This place made us sad

English below👇

Tom Tam is a small restaurant located inside the basement floor of the Lapin department store, just a few minutes from Totsuka station.

There’s not much in the way of ambience. It feels like being in your grandma’s house, if you grandma was Japanese, liked classical music, and lived in a basement. There are books and toys on the shelves, so it’d be a good place to take small kids, I guess.

We were impressed by the multilingual menu, with vegan and vegetarian choices clearly marked. We decided to go for the Vegan Plate, which we’ve found is always a good option when visiting somewhere new. Well, it had been up until that point.

We didn’t realize when we ordered it that it was actually two plates of food. The first plate was okay, with miso soup, rice, and other dishes. It feels a lot like something your Japanese mom might make for you, if you had one.

But the second plate was a huge portion of steamed veggies, with a small portion of salt and miso to flavor them with. This.... was really, really bad. I’m just baffled at how anyone could have thought this was an appetizing dish.

I’m torn here because the ladies who run the place are so sweet and hardworking, and I applaud their efforts to serve food that anyone can eat. But I can’t remember the last time I enjoyed a meal less.

Plentiful veggies

Small restaurant in basement of the building, just across the street from Totsuka Modi, and a two minute walk from the station.
Has several vegan options clearly labelled. Uses tons of fresh veggies. The owners were very nice and helpful. If you dislike any specific vegetables etc they are happy to accommodate.

Pros: Healthy, Fresh, Menu in several different languages

Cons: Preparation takes a long time
