad all dressings have Sea products. If you are a “real” vegetarian, stay away. If you like to have lot of local produce with Sea food or meat, then this may be for you.

Cons: All dressing have Sea food, Mis-advertised or reviewed as vegetarian place, You have to pay extra for Orange juice

Terrible - Edit
The only veggie options were salad and as another reviewer said - just a lot of leaves and some tomato. You can add some noodles but it’s not worth the cost.

Very tasty but limited - Edit
The food has signs to say if it contains fish, pork, chicken etc which is super helpful. All the food is very fresh and very tasty, but as a vegetarian I only had a few options. There were about 3/4 options I could have outside of the salad bar. The salad bar is almost entirely leaves (or was when I went at 6pm) but has several veggie sauces, and the leaves and tomato were very tasty. They have noodles that you can have cold or heat up, but the optional broth next to them contains dashi. There is rice in a closed metal container, but the curry sauce next to it is not labelled so unsure if this is vegetarian. They also have a fruit salad which is good, and the price for everything is good value. I had my fill and was very satisfied, but if you're ravenous or want to try lots of different foods then this is probably not the right place for you.

A great spot to try some different Japanese food. Around ¥890 for unlimited lunch buffet. Fair few vegan options plus rice and salad. All dishes have ingredients listed through pictures.

Gone downhill - Edit
This place used to be one of my go-to restaurants when dining with non-veg friends as there was always a great selection of vegan and vegetarian food available as well as non-veg dishes, but recently it’s become more of a lottery with fewer veg options than ever. The last time I visited the was nothing I could eat except the salad bar and plain white rice. It a shame as it’s a great concept, but sadly it seems that this is no longer a veg friendly place. There are many other, better, restaurants nearby so I’d skip this one.

Great concept - Edit
We were looking for an early dinner and this place was close by. A great spread but when we looked more closely (after having paid - which you have to do up front as you enter the restaurant) we realised about 80% was not vegan or even vegetarian. We’d read the Happy Cow advice that they’d reduced their options but hadn’t realised that this would basically leave us with the salad bar. There was no hot food on offer that was vegan or vegetarian. So we made do with miso soup and rice. It was a healthy meal but we paid over the odds as a result Y1350 each for salad and soup.

Nothing to write home about - Edit
We came for dinner and while the staff were friendly, they weren't really available with explaining the buffet/ hot meal options. So I t was difficult to figure out which ingredients or options were meant to go together or not. My vegan partner didn't have many hot meal options available and overall, the food wasn't as tasty as the other Japanese restaurants we tried this trip

Buffet - Worth the money - Edit
Went for dinner. You have to pay at machine at the entrance and then all you can eat buffet.
Read moreRelatively spacious restaurant and good quality food.
The vegetarian options were marked in english which was convenient.
They also had a lot of vegetables for salad.
Was surprised when they had only white rice and not brown rice (genmai). They had other fish/meat dishes if you are going along with some one who is not vegetarian.
Location near Shijo-Karasuma.
-1 Because I have eaten better Japanese washoku (set meals) at a couple of other places but then the food was still good. Less cooked food and more of salads
Pros: Location, All you can eat buffet, Decent selection

Delicious, Fresh, Seasonable Veggies - cheap! - Edit
I am so glad I stumbled over this place. Huge selection of local, seasonal organic vegetables. There is a huge selection: (cold) salad bar, steamed vegetables and yams, noodles and design-your-own soups, make your own hot pot, noodle salads and stir-fry dishes....!For the equivalent of €10 when we were there I had a feast of healthily prepared veggies - and finally something other than white rice and pickles!! :-) When we went at 7:00 on a Sunday (!) night it was PACKED with locals - not another tourist in sight. Highly recommended!!
Read moreYou buy your ticket from a vending machine and the buffet is all you can eat. Pretty self explanatory. Ice water is free and drinks cost extra.

Natural veggies from garden - Edit
As a tourist & communication problems. It's hard to find a vegetarian here. Very lucky I found this shop just closed to the tourist spot of Shijo Dori. Look for the Emporio Armani shop & exactly opposite the shop there is a small road. Just walk about 100m in & you may find it. Although they serve meat but very little and majority is vegetables.
Read moreThe price is very cheap for Japanese standard and the food is very tempting and fresh. Cosy environment and friendly service. Highly recommended.
