Great vegan options & atmosphere

We always have a great experience here and is a fantastic spot for brunch. Good service and food comes out quickly even when it’s pumping. Lots of vegan options to choose from.

Pros: Lots of vegan options , Fun atmosphere , Good service

Disappointing food & service

Came with high hopes because of all the reviews, but wow, what a let down. The fried chicken burger we got was the only tasty thing, but it was meant to come with a side of beer-battered fries and instead came with stale, overcooked, store-bought (frozen, then cooked) french fries. McDonald's literally has better chips, and that's not a compliment.

The sides we got – 'roasted' mushroom that seemed pan-fried and 'salt and pepper tofu' that was neither salty nor peppery, but instead had a weird smell and came dry and without sauce – were not nice at all.

Ordered an iced coffee and got an iced chocolate; asked for the coffee and instead of apologising for getting it wrong, the waitress kind of huffed and walked off to change it. The service was so cold and borderline rude that we legit felt uncomfortable being there, as though we were in her way.

Thank god we didn't come on a weekend, when you're forced to tip 15%, or a public holiday, when it's 20%. Thinking maybe they should pay their staff adequately, rather than getting customers to fill out their wages...?

Oh, and the music was blaring so loudly we had to almost shout to hear each other, so the vibe was not great.

100% wouldn't return.

Cons: What's on the menu isn't what you get, Most food wasn't tasty, Service was cold and rude

Delicious food with heaps of options

Anything in the menu can be made vegan. The mushroom porridge congee was so good! Staff are lovely, can’t wait to go back and try more of the menu including their dinner menu.

Pretty good!

I had the vegan Kale ‘em All, which was good but expensive for the size and verrrry garlicky, but in hindsight I would have chosen the porridge goblin.

Pros: Many vegan options/modifications available, Nice staff, Great vibe/theme

Cons: Kale ‘em all was too pricey for the amount.

coool

I'm writing this review having just finished my brunch because the atmos and the aircon are just sooo coool at True North that I don't wanna leave. The interior is a mix of Art Deco fixtures, big stained wooden booths, kooky vintage nick nacks and framed paintings along side trad tattoo flash and graphic art. There's a touch Mexicana kitsch with hot sauce bottles lined up along the bar. Staff are friendly and well dressed to match the cafe's aesthetic.

I've had coffee and sweet stuff here often. Coffee is usually good and the passionfruit yoyo is the most memorable of the vegan sweets for me. Today is the first time I've made it at meal time. The breakfast and lunch menu lists a vegan option for plenty of items. Thing is, the vegan "option" I went for barely resembled the omni breakfast roll it was based on, which has egg, bubble and squeak pattie, and bacon. The vegan breakfast roll had smokey eggplant, advocado, vegan cheese, spinach leaves, tomato relish and it was so [censored] delicious that it deserves it's own listing on the menu. The roll is deliciously soft, bubbly, and chewy. The eggplant is silky and tender and the smoky flavour is perfection. They're generous with chunks of perfectly creamy avocado. Winner! I'm looking forward to trying more.

As of mid-2018 they have a new, separate vegan/vegetarian menu and it looks goood! Can’t wait to try it. All dishes on this menu are vegan with the option of adding eggs to a couple. Scrambled eggs available as a side.

Great vegan options

Has a separate vegan menu during the day. The evening menu is entirely vegan.
So many options and everything I've tried has been amazing.
The cafe has always been very busy when we've gone during the day. We went for dinner this week and were the only ones there.

Pros: lots of vegan options, friendly staff, good atmosphere

Cons: can be very busy/ have to wait to get a seat

Vegan? No problems.

With plenty of options on the menu that can be done vegan, the most difficult question to answer is - what to have! I ordered the Huevos rancheros, which was done without the eggs for the vegan option. It was served with a fresh salsa and lime, as well as a cashew type cheese. It was quite tasty and a different option for when you don't want to have bread.
The coffee was really good, as per Melbourne's standards.
Service is good, and the place was packed when we visited on a Saturday morning.
Great cafe for meeting friends, or even dining alone.

Pros: Lots of vegan options, Great central location

Cons: very eggy menu

Best cafe in Melbourne

Heaps of vegan options - best of the bunch are the reuben, the breakfast roll and the hot cakes. The sweets are incredible, best muffins I've ever had, and there's always a new cake on offer. Coffee is so good, plus they do unlimited refills of filter coffee for $5. Great staff and vibe (they have booths!) and they just opened on Friday and Saturday nights so it's now my favourite bar in Melbourne too. Do yourself a favour...
