15 YEARS LATER & SAMPE'S IS STILL ON MY MIND. - Edit
As noted in the title, it must have been at least 15 years since I was last in Peru. The memories certainly aren't as focused as they once were, but I can attest that the food was never less than pleasing. I've visited Peru on numerous occasions, and Sampe's was always my favorite safe stop for a tasty meal at a very reasonable price. The photos are very clearly indicative of the sort of dishes one can expect to find at Sampe's.
Read moreI've seen comments about the quality of the food. Is it likely to merit a Michelin star? Doubtful. But was the food consistently tasty and the Restaurant clean? It was. The portions were always perfectly satisfactory, if not precisely generous. What matter? At the prices they charge, buy more if you desire.
The atmosphere? Delightful. It was always extremely laid back and comfortable. The decor was largely as you see in the current photos. It is a smart looking family restaurant; simple, warm and inviting.
During the time that I was stopping in, Sampe's was NOT VEGAN. It was a flesh free vegetarian restaurant. However, I was always able to find something on the menu to fill my belly. Stop in - it's worth your time.

Pros: The food is consistently flavorful and satisfying., The atmosphere is somewhat subdued and mellow., Centrally located.
Cons: It might be said that the staff is... um, relaxed.

Good food here - Edit
I've been to this restaurant at least 10 times over the years, and found the food to be good. Basic acceptable food, but good. Get there no later than about 1245pm to get a table at lunch time because it gets very crowded with the shoppers from Risso Shopping Center (located across the street). It's also in the same block as another vegetarian restaurant as well. There are several levels here, so go upstairs one or two levels if the ground floor tables are taken. They follow the general pattern of the set meal of the day that you find in Peru: a drink, an appetizer/salad, and the main plate with a few different items. Today, the meal included a fruit drink, a bowl of soup, a fruit salad, the main plate with three items and a baked apple for the dessert. Everything is in Spanish, but if needed you can always point to what someone else is eating at another table. The lunch costs 13 Soles as of June 2023. Many times, the food is heavy on carbs and light on protein. Service has gotten very slow here over the years... Today I waited over 10 minutes just to order. And, the waitress asked me to pay upon ordering (not after eating, as it used to be).

Sampe's for lunch - Edit
Sampe's is a spacious informal eatery where you'll get a set menu for very inexpensive 8 soles. Usually locals who work nearby would spend their lunch break there, in the evening the place becomes quieter. Staff is friendly and helpful but you shouldn't expect anyone to understand English.
Read moreThe food there was OK, surely nothing special, but fairly healthy dishes to appease your hunger. The two times I was there the food was served almost cold though (admittedly it was way after peak time in the evening).
Nonetheless I liked Sampe's more than the other vegetarian restaurant close beside it on the same street.
Pros: fair food, very inexpensive
Cons: nothing unduly appealing
