Two Different Conversations

An impromptu night away gave me yet another chance to indulge in what is fast becoming a new favourite pastime of mine: double-dipping into restaurants for multiple services.
My first foray into what this warm and inviting restaurant had to offer came at nightfall. Having been made to feel truly welcomed by the incredible staff, I set my sights firmly on the spread in the hopes that it could maintain the positive vibes.
Almost immediately, I knew I had nothing to fear with regard to the feel-good factor ebbing away as nestled among the impressive selection of cold options were two of my personal favourites: roasted cauliflower with tahini and freekeh. Both were exceptional, but they weren’t the only shining stars of this often maligned section, as the bean sprout slaw was an unexpected revelation.
Despite there being ample, admirable dishes to choose from, the management still saw fit to ply me with a little something extra. Why, it was a substantial plate of spätzle and schnitzel, of course! While the latter was great, the former was exquisite.
A special mention too has to go to the fries. Though not normally something I would deem worthy of individual adulation, here they were so sublime that it would have been rude not to give them their own moment in the sun.
Given how much I enjoyed the dinner offering, expectations for breakfast were high. Unfortunately, where the evening service gave with one hand, the morning took with the other.
This isn’t to say that there was a dip in the standard; what I could have had was more than the equal of the night before, the Mediterranean freekeh being the standout. The issue lay with the fact that nearly everything – even the baked beans, for reasons that are beyond my ken – contained dairy. The chef was apologetic and tried their best to placate me with some lactose-free variations, but it just wasn’t the experience I had anticipated.
To say that the two sittings were Jekyll and Hyde in nature might be a touch extreme, as both still had their merits, just one considerably more than the other.
