Great dumplings

Boiled dumplings with peanut butter and chilli oil were delicious, one of the best I've had.

Disappointing

Did not enjoy the vegetarian dumplings at all, had a very bitter aftertaste.

Handmade dumplings

Shanghai Street is a Chinese restaurant chain with several branches located in Melbourne's Chinatown. Their menu includes a couple of vegan-friendly dumplings and vegetable side dishes. Vegan options are marked with a "V". It may be advisable to confirm the vegan options when ordering, just in case.

We tried three out of the four kinds of vegan dumplings. All dumplings were hand-made and were either cooked, steamed or fried. Taste overall was okay. The dumplings in chili oil and peanut sesame butter sauce were my favorite!

I just wished the vegetable fillings were more diverse, because the filling of jiaozi and baozi was very similar. (No idea what the filling in the xiaolongbao is - they were sold out on the day we visited.)

With less than 16$ for a full dish of dumplings, prices here are comparably low. Service was minimal but okay.

This branch is located in a rather quiet street. The interior is simple and holds many people. It is a popular chain and you may see queues of people waiting here or at other branches in the neighbourhood.

Pros: taste good / ok, fair prices

Cons: vegan dumpling filling could be more diverse
