Excellent cozy vegan place in chennai - Edit
Viridian plate
Read moreWanted to come here for a while. Took around 30 minutes from the place I was staying at near KK Nagar.
This is one of the few vegan only places in Chennai and as someone who follows a plant only diet I value such places.
I messaged via Whatsapp before and the owner Shankar was kind enough to let me know that the place was open and that I can drop by.
The street is pretty narrow (you can see via google street view) where the restaurant is located but small cars can probably park there. Luckily the roads weren't water logged here during the rains when I came by.
My family and I were greeted by Lakshmi in the restaurant. The restaurant wasn't crowded at all and we got seats immediately. The ambiance was very homely and we really liked the decor inside.
There are also other goods stored there like vegan sweets and herbal powders for mixed rice and other dishes. There was also a vegan instant coffee mix with oat milk powder. We got some of them to go.
The menu had a lot of items. We got soup, which was souperb (pun intended). Then we got a cutlet banana which was our favorite dish. Would have been nice with a chutney instead of the sauce it came with, which was too vinegary.
The peanut based raita was also delicious. I think personally I would have preferred biriyani without jackfruit but I can see that jackfruit can be a good addition for some folks.
We also had a nice conversation with Shankar. He explained the restaurants origins and about how he and his wife started this around 2018. He is also very active about building a vegan community of folks living in Chennai.
Green earth and blue sky is what I was told by Shankar the name of the restaurant stood for, which i thought was creative and apt.
I would highly recommend anyone especially vegan or similar cruelty free and ethical mindset to check this place out and pay a visit with friends/family.
5/5 in all categories, price, communication, ambiance, hospitality.
Pros: Service and hospitality, Variety of vegan dishes including desserts

The staff were friendly and helpful with tips on where dishes originate from and what they're like. The restaurant had earthy vibe, away from the street hustle. The dishes were delicious... and what a relief to find somewhere wholly vegan.

Fantastic food, fantastic ambiance—but most importantly, amazing service.

The Orange Cake with Chocolate Ganach was genuinely one of the best deserts I've tasted. The Almond Milk Chai is a must have!
The owner Shankar was incredibly kind and welcoming. He not only took the time to chat with us but also gave thoughtful suggestions on what to try. His warmth made the experience feel personal and memorable.

Such a varied menu with so many options for different breads, rice, curries, cakes and ice creams. I had a curry and garlic rice and chilli & cheese roti. Then banana and almond cake. I took a non-vegan i met in Chennai a Biryani and mushroom soup and he didn’t believe it wasn’t vegan.

Very good indeed - Edit
A small place (seats about 16-20 at a time I guess) with an outstanding vegan menu. I am not vegan but the two times I went to The Viridian Plate, I did wish I could turn one.
Read moreThe texture, flavours and the presentation of the various items are all excellent. The owners are hands-on and along with their staff, serve customers themselves. Of the really memorable items i have had, I must mention the peanut-curd rice and the cashew milk coffee. You simply cannot make out that they are not dairy-based!
They had a mock-meat festival recently, but not having participated, I cannot comment on it. They also have a little store that sells vegan food products and other hand-made items of household use.
Definitely worth repeat visits.
Pros: Quiet, cozy ambience., Variety--uniformly tasty--excellent presentation, The owners spend time with customers
Cons: Delay in time to serve-- order all items at once

While visiting Chennai we went to this vegan restaurant 2 consecutive days. We were very impressed with the extensive selection of dishes from different genres. My daughter wanted to eat pasta and my son wanted Chinese noodles. I had stuffed parota with Tofu butter masala (it had been so long tasting it after becoming vegan).

Excellent - Edit
Tried a few things from this restaurant at their stall at the Alwarpet vegan festival. We had the jackfruit biryani with raita, curd rice and chai. All very flavorful and (in my opinion) the peanut curd used is better than dairy based curd. Even my dad, who eats curd rice everyday for at least two meals and was a bit skeptical, loved the vegan curd rice. Definitely recommend.
